John Sabelis, 74

OCEANSIDE - John Carroll Sabelis, 74, died Thursday, March 23, 2000, at his home.

Born Nov. 7, 1925, in Chicago, he lived in Oceanside for 50 years. He worked for San Diego Gas & Electric before retiring.

Mr. Sabelis is survived by his wife of 49 years, Virginia Sabelis of Oceanside; son and daughter-in-law Mark and Eva Sabelis of Oceanside; daughters and sons-in-law Rebecca and David Gordon of Vista and Jewel and Michael Biddle of San Clemente; and grandchildren Michael, Beth Ann and John Kucharski, Matthew Biddle, Cecia, Marc and Daniel Sabelis and Scott Gordon.

A memorial service will be held at noon Monday, April 3, at North Coast United Methodist Church in Oceanside, with Richard Smith officiating. A private cremation is planned.

The family suggests memorial donations to Hospice of the North Coast, 5421 Avenida Encinas, Carlsbad, CA 92008.

Tammy Udell, 35

ESCONDIDO - Tammy Lee Udell, 35, died Saturday, March 25, 2000, at Pomerado Hospital.

Born Sept. 14, 1964, in Santa Monica, she lived in Escondido for 11 years. She was a homemaker and a member of Vineyard Christian Fellowship.

Mrs. Udell is survived by her husband of 16 years, Tony Udell of Escondido; mother Linda Fabianowicz of Poway; father Albert Fabianowicz of Illinois; son Jacob Udell of Escondido; daughters Nichole Udell and Jamie Udell, both of Escondido; and brothers Thomas Fabianowicz, Tim Fabianowicz and Ted Fabianowicz, all of Poway.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 1, at Dearborn Memorial Park, with Ron Ford officiating.

Walter Stanley, 80

OCEANSIDE - Walter A. Stanley, 80, died Sunday, March 26, 2000, at Tri-City Medical Center.

Born May 10, 1919, in Wyoming, he lived in Oceanside for 19 years. He was a real estate broker for Fredericks Development before retiring.

Mr. Stanley is survived by his wife of 51 years, Virginia Stanley of Oceanside.

No service will be held at the request of the deceased. A private cremation is planned with cremains to be scattered at sea.

Georgia Rosenberger, 84

OCEANSIDE - Georgia K. Rosenberger, 84, died Sunday, March 26, 2000, in Oceanside.

Born Aug. 24, 1915, in Chicago, she lived in Oceanside for 25 years.

Mrs. Rosenberger was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Rosenberger, in 1987. She is survived by her sister, Roberta Hogan of Illinois; and several nephews and nieces.

A memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, April 7, at Eternal Hills Mortuary, with the Rev. Charles Wright officiating. Inurnment will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Betty Spate, 77

VISTA - Betty Jane Spate, 77, died Friday, March 24, 2000, at Tri-City Medical Center.

Born July 29, 1922, in Murray, Iowa, she lived in Vista for 11 years. She was an accountant for Gary Hills Jewelers.

Mrs. Spate is survived by one son in La Costa; stepdaughter Linda Ray of Fresno; and two grandchildren.

Joel Brownell, 67

CARLSBAD - Joel Keith Brownell, 67, died Monday, March 27, 2000, at his home.

Born Aug. 31, 1932, in Long Beach, he lived in Carlsbad for 27 years. He was a sales manager for McMahan Desk, retiring in 1994.

Mr. Brownell was preceded in death by his father, Robert K. Brownell, in 1975. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Julie A. Brownell of Carlsbad; mother Betty Brownell of Palm Desert; son Jay M. Brownell of Carlsbad; daughters Jan M. Brownell and Julie L. Brownell, both of Carlsbad; brothers and sister-in-law Darrel Brownell of Newport Beach and Robert and Judy Brownell of Palm Desert; granddaughter Juliana Brownell Collins; and several nephews and nieces.

A private burial will be held Saturday, April 1, at Desert Memorial Park in Cathedral City. Call the family for the time.

Elizabeth Kurianski, 93

ROMOLAND - Elizabeth Kurianski, 93, died Thursday, March 23, 2000.

Born March 13, 1907, in Hungary, she lived in Romoland for 43 years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Baha'i' faith and a founding member of the first Local Spiritual Assembly of Three Lakes.

Mrs. Kurianski is survived by her sons, Carlos Kurianski of Romoland and Stanley Kurianski of New York City; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held Tuesday, March 28, at Miller-Jones Mortuary & Crematory in Sun City. A funeral service followed. Burial took place at Perris Valley Cemetery.

Raymond Ochoa, 54

SUN CITY - Raymond Manuel "Ray" Ochoa, 54, died Monday, March 27, 2000, of cancer, at City of Hope in Duarte.

Born Dec. 25, 1945, in Antioch, he lived in Sun City for five years. He was an administrator for the U.S. Air Force and had served in the U.S. Air Force from 1965 to 1986. He was awarded Airman of the Year in 1978 at Georgia Air Force base and was sports director at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii.

Mr. Ochoa is survived by his wife, Rufina Ochoa of Las Vegas; mother Rose Ochoa of Sun City; son Raymond Ochoa of Las Vegas; daughters Rose Davis and Raquel Ochoa, both of Las Vegas; brother Gary Ochoa of St. Louis; and four grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary recited at 7 p.m., today, March 29, at Miller-Jones Mortuary & Crematory in Sun City. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 30, at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael O'Day officiating. Burial will take place at Riverside National Cemetery.

The family suggests memorial donations to City of Hope National Medical Center, 1500 E. Duarte Road, Duarte, CA 91010.

Mildred Rumin, 91

ESCONDIDO - Mildred Hailey Rumin, 91, died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at Palomar Medical Center.

Born July 27, 1908, in Randolph, Neb., she lived in Escondido for 22 years. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Eastern Star since she was 18 years old and was a Past Worthy Matron in Lakewood, Colo. She was Past Mother Advisor of the Columbine Assembly of Rainbow Girls in Lakewood.

Mrs. Rumin is survived by her husband of 64 years, Carl Werner Rumin of Escondido; sons James M. Rumin of Arizona and David Rumin of Colorado; daughter Linda Diane Chapman of Colorado; sister Madeleine Green of Colorado; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

No service will be held. A private cremation is planned.

William Allen, 80

OCEANSIDE - William W. "Bill" Allen, 80, died Saturday, March 18, 2000, of complications from cancer, in Oceanside.

Born June 9, 1919, in Phoenix, he lived in Oceanside for 23 years. He worked in moving and storage for Bekins, Chambers Mayflower and Lightning/Allied Van Lines in the Phoenix area and Lyons Van Lines, retiring in 1981. He was a member of Teamsters Local 104 and a 1937 graduate of Phoenix Union High School. He was elected a lifetime member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elk, Lodge No. 335 in Phoenix and helped to develop the senior citizens softball league in Southern California.

Mr. Allen was preceded in death by his sons, Larry Allen and Ronald Allen; and grandson Shawn. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Allen; sons Donald Allen and Brian Allen; daughters Linda Allen, Cindy Allen and Susan Allen; grandchildren Misty, Casey, Adam, Katie, Renesha, Bethany, Hannah, Matthew, Rachel and Daniel; and great-grandchild Micaela.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today, March 29, at Rancho Calevero Clubhouse, 3570 Calevero in Oceanside, with the Rev. Andre Brackens of New Venture Christian Fellowship officiating. A private cremation is planned with inurnment to take place at Live Oak Cemetery in Monrovia.

Robert Wright, 76

VISTA - Robert Keith Wright, 76, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, of aspiration pneumonia, at Tri-City Medical Center.

Born July 17, 1923, in Tompkins Township, Warren County, Ill., he lived n Vista for 45 years. He retired from Prudential Insurance Co. on June 1, 1976. He served as pump station operator with the 784th Army Engineers in Africa and Cologne, France, during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, and with the U.S. Army from Jan. 7, 1943, until Dec. 2, 1945. He worked for San Diego Gas & Electric and established the Wright Brothers general contracting business.

He was a member of the Oceanside Seventh-day Adventist Church, serving as first elder, coordinator of the Shepherding program, teacher of a Sabbath School class, and helping with the building program.

Mr. Wright is survived by his wife of 56 years, Rose Ann Wright of Vista; sons and daughters-in-law Robert K. Jr. and Jane Wright of Lampasas, Texas, and Richard Lee and Sandee Wright of Candler, N.C.; daughter and son-in-law Patricia Ann and Ralph Rakis of Vista; brother and sister-in-law Homer and Melva Wright of Priest River, Idaho; and grandchildren Aimee Noelle Wright Patterson and husband Travis Patterson, Stacee Lynne Wright and Carol Joanna Wright.

A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 9, at the Oceanside Seventh-day Adventist Church, with the Rev. Eddie Dopp and Euel Atchley officiating. Inurnment took place at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

Martin 'Bob' L. Keeler, 87
Martin "Bob" L. Keeler, a resident of Escondido for 56 years, passed away in Espanola, New Mexico, Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001. He was born on Jan. 10, 1914, in Coyville, Kan. On Jan. 7, 1936, he marriage Sarah Margaret Tarter.
Martin marriage Viola Vincent on June 7, 1978. Martin Keeler worked for Hollandia Diary in San Marcos for more than 30 years.
Mr. Keeler was preceded in death by his wife Sarah Margaret Keeler in Sept. 1985; parents, Charles and Ethel Keeler; son Curt Keeler; brother Norris Keeler and sisters Mary Alice, Glenna, Josephine and June. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Viola Keeler of Espanola, N.M.; son Wayne and wife Angie Keeler of Mesa, Ariz.; Iva Blake and husband Dan of Escondido; son Bobby Joe and wife Teddy Keeler of Covina; son Larry Keeler ; sisters Georgia Reno and husband Gene of Fredonia, Kan.; Una Steed of Auburn, Wash.; Alta Mae Runyan of Winfield, Kan.; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; many nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. Martin "Bob" enjoyed farming, playing cards, serving coffee and spending time with his family and friends.
A memorial service was held on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at 10 a.m. in the Sangre De Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home in Espanola, N.M. The pallbearers were Aaron Blake, Brian Blake, Richard Keeler, Bobby Garcia, Andrew Oritz and Charles Keeler. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Treva Blake, Samantha Keeler, WM. Gibson and Joe Rodriguez.

Joseph Tolentino, 59
OCEANSIDE - Joseph Tolentino, 59, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego.
Born June 12, 1941, in Makawao, Maui, Hawaii, he lived in Oceanside for a year and a half and previously lived in Vista for 23 years. After retiring from the U.S. Marine Corps as a first sergeant, he was a security guard for Southern California Edison for 12 years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He enjoyed fishing and golf.
Mr. Tolentino is survived by his wife of 29 years, Nancy L. Tolentino of Oceanside; stepson David Hedge of Fallbrook; daughter Julie Davis of Oceanside; brothers William Tolentino of Danville, Dwight Tolentino of Hawaii, Louie and Leonard Domingo, both of Hawaii; sisters Yolanda Isley of Culver City, Rose Respicio, Charlet Samante, Erline Hutchison, all of Hawaii and Dolores Dencel and Yolanda Isley, both of Seattle, Wash.; and grandson Joshua Davis of Oceanside.
Visitation is scheduled from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and funeral Mass celebrated at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Garrett Galvin officiating, Friday, March 2, at Old Church at Mission San Luis Rey. A private cremation will follow.

OCEANSIDE - Manuel Villarosa Villaroman Sr., 95, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at urgent care.
Born June 28, 1906, in the Philippines, he lived in Oceanside. He was a retired landowner.
Mr. Villaroman was preceded in death by his first wife, Carlota Rivera Villaroman. He is survived by his wife, Fe Villaroman of Oceanside; sons and daughters-in-law Manuel and Mieko Villaroman of Oceanside, Danilo R. and Teodora Villaroman, Ruben R. and Maryanne Villaroman and Celsom Villaroman, all of the Philippines, Ariel M. and Marissa Villaroman of Oceanside, Manny Villaroman of Oceanside and Michael Villaroman of Fayetteville, N.C.; brother and sister-in-law Jose and Fe Villaroman of the Philippines; sisters and brother-in-law Lolita Villaroman of Cerritos and Angelita and Julian Valte of the Philippines; 20 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

CARLSBAD - Jaye Angelos, 53, died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at her home.
Born Nov. 24, 1947, in Glendale, she lived in Carlsbad. She worked as a sales representative for North American Van Lines. She had worked as a florist in Carlsbad. She was a devoted gardener and artist.
Mrs. Angelos is survived by her husband of 26 years, Peter Angelos of Carlsbad; mother Vangie Hooker of Sonora; stepfather Fred Hooker of Sonora; sons and daughter-in-law Justin and Rebecca Angelos of Long Beach and Mark and Becky Kalinchak of Huntington Beach; sister and brother-in-law Cynde and Steve Lee of Sonora; nephew Matthew Lee; niece Alyson Lee Macon; and grandchildren Keadra and Masan Kalinchak.

Born Dec. 11, 1927, in Cheyenne, Wyo., she lived in Oceanside one month and previously in Rancho Bernardo for nine years. She was a secretary.
Mrs. Welch was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Cooper F. Welch Jr., Dec. 31, 2000. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law Tim and Audrey Welch of Carlsbad; daughter and son-in-law Stacy and Russell Bowman of Arlington, Texas; brother John Steinke of Salinas; and five grandchildren.
A funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, March 2, at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Poway with the Rev. Mary White officiating. Interment icon will follow at Dearborn Memorial Park in Poway.

RANCHO BERNARDO - Suzanne W. Middleton, 75, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, of injuries sustained in an auto accident on Feb. 5, 2001.
Born May 5, 1925, in Toledo, Ohio, she lived in Rancho Bernardo for 17 years. She retired in 1963 from IBM Corp. as a librarian in the research library. She attended the University of Toledo, the University of Denver, the Sorbonne in Paris, France and graduated from University of California, Berkeley with a bachelor's degree. She received her master of arts in library science degree from the University of Michigan. She also was a librarian at Toledo Public Library, Grosse point Public Library in Michigan and Monterey Peninsula College. She served one year in the Merchant Marines.
Mrs. Middleton was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Middleton on Feb. 5, 2001. She is survived by her son Brad Middleton of Rancho Bernardo; daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Jeffrey Cribb of Temecula; brothers Frank Souder of Belmont and William Souder of Toledo, Ohio; and grandchildren Jordan and Jacob Cribb.
Private family services are planned. Inurnment will be at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside.

MURRIETA - James McGregor Blakey, 71, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at his home.
Born April 20, 1929, in New Castle, England, he lived in Murrieta for 25 years. He worked for 50 years as a truck driver for Ted Cheek Trucking. He enjoyed camping, ham radio and the beach.
Mr. James is survived by his wife, Alice Blakey of Murrieta; sons Jimmy Blakey of Murrieta and James Blakey of Tennessee; daughter Florence Unger of Lake Elsinore; sister Anne Termine of Escondido; and grandchildren Jaclyn, Christopher, Jacob, and Christina Unger.
Visitation is scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, March 2, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Burial will follow at Laurel Cemetery.

CARLSBAD - Hazel Brewer Horwitz, 80, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001.
Born Sept. 29, 1920, in Bowdoin, Mont., she lived in Carlsbad for 16 years. She was an associate professor of mathematics at Pasadena Community College and retired in 1983. She completed the Master Gardener Training Program from the U.S. Deptartment of Agriculture and University of Southern California. She enjoyed foreign travel, reading and gardening.
Mrs. Horwitz was preceded in death by her sister, Florence Roberta Parker in 1996. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, David Albert Horwitz of Carlsbad; stepdaughter Jody Lynn Burroughs of Las Vegas; brothers Harold Raymon Brewer of Ramona, Charley Otter Brewer of Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada, William James Brewer of Zurich, Mont., Daniel Robert Brewer of Los Gatos, George Norman Brewer, Kenneth Roy Brewer, and Kenneth Roy Brewer of Stoughton, all of Saskatchewan, Canada and Earl Loran Brewer of Sonora; sister Merle Ruth Leister of Constantine, Mich.; grandchildren Desiree Burroughs of Las Vegas; and many nieces and nephews.

Ms. Knighten is survived by her son Simmon Ndung'u of Tennessee; daughters and sons-in-law Kandie and Michael Mitchell of San Diego County and Debra and Eddie Cox of Florida; cousin Dorothy Bradley of Long Beach; grandchildren Jatyon Basille of New York, Maunu Williams of Texas and Jahkiya Cox of Florida; great-grandchildren Marquel Basille of New York, Tavaris Wilkins of North Carolina and Christian Basille of New York; and numerous nieces and nephews.
