Robert Johnson Jr., 42
LAS VEGAS - Robert Clay Johnson Jr., 42, died Nov. 10, 2000, at his home.
Born May 28, 1958, in Torrance, he lived in Las Vegas for five years and Murrieta for 12 years. He worked for 20 years as a multi tradesman for Centigrade Inc, and enjoyed restoring cars, fishing and softball.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Ryan Cole of Murrieta; daughter Lisa Marie Johnson of Murrieta; Christopher Johnson of Murrieta; parents Robert and Linda Johnson Sr., of Vista; mother Beverly Johnson of Las Vegas; sisters Julie Acevedo of Vista, Donna Harrison, Patricia Brooks and Elizabeth Campbell, all of Las Vegas; brother and sister-in-law Donald and Jana Johnson of Murrieta; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, March 17, at Valley Funeral Home. Burial will be at Laurel Cemetery in Murrieta.
Valley Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Cora Colbert, 82
ESCONDIDO - Cora M. Colbert, 82, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, in Poway.
Born May 29, 1918, in Chetek, Wis., she lived in Escondido for 24 years. She was a nurse at City of Hope and retired in 1976.
Ms. Colbert is survived by her sister, Margaret Solum of Eau Claire, Wis.
Viewing is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 18, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. Monday, March 19, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary with Larry Smit and Karen Tenniswood officiating. Interment icon will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park with Smit and Tenniswood officiating.

Ronald Osinski, 67
CARLSBAD - Ronald Paul Osinski, 67, died Monday, March 5, 2001, at his home.
Born Nov. 13, 1932, in Toledo, Ohio, he lived in Carlsbad for 24 years. He retired in August 1971, from the U.S. Marine Corps as a master gunnery sergeant.
Mr. Osinski is survived by his wife of 48 years, Barbara Osinski; daughter Victoriana Griffith; grandchildren Christopher and Loel Griffith; and great-grandchildren Travis and Ashley Griffith, all of Susanville.
A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 13, at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

Rose Smith, 76
TEMECULA - Rose Lombard Smith, 76, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare in Murrieta.
Born June 10, 1924, in Oakpark, Ill., she lived in Temecula for 13 years. She was a textile consultant for Craftex Mills in Los Angeles for 48 years.
Ms. Smith is survived by sister Betty Wood of Temecula; and nieces Camille Lombardo of Pasadena, Debbie Lombardo of San Francisco and Dama Resnick of Hidden Hills.
No services will be held at the request of the deceased.
Miller-Jones Mortuary Inc. is handling arrangements.

Margaret Burchett, 80
FALLBROOK - Margaret Irene Burchett, 80, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Palomar Hospital in Escondido.
Born May 2, 1920, in Iowa, she lived in Fallbrook for 60 years. She worked for Fallbrook High School for 20 years.
Mrs. Burchett is survived by her husband of 61 years, Harold E. Burchett of Fallbrook; sons and daughter-in-law Gary L. and Dawn Burchett of Fallbrook and Gene Burchett of Temecula; brothers Bob Chipp and Verlin Chipp, both of Iowa; sisters-in-law Mildred Alderson of Modesto and Clarabelle Chipp of Fallbrook; sister Verda Crawford of Iowa; grandchildren Greg Burchett, Tashia Cowen, Timeree Kristell, Alisha Fleming and Craig Burchett; and great-grandchildren Kenton and Kailee Kristell, Savanah and Hunter Fleming, Gavin and Seth Burchett and Brenna Cowen.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, March 18, at Presbyterian Church of Fallbrook with the Rev. George Hreha officiating.

Ricarda 'Rickie' De Maria
Ricarda "Rickie" De Maria was lifted up to eternal life in Heaven on Tuesday, March 13, 2001, after a nine year battle with cancer. Rickie died in her home surrounded by her husband and loving children. She was 46 years old.
Born Nov. 5, 1954, in Salinas, Rickie shortly thereafter moved with her family to San Diego where she attended school, graduating from Hoover High in 1972. She attended San Diego City College earning a degree and license in Cosmetology.
Rickie moved to Vista shortly after and in 1977 began working at JE Boutique where she built a large clientele.
Rickie had a special gift and love of working with the elderly. She stayed at JE Boutique for 15 years until her diagnosis of cancer.
Rickie loved to attend her children's sporting events and activities. She served as team mom for various groups and also had been a Girl Scout leader.
She had a love for travel and camping in the family trailer. Her favorite camping destination was Rancho Oso in the mountains east of Santa Barbara. In October, Rickie was able to take her last trip, traveling with her husband to see the fall colors in Vermont, New Hampshire and Cape Cod, Mass.
Rickie had a strong Christian faith and values that she shared with her family and friends. She was a nine-year member of Bible Study Fellowship and hosted the Little Rock Scripture Study at her home.
She was a parishioner at Saint Francis Church in Vista and participated in their cancer support group. On Feb. 16, Rickie and her husband renewed their marriage vows at Saint Francis Church in celebration of their 14 years of marriage.
Rickie was preceded in death by her father, Rodney Thomas, and brothers Leonard Campillo and Donald Charles.
She is survived by her husband Joseph, daughters Leandra Nunez-Lopez, Michelle Amador, Christina De Maria and Stephanie De Maria, all of Vista; mother Barbara Thomas of Temecula, sisters Linda Pope of Las Vegas, Donna Nightingale of Temecula and Robin Uribe of San Diego; and three grandchildren, Alexis Amador, Sofia Amador, and Shawn Nunez, all of Vista.
The family would like to offer their sincerest appreciation to the Wellness Community in San Diego, North Coast Hospice, and especially to Dr. Daniel Vicario of Vista for his tremendous support and care over the years.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, at St. Francis Church in Vista with the Rev. Patrick Mulcahy officiating.
Remains will be placed immediately following at the San Luis Rey Mission Cemetery.
A reception will follow immediately after the service at the San Luis Rey Mission Sacred Courtyard.

Curtis Hughes, 70
"... And when yourself with shining foot shall pass among the guests like stars gathered onto grass and when on your joyous errand reach the spot where I made one - turn down an empty glass." Omar Khayyam.
Everyone who knew Curt will remember his passion for history and his ability to entertain his many friends with recollections of his adventures in military service and on the Oceanside Police Department.
His many friends and family members will miss his wisdom and guidance.
Curtis A. Hughes, 70, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at Tri-City Medical Center.
Born Nov. 7, 1930, in Cambridge, Mass., he lived in Vista for 13 years.
He worked for the Oceanside Police Department for 17 years and retired on Aug. 6, 1978.
He served with the U.S. Marine Corps for 14 years as a staff sergeant with combat duty in Korea.
Mr. Hughes is survived by his wife of 50 years, Midori Hughes of Vista; son and daughter-in-law Kurt and Mary Hughes of Crestline; daughters and sons-in-law Reiko and Chuck Kingan of Oceanside and Karen and Danny Billingsley of Tucson, Ariz.; and grandchildren Kylie, Grant, Cody, Joshua, Kristine, Thea, Steven and Lindsay.
Mr. Hughes's ashes will be scattered at sea by the U.S. Navy.
The family suggests memorial donations to Vitas Hospice, 3880 Rio San Diego Drive, Suite 950, San Diego, CA 92108.
North County Cremation Service is handling arrangements.

Kathy Hack, 41
ENCINITAS - Kathy A. Hack, 41, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at her home.
Born Jan. 18, 1960, in Crescent City, she lived in Encinitas for 10 years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Hack is survived by her husband Ben Hack of Encinitas; son Christopher Castanon of Arizona, stepdaughters Magan Hack of Viroqua, Wis., Stephanie Hack of Encinitas; stepson Trevor Hack of Encinitas; mother Edith Christiansen of Banning; and brother Ace Christiansen of Seattle.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at their family residence. A private cremation and inurnment is planned.

Walter Crapo, 85

ESCONDIDO - Walter H. Crapo, 85, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at Palomar Medical Center.
Born March 11, 1916, in San Francisco, he lived in Escondido for seven years. He was an apartment owner/manager for 12 years.
Mr. Crapo was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Y. Crapo, on May 11, 1999.
He is survived by sons and daughter-in-law Roy and Fran Crapo of Columbia; daughter and son-in-law Judi and Gary Fluharty of Escondido; sisters Marie Amberson of Palm Desert and Lydia Langston of Aptos; grandchildren Brad Ware, Elke Ware, Brandi DeMerse, Jamie Van Skyke, Matthew Van Skyke, Vonnie Crapo, DeDe Crapo, Christie Crapo, Mike McKee, Sharon Bickell and Greg McKee; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. today, March 20, at Hidden Valley Christian Church with the Rev. Alan Pickering officiating. A scattering at sea is planned.

Leona Brant, 89

ESCONDIDO - Leona Marie Baker Brant, 89, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at Palomar Medical Center.
Born June 23, 1911, in Lawton, Iowa, she lived in Escondido for 50 years.
She was a Navy chauffeur during World War II and a dress designer to Hollywood actresses and property owner.
She was an accomplished artist in oils and raised roses and orchids and was a world traveler. She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Brant was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; four brothers; and a daughter.
She is survived by her son Dean Moffatt of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Viewing was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 19, at McLeod Mortuary. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today, March 20, at McLeod Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Eckel Kamp officiating. Interment icon will follow at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego.

Mary Knudsen, 98

FALLBROOK - Mary E. Knudsen, 98, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at her home.
Born Oct. 7, 1902, in Denmark, she lived in Fallbrook for 37 years. She was a homemaker. She came to America when she was four years old.
Mrs. Knudsen was preceded in death by her husband, Knud A. Knudsen in 1980, and sons Ernest A. Knudsen and Harvey A. Knudsen. She is survived by sons Donald R. Knudsen of Fallbrook, Charles E. Knudsen of Kelso, Wash., and Cecil A. and wife Betsey Knudsen of Mojave; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, at Berry-Bell & Hall Fallbrook Chapel with Dr. Richard Miller officiating. Interment icon will follow at Fallbrook Masonic Cemetery with Miller officiating.

Guerin Baker, 49

OCEANSIDE - Guerin Baker, 49, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at her home. She lived in Cavalier Estates.
Ms. Baker is survived by her mother Betty Jones of Oceanside; son Bobby Baker of Long Beach; brother Scott Jones of Oregon; and boyfriend Robert Taylor of Oceanside.
A private cremation is planned.

Andrew Teel, 86

ADA, Okla. - Andrew "Andy" G. Teel, 86, died Friday, March 9, 2001, at Veterans Medical Center in Sulphur, Okla.
Born Feb. 21, 1914, in Oklahoma, he lived in Escondido for 52 years before returning to Ada to be near his sister. He worked for the San Diego County Water Authority for 25 years before retiring. During World War II he served with distinction in an Oklahoma Artillery Unit in the 45th Division. He survived Anzio and Germany, and received the Purple Heart.
Mr. Teel was preceded in death by his wife, Glennie, in 1983. He is survived by sister Inez Cassady of Ada, Okla.; nieces Collene Walker of Ada and Melvina Ruggles of Escondido; and nephew Phillip Adams of San Diego.
Graveside services were held at the Rosedale Cemetery, Saturday, March 10, in Ada.

Charlotte Cook-Vierling, 87

VISTA - Charlotte P. Cook-Vierling, 87, died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at Tri-City Medical Center.
Born Dec. 30, 1913, in Hoboken, N.J., she lived in Vista for 35 years. She was a homemaker and supporter of the local animal shelter.
Mrs. Cook-Vierling was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Vierling on Feb. 13, 1987. She is survived by cousins Liz James-Dunn of Andover, N.J., Robin E. Divine of Brick, N.J., and Heidi L. Brown of Hopatcong, N.J.
A graveside service is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, at Garden of Revelation, Eternal Hills Memorial Park with Dr. Richard L. Miller officiating.
The family suggests memorial donations to The Animal Shelter, 300 N. Coast Highway, Oceanside, CA 92054.

Bona Mitts, 95

VISTA - Bona Mitts, 95, died Friday, March 16, 2001, at Mar Vista of heart failure.
Born Sept. 28, 1905, in Parkersburg, W. Va., she lived in Vista for 54 years. She retired as a nurse in 1979 from Tri-City Medical Center and had also been a nurse at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido since the late 1940s.
She was a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Nursing, a co-owner of Vista Flowers from 1946 to 1972 and a member of Community Church of Vista since 1946.
Mrs. Mitts was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Mitts, on March 21, 2000. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law Donald and Noelene Mitts of Laughlin, Nev.; daughters and son-in-law Constance and David McCollum of Vista and Barbara Burnell of Mar Vista; grandchildren Tracie Burns of Vista, Robert McCollum of Vista and Tom McCollum of Las Vegas; and great-grandchild Sami Tolodo.
A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, at Eternal Hills Chapel with Dr. Hugh Brom officiating. Burial will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.
