SANTA YSABEL - Norman Lee Martinez, 53, died Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa.
Born July 4, 1947, on the Mesa Grande Indian Reservation he was a member of the Santa Ysabel Band of Mission Indians.
He had lived in Escondido, Barona and in Mesa Grande for 17 years.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1983, and served in Vietnam for two tours. He had also been a handyman.
Mr. Martinez is survived by his father, Lawrence Martinez; brother Larry Martinez; sisters Margie Lafferty of Mesa Grande, Ione La Chappa of Barona and Joyce Martinez of Mesa Grande; five nieces and nephews; and 12 great-nephews and nieces.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday, June 29, at Bonham Bros & Lee Mortuary Chapel.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 30, at Mission Santa Ysabel. Burial will follow at the Indian Mission Cemetery.

Geraldine Coulson, 88
VISTA - Geraldine Glendora Coulson, 88, died Thursday, June 21, 2001, at Life Care Center.
Born May 9, 1913, in Warsaw, N.Y., she lived in San Diego County for 50 years.
She was a minister at the Lighthouse of the North Ministries in Anchorage, Alaska, and The House of Prayer in San Diego. She was also a homemaker.
Mrs. Coulson was preceded in death by her husband, Jack R. Coulson, on May 25, 1997.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Harold B. and Rae Weeks of Oceanside, Gerald C. and Rose Weeks of Wasilla, Alaska, and Richard L. and Cindy Weeks of Vista; 22 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
A celebration of her life was held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, at the I Do Wedding Chapel.

Gregory Simms, 54
PAUMA VALLEY - Gregory Van Simms, 54, died Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at his home.
Born June 21, 1947, in Torrance, he lived in Pauma Valley for three years.
He was an owner/operator of an import/export business for 10 years. He served in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Simms is survived by his mother, Mary F. Simms of Carlsbad; sons Shad S. Simms of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Wade H. Simms of Newport; and sisters Megan Fink of Carlsbad and Melissa Simms of Rhonert Park.
A funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, July 1, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park in Oceanside. A reception will follow at the familyıs home.

George Hordeman, 85
VISTA - George Hordeman, 85, died Sunday, June 17, 2001.
Born July 23, 1915, in Indiana, he lived in California since 1959.
He had been a farm hand for 40 years and attended St. James Catholic Church in Solana Beach.
Mr. Hordeman is survived by his cousin, Lee Ann Wozniak of Park Ridge, Ill.
A memorial service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Sept. 23, at Church of San Rafael in Rancho Bernardo.
Inurnment will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 29, at Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside.
Oceanside Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Elry Hemken, 94
VISTA - Elry G. Hemken, 94, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at Restful Homes in Vista.

Born July 26, 1905, in Illinois, he lived in Vista for 2 1/2 years. He worked for Dangermond Nursery and was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.

Mr. Hemken was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Hemken, in 1976. He is survived by his son, Larry Hemken of San Bernardino; daughter Carol Ellestad of Vista; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Monday, Feb. 28, at Eternal Hills Chapel, with Nathan Kilian officiating. Burial will take place at a later time at Desert Lawn Cemetery in Calimesa.

The family suggests memorial donations to the Arthritis Foundation, 9089 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., Suite 300, San Diego, CA 92123.

Jeremiah Bliss, 20

RAMONA - Jeremiah John Bliss, 20, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at his home.

Born Jan. 16, 1980, n Loveland, Colo., he lived in Escondido for 12 years before moving to Ramona in 1995.

Mr. Bliss was preceded in death by his twin brother, Walter John Bliss Jr. He is survived by his girlfriend, Susie Silva; father Walter John Bliss of Escondido; mother Vicki Bliss of Ramona; brother Joshua Shane Bliss of Ramona; sister Lindsay Marie Bliss of Ramona; grandparents M. Lee Bliss of Loveland and Doris H. Cruse of Escondido; great-grandmother Florence Gilmore; uncles and aunts Pam and Dean Lindsley of Ramona, Dale Johnson of Escondido, Linda and Dave Mancino of Valley Center and Vicki and Elizabeth Cruse of Escondido; great aunt and uncle Charlie Ann and Tom Stoffel of San Marcos; and 12 cousins including Neal and Ryan Lindsley of Ramona.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 3, at Bonham Bros. & Lee Mortuary in Ramona. A reception for friends and family will follow at North Rural Recovery Center, 323 Hunter St. in Ramona.

Robert Tupper, 78

SUN CITY - Robert I. Tupper, 78, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Ember Care Convalescent Hospital.

Born May 2, 1921, in South Portland, Maine, he lived in Sun City for five years. He was the owner of Tupper Realty in Hebron, Conn., for 12 years and served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1943. He was a member of the Lions Club and the Real Estate Board, both in Connecticut.

Mr. Tupper is survived by his wife, Irene Tupper of Sun City; sons Robert Tupper of Whitefield, Maine, and Andrew Tupper of Hebron, Conn.; daughter Sandra Tupper of Diamond Bar; brother Donald Tupper of Portland, Maine; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at noon Friday, March 3, at Evans Brown Sun City Mortuary. Burial will take place at Riverside National Cemetery.

Bessie Stuber, 90

SUN CITY - Bessie Edith Stuber, 90, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, of cancer at her home.

Born Jan. 20, 1910, in Norwood, Mo., she lived in Sun City for 10 years. She was a self-employed beautician in Wichita, Kan., for 19 years. She won the Women of the Year Award in 1963 in Kansas through the American Business Women's Association and was a member of the Women's Circle at the Sun City United Methodist Church. She was a volunteer at the Children's Hospital in Orange.

Mrs. Stuber is survived by her husband, Lawrence Stuber of Sun City; sons Marion Ethridge of Tucson, Ariz., Robert Ethridge of Wichita and Jeffrey Stuber of Murrieta; daughter Kathy Staley of Menifee; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 3, at Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area 5.

Harry Pedersen, 76
ESCONDIDO - Harry Pedersen, 76, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, in Escondido.

Born Nov. 17, 1923, in Chicago, he lived in Escondido for three years. He was a maintenance supervisor and locksmith for Escondido Union High School District and served in the U.S. Army during World War II, earning a Good Conduct Medal, European Theatre Campaign Medal and a Meritorious Unit Commendation.

Mr. Pedersen is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gloria A. Pedersen of Escondido; sons and daughters-in-law Mark T. and Sue Pedersen and John G. Pedersen, all of Escondido, and Terry A. and JoEllen Pedersen of Spicewood, Texas; sister Lorraine Carlson of Phoenix; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held and a rosary recited Thursday, March 2, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary. A Mass will be celebrated at 7 a.m. today, March 3, at the Church of the Resurrection. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Grace Weymer, 84

SAN MARCOS - Grace L. Weymer, 84, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Palomar Medical Center.

Born April 10, 1915, in Iowa, she lived in San Marcos for 18 years. She was a licensed vocational nurse for the Veterans Administration for 26 years.

Mrs. Weymer was preceded in death by her daughter, Betty D. Fountain. She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Frank Weymer of San Marcos; son Ronald Barton of Palmdale; daughter Heather Quigley of Woodridge, Va.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held Thursday, March 2, at Poway-Bernardo Mortuary. A graveside service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, March 3, at Dearborn Memorial Park in Poway. Interment icon will follow.

The family suggests memorial donations to Elizabeth Hospice, 150 W. Crest St., Escondido, CA 92025.

May Summers, 85

VISTA - May Summers, 85, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at Rancho Vista Health Care Center.

Born May 1, 1914, in Texas, she lived in Vista for 15 years. She was a homemaker and a member of Buena Vista Baptist Church in Vista and the First Christian Church in Wood River, Ill.

Mrs. Summers is survived by her husband of 63 years, Charles Summers of Vista; daughter Charlene Itchkawich of Vista; and brother Fred Isaminger of Tuscola, Ill.

Inurnment will take place at a later date at Prices Branch Memorial Cemetery in Price Branch, Mo.

The family suggests memorial donations to the Buena Vista Baptist Church, 145 Hannalei Drive, Vista, CA 92084.

Lillie Bolig, 62

ESCONDIDO - Lillie Bolig, 62, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000.

Born May 15, 1937, in San Antonio, Texas, she lived in Escondido for 26 years. She worked for La Tapatia

Mrs. Bolig was preceded in death by her brother, Rudy Perez. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Philip Kenneth Bolig of Escondido; son Rory Kenneth Bolig of Escondido; daughters Irma Boston and Christine Gonzales, both of Escondido, and April Marinelli of Oceanside; brother William Perez of Houston; sisters Hortence Castillo of Escondido and Irene Ortiz of El Cajon; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary.

Maxine Ratko, 76

BONSALL - Maxine Ratko, 76, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, in Fallbrook.

Born Dec. 2, 1923, in Kansas, she lived in Bonsall for 28 years. She was the assistant city clerk for the city of Vista for six years.

Mrs. Ratko is survived by her sons, Robert Ratko of Sunnyvale, Larry Ratko of Tacoma, Wash., and Ron Ratko of Prunedale; daughter Tris Neuzil of Prunedale; sister Shirley Eckart of St. Louis; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

No service will be held at the request of the deceased. A private cremation is planned.

Albert Bassler, 78

FALLBROOK - Albert Bassler, 78, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, in Fallbrook.

Born Jan. 26, 1922, in Parawan County, Utah, he lived in Fallbrook for four years. He was the operator/owner of a body shop for 47 years.

Mr. Bassler is survived by his wife of 57 years, Margie Bassler of Fallbrook; son Scott Bassler of Fallbrook; daughters Linda Howze of Bakersfield, Bonnie Pembleton of Murrieta and Barbara Hlovac of Sandy, Utah; brother Harry Bassler of Tehachapi; sisters Carmen Forney of Lebanon, Pa., Roberta Rock of Arcadia and Betty Lou Campbell of Grants Pass, Ore.; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation and viewing will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at Berry-Bell & Hall Chapel. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m., with Bishop Welcome Adamson of the 1st Ward, Fallbrook LDS Church officiating. Interment icon will take place at Fallbrook Masonic Cemetery.

Louis Yard, 91

ESCONDIDO - Louis D. Yard, 91, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, of kidney failure at Tri-City Medical Center.

Born March 19, 1908, in Clifton, Colo., he lived in Escondido for more than 30 years. He worked for GTE for 32 years before retiring in 1971. He served as a communications officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps in North Africa, Sicily and Italy during World War II, retiring as a colonel in the Air Force after 30 years.

Mr. Yard is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Dexter and Cherie Yard of Vista; grandchildren Derek Yard and Deanna Yard.

A private cremation is planned with cremains to be scattered at sea.

Mary Brayton, 74

HEMET - Mary Grice Brayton, 74, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, of cancer, in Hemet.

Born Feb. 4, 1926, in Hungary, she lived in Hemet for four years. She was a china painter before retiring.

Mrs. Brayton is survived by her husband of two years, Whitney Brayton of Hemet; son Geoffrey Grice of Jackson, Tenn.; daughters Heather Mueller of Fullerton and Kathryn Grice-Wright of Hemet; brother Alex Kepics of San Marcos; sister Ethel Dann of Escondido; grandchildren Deborah Mueller, David Mueller, Baileay Bartlett, Rose Bartlett-Johnson, Kathy Bartlett, Jessica Grice, Angela Grice, Heather Grice and Geoffrey Grice Jr.; and great-grandchild Garrett Johnson.

A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, March 4, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Hemet, with Lester Dugan officiating. A private cremation is planned with cremains to be scattered.

Donna Jenkins, 57

ESCONDIDO - Donna Jenkins, 57, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at her home.

Born April 26, 1942, in Belle Fourhe, S.D., she lived in Escondido for five years. She was the owner of Blue Haven Pools.

Mrs. Jenkins was preceded in death by her husband, Walter T. Jenkins. She is survived by her sons, Dennis Baldwin of Vista and Derek Baldwin of Temecula; daughters Debra Jenkins Porter of La Mesa and Carol Felan of Sugarland, Texas; sisters Renette Mills of Alpine and Eunice Dackermann of Julian; grandchildren Stacy Hoehmann, Rayana Rogers, Luke Porter, Dennis Baldwin, Marcia Felan, Justin Felan and Katy Felan; and great-grandchildren Morgan Hoehmann, Monique Hoehmann, Brook Baldwin and Mariah Martinez.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 4, at 2205 Johnston Road in Escondido, with Herb Dackermann officiating.

David Dillon, 76

LAKE SAN MARCOS - David E. Dillon Jr., 76, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, in Escondido.

Born March 8, 1924, in Los Angeles, he lived in San Marcos for 13 years. He worked for Western Gear Corporation before retiring and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a leader for Boy Scouts of America.

Mr. Dillon is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ida Dillon of Lake San Marcos; sons Bruce Dillon of Encinitas and Richard Dillon of La Verne; and grandchildren Lauren, Thomas and Nicole.

A graveside service will be held at Rose Hills Memorial Park, with the Rev. Paul Nelson officiating. Interment icon will follow.
