ENCINITAS - Leroy Richard "Dick" Atkins, 76, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000.
Born March 28, 1923, in Pittsburgh, he lived in Encinitas for 56 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired as a mechanical engineer from Convair Aircraft Corp.
Mr. Atkins is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Lisette and Harold Dobbins of Solana Beach; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 27, at Encinitas Mortuary. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at Encinitas Mortuary. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in San Diego.
Mabel Fowler, 79
ESCONDIDO - Mabel Ellen Fowler, 79, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, in Escondido.
Born May 27, 1920, in Springfield, Mo., she lived in Escondido for 50 years.
She was a self-employed accountant for 25 years before retiring, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the ALTRUSA Club and the American Society of Women Accountants.
Mrs. Fowler is survived by her son and daughters-in-law, Rusty and Renee Fowler of Escondido; daughters Sharon L. Fowler and Lenna P. Nunn, both of Escondido; brothers Don Gray of Tustin, Gary Gray of Glendora and Dwayne Gray of Cathedral City; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at McLeod Mortuary, with Bishop Kirk Betts officiating. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
The family suggests memorial donations to a charity of choice.
Hedvig Timm, 82
ESCONDIDO - Hedvig T. Timm, 82, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, in Escondido.
Born June 6, 1917, in Lancaster, Minn., she lived in Escondido for 45 years.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Timm was preceded in death by her husband, Warren A. Timm, in 1983.
She is survived by her son, Rusty Timm of Anderson; brother Vernet Steen of Minneapolis, Minn.; sister Gertrude Prosser of Minnesota; and three grandchildren.
A private service was held.

William Burke, 82
OCEANSIDE - William Aaron Burke, 82, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, in Oceanside.
Born Sept. 16, 1917, in Sugar Creek, Mo., he lived in Oceanside for 11 years. He worked for Rockwell International before retiring and served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945.
Mr. Burke was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda D. Burke, in 1988. He is survived by his sons, Michael W. Burke of San Marcos and Timothy J. Burke of Oceanside; daughters Patrice S. Rutter of Roseburg, Ore., and Deliece B. Moya of San Pedro; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, at the home of Mike Burke, with the family officiating. His cremains will be scattered at sea.

Peter Miskovich, 82
VISTA - Peter Miskovich, 82, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, of pneumonia, at Rancho Vista Health Care Center in Vista.
Born March 24, 1917, in Scranton, Pa., he lived in Vista for three years.
He served in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a master sergeant after almost 30 years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mr. Miskovich was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Lois Miskovich, on Nov. 18, 1996. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Leslie and Richard Mette of Vista and Lois and Peter Tschaepe of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and grandchildren Adrienne, James and Jonathan Mette, Mark and Megan Tschaepe.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at Saint Anne's Episcopal Church in Oceanside, with the Rev. Quintin Marrow officiating. Inurnment will follow at 1 p.m. at All Saints Cemetery in Oceanside.

CARLSBAD - Bernard "Bernie" Richardson, 43, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, of cancer, at his home in Carlsbad.
Born April 24, 1956, in Bay City, Mich., he lived in Carlsbad for 11 years.
He was a test technician specialist.
Mr. Richardson is survived by his wife of two years, Rhonda Richardson of Carlsbad; mother Eleanor Ward of Suttons Bay, Mich.; son Corey Richardson of Michigan; brother John Richardson of Traverse City, Mich.; and sisters Ann Gregory of Suttons Bay, Mich., Fleur Bedford of Rascommon, Mich., Ruth Schiattone of Lake Leelanau, Mich. and Jill Elzey of St. Joseph, Mich.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary Chapel. A private cremation is planned.
Kenneth Bailey, 87
IRVINE - Kenneth P. Bailey, 87, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at his home in Irvine.
Born Feb. 17, 1912, in Benton Harbor, Mich., he lived in Irvine and had lived in Oceanside for eight years.
He was the superintendent of Oceanside High School and Junior College, director of Oceanside/Carlsbad College from 1948 to 1950 and chairman of the social science department of Oceanside/Carlsbad College from 1939 to 1944. He was principal of Pacific High School in San Bernardino and director of teacher education at UC Irvine.
He received a commendation from the California State Assembly for his dedication and contributions to California education.
He earned the first doctoral degree conferred by UCLA in 1938 for work in colonial American history and was acting dean of students at Humboldt State.
He served on the California State Curriculum Commission from 1954 to 1969, was a member of Kiwanis and a volunteer for the United Way, and was the author of many books on history and education.
Mr. Bailey is survived by his son, Kenneth Joseph Bailey; daughter Darlene Bailey; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren Kenneth James, Hailey, Michael and Erin.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at Pacific View Memorial Park in Newport Beach. A reception will follow at the Marriott in Newport Beach.
Mary Spector, 89
LAKE SAN MARCOS - Mary Stephanie Spector, 89, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at Tri-City Medical Center.
Born Feb. 2, 1910, in Chicago, Ill., she lived at Lake San Marcos for 28 years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Spector was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome M. Spector, on May 8, 1986. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Barbara Spector of Escondido; daughter and son-in-law Carol J. and John Vitulli of Vista; sisters Stephanie Sullivan and Sophia Wasilewski, both of Chicago; and grandchildren Joseph M. Vitulli and Annjanette Vitulli.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at Oak Hill Cemetery. Interment
will follow.

Harold Rogers, 60
OCEANSIDE - Harold E. Rogers, 60, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at Kaiser-Zion Hospital, of respiratory failure.
Born June 18, 1939, in Grass Valley, he lived in Oceanside for 11 years and in San Diego County for 59 years.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1957 to 1976.
He was a member of the Marine Corps Historical Society and the curator of the Command Museum at MCRD from 1973 until retiring from civil service in 1997.
Mr. Rogers is survived by his wife of 34 years, Jeannette Rogers; and sons Frederick Rogers and William Rogers.
A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, Jan. 29, at the Ranch House Chapel on Camp Pendleton.
James Downing, 32
OCEANSIDE - James Downing, 32, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000.
Born May 20, 1967, in California, he lived in Oceanside for 32 years. He worked for K-Mart.
Mr. Downing is survived by his mother and father, Maria and Delford Downing of Oceanside; brothers Clifford Downing of Las Vegas and Raymond Downing of Oceanside; grandparent Aleja Fonseca of Puerto Rico; and several uncles, aunts and cousins.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at noon Saturday, Jan. 29, at Mission San Luis Rey. A private cremation is planned.
Barbara Parker, 56
MURRIETA - Barbara Dianne Parker, 56, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, of a heart attack at Inland Valley Regional Medical Center in Wildomar.
Born Dec. 19, 1943, in Superior, Wis., she lived in Murrieta for two years and had lived in Hemet for 14 years. She was a quality engineering technician for Advanced Cardiovascular Systems for 14 years in Temecula and a member of St. Martha's Catholic Church of Murrieta.
Mrs. Parker is survived by her sons, Daniel Dayon of Murrieta and Dennis Trunell of San Marcos; daughters Debra Parker of Murrieta and Alicia Thomson of Hemet; sister Genevieve Ahlgren of Reno, Nev.; and 11 grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at Miller-Jones Mortuary Chapel. A funeral service will take place at noon Saturday, Jan. 29, at St. Martha's Catholic Church. Burial will take place at Riverside National Cemetery.

Born July 15, 1910, in Ottumwa, Iowa, she lived in Murrieta for four years. She was a homemaker for 60 years.
Mrs. Miller is survived by her daughter, Charleen Jones of Murrieta.

VISTA - Christopher "Bubba" Dewey, 27, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, from complications of diabetes, at his home.
Born Aug. 2, 1972, in Waukegan, Ill., he lived in Vista for 25 years.
Mr. Dewey is survived by his mother and her friend, Wendy Maynard and Randy Knuckles of Vista and father and stepmother Wayne and Donna Dewey of Carlsbad; sister and brother-in-law Elyssa Dewey and Jessee Nussbaum of Escondido; grandparents Bill and Trish Dewey of Fallbrook and Shirley Maynard of Walworth, Wis.; and nephew and niece Jason Cameron Nussbaum and Sierra Dawn Nussbaum.
A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, Jan. 29, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Carlsbad, with the Rev. Steve McCall officiating. His cremains will be scattered at sea from the New Tortuga in San Diego at a date to be decided.

Walter Brunner, 83
FALLBROOK - Walter "Brock" Denning Brunner, 83, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, in Vista.
Born Feb. 7, 1916, in Rayland, Ohio, he lived in Fallbrook for eight years. He was a pipefitter and steamfitter for Local Union 83 for 55 years in Wheeling, W.Va., and a member of the Eagles and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mr. Brunner is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Brunner of Vista; daughter and son-in-law Joye and Michael Socha of Fallbrook; grandchildren Amy Socha of Fallbrook and Shawn Socha of Oceanside; and great-grandchild Jessica Socha of Oceanside.
A private family service was held. Interment
took place at Holly Memorial Garden in Colerain, Ohio.

Lois Zimmermann, 73
RANCHO BERNARDO - Lois Zimmermann, 73, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000.
Born Sept. 21, 1926, in Detroit, she lived in Rancho Bernardo. She graduated from the Liggett School and attended Denison University. She graduated cum laude from Wayne State University and taught French and Spanish at the Liggett School. She was an artist specializing in portraiture and winning awards for her watercolors and pastels. She was a member of the Rancho Bernardo Art club, the Poway Art League, the San Diego Portrait Society and the San Diego Zoological Society. She published 11 children's stories and completed a novel.
Mrs. Zimmermann was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Roller Zimmermann. She is survived by her son, Bill Zimmermann of San Diego; and daughters Roberta Jones and Andrea Zimmermann, both of Newtown, Conn.
