Lyle Smith, 83
VISTA - Lyle Clifford Smith, 83, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at his brother's home in El Cajon.
Born Feb. 18, 1917, in Washington Township, Iowa, he lived in Vista since February and had lived in El Cajon for many years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War, retiring with the rank of chief after 20 years.
Mr. Smith is survived by his daughter, Sharon L. Steusel of Vista and Joyce A. Hardy of San Diego; brother Thomas J. Smith of El Cajon; sisters Thelma Gomel of Northboro, Iowa, and Bethine Armstrong of Clarinda, Iowa; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
A private cremation is planned. A graveside service and inurnment will take place at Northboro Cemetery in Northboro, Iowa, with full military honors.

Margaret Quartiano, 74
ESCONDIDO - Margaret Quartiano, 74, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, of cancer, at Redwood Terrace Health Center.
Born July 7, 1926, in San Diego, she lived her entire life in San Diego County, spending the last 30 years in Escondido. She worked for Vista National Bank from 1954 to 1968 and was a bowler in San Diego and the O.G.A.C. League in Oceanside as well as the Women's Trio League in Vista in the 50s and 60s.
Mrs. Quartiano was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, James Quartiano, in February 1999. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Loretta Pugh of San Diego County; two nephews of San Diego County; and three nieces of San Diego County.
No service was held. Her ashes were scattered at sea on Saturday, Oct. 28.
Jose Saavedra, 50
ESCONDIDO - Jose M. Saavedra, 50, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, in Escondido.
Born July 19, 1950, in Guanajato, Mexico, he lived in Escondido for 30 years. He was a greenskeeper for American Golf Corp.
Mr. Saavedra is survived by his wife of 19 years, Florentina Saavedra of Escondido; father Inocente Saavedra of Vista; son Joshua Saavedra of Escondido; daughter Pearl Saavedra of Escondido; brothers Jesus Saavedra of Vista, Louis Rey Saavedra of Tehachapi, Juventino Saavedra of Escondido and Jose Saavedra of Bakersfield; and sisters Ampara Contreras and Angelina Carapia, both of Tehachapi, Ophelia Jimenez of Oceanside and Ma Carmen Enriquez of Vista.
Visitation was held Tuesday, Nov. 7, at McLeod Mortuary Chapel. A graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m. today, Nov. 8, at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Burial will follow at 11 a.m.

Helen Bach, 94
ROGUE RIVER - Helen Bach, 94, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at her home.
Born Nov. 13, 1905, in Mystic, Conn., she lived in Rogue River since 1977 and had lived in Escondido. She was a member of the River Valley Community Church and enjoyed painting and ceramics.
Mrs. Bach was preceded in death by her first husband, S.C. Friend, in 1954; and her second husband, William Bach, in 1987. She is survived by her daughters, Helen Clark of Florida and Nancy Sanders of Rogue River; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at the River Valley Community Church in Grants Pass, Ore.

Gerald Reynolds, 79
CARLSBAD - Gerald D. Reynolds, 79, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, at Carlsbad Brighton Gardens.
Born May 17, 1921, in Nebraska, he lived in Carlsbad for one year. He was a doctor with the Bellflower Medical Group before retiring and served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. He graduated from Pasadena Nazarene College before attending Loma Linda Medical School.
Dr. Reynolds is survived by his wife of 56 years, Phyllis M. Reynolds of Carlsbad; sons Jon K. Reynolds of Leucadia and James H. Reynolds of Roseville; daughters Kris Haeger of Leucadia and Kathy Reynolds of Kansas; and nine grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Oceanside, with the Rev. Ted Johnson officiating.

LAKESIDE - Margaret Lee Dawes, 66, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at Kaiser Permanente Hospital.
Born Sept. 18, 1934, in Los Angeles, she lived in San Diego County for 59 years, attending elementary and high school in Fallbrook.
Mrs. Dawes is survived by her husband of 49 years, Marland J. Dawes of Lakeside; sons Terry Dawes and James Dawes, both of Lakeside, and Donald Dawes of Ruidosa, N.M.; daughter Debora Wilson of Ramona; two brothers; one sister; and six grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, at Berry-Bell & Hall Fallbrook Mortuary Chapel. Interment

SAN MARCOS - Joanne Comstock, 75, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at her home.
Born March 11, 1925, in Oklahoma City, Okla. she lived in San Marcos for 12 years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Comstock was preceded in death by her brother, William Nichols, in May 1971. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Paul B. Comstock of San Marcos; daughters Eileen Comstock of Socorro, N.M., Deborah Lumpkins of Ramona and Janice Comstock of Donner; son Daniel Comstock of Clear Lake; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, at the First United Methodist Church in Escondido, with the Revs. Ralph Johnson and Faith Conklin officiating. A private interment will take place at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma.

Bohuslav Masek, 79
Bohuslav "Bob" Masek, 79, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, at Western Medical Center in Anaheim.
Born Nov. 20, 1920, in Czechoslovakia, he immigrated to the United States in 1937 and lived in Temecula for 10 years. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945, earning a Silver Star. He was a master jewelry polisher before retiring in 1986. He was an award-winning trapshooter.
Mr. Masek is survived by his wife of 54 years, Norma Jean Masek; sons and daughters-in-law Robert and Katy Masek of Marshall, Va., and Dr. Richard and Sheri Masek of La Mesa; grandchildren John, Brent, Kristen, Karen and Carolyn; and great-grandchildren Melia, Jessica, Jacob and Ryan.
A memorial Mass was held Tuesday, Oct. 31, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Temecula. A private cremation is planned.

Born July 7, 1910, in Newport Beach, she lived in Oceanside for 70 years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Brown is survived by her son, Benjamin Gabijan of Kingman, Ariz.; daughter Barbara Gabijan of Lemon Grove; sisters Francis Taylor of Garden Grove and Laura Carpenter of Roseburg, Ore.; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A private cremation is planned, with cremains to be scattered at sea.

ESCONDIDO - Carl H. Hall, 54, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, of lung cancer, at his home.
Born April 6, 1946, in Illinois, he lived in Escondido for five years. He worked in the hotel industry and business security before retiring in July 1995. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, World Wildlife Federation, San Diego Zoological Society and the United States Humane Society. He enjoyed trains and boats.
Mr. Hall is survived by his wife of 12 years, Gloria Leitch Hall of Escondido; brothers and sisters-in-law Calvin and Kathy Bass and Craig Bass, all of Chicago; nephew Matthew; and nieces April and Connie.

LAS VEGAS - Jeffrey D. Bardon, 45, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, in Las Vegas.
Born Feb. 5, 1955, in Corona, he lived in Las Vegas for five years. He was the owner/operator of a tool business for 20 years.
Mr. Bardon is survived by his father and stepmother, Thomas J. and Nancy M. Bardon of Fallbrook; brothers Larry Bardon, Greg Bardon, Kevin Valentino, Chris Valentino and Scott Valentine; and sister Lisa Henderson.

Born April 17, 1952, in San Diego, she lived in Oceanside for 48 years. She was a relocation coordinator for Ace Relocation Systems for nine years.
Mrs. Usalis is survived by her husband, Roger K. Usalis of Oceanside; father George Vojtko of Mira Mesa; brothers Greg Vojtko of Wildomar and Mark Vojtko of Reston; and sisters Christine Vojtko and Melissa Childers, both of San Diego.

OCEANSIDE - Dana Larsen, 22, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, in a bicycle accident in Oceanside.
Born May 7, 1978, in Oceanside, he lived in Oceanside for 22 years. He served as a lance corporal for the U.S. Marine Corps and was a member of the Carlsbad Community Church. He was league secretary for Surf Bowl and graduated from El Camino High School in 1996.
Mr. Larsen is survived by his mother and father, Holly and Paul Larsen of Oceanside; brother Derek Larsen of Oceanside; sister Stacie Larsen of Oceanside; and grandmother Pauline Larsen of Oceanside.

John Halloran, 76
VALLEY CENTER - John "Jack" William Halloran, 76, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, in Escondido.
Born Aug. 25, 1924, in Wilmington, Del., he lived in Valley Center for 37 years. He was a teacher for the Bellflower School District as well as others. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was an avid horse racing fan.
Mr. Halloran is survived by his wife of 40 years, Valerie Halloran of Valley Center; sister-in-law June Hoveland of Minneapolis; and brother-in-law Ken Hoveland of Fargo, N.D.
A prayer service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 9, at McLeod Mortuary Chapel. Interment

OCEANSIDE - Herman L. Ettman, 82, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, in Oceanside.
Born Sept. 9, 1918, in New York City, he lived in Oceanside for 26 years. He served in the U.S. Army, retiring as lieutenant colonel, and was a member of the Elks Club.
Mr. Ettman was preceded in death by his daughter, Carol Ann Ettman, in 1968. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Omagh Ettman of Oceanside; daughter and son-in-law Peggy and Gene Rantanen of Santa Barbara; sister Edith Green of Lincoln City, Ore.; and granddaughter Rebecca.

FALLBROOK - Donald William Garr, 77, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, in Fallbrook.
Born Dec. 8, 1922, in Vicksburg, Ind., he lived in Fallbrook for 45 years. He worked for the federal civil service at Camp Pendleton before retiring. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1941 to 1961, retiring as a master sergeant. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1924, in Fallbrook; and one grandchild.
