Joseph Dessert, 93
ESCONDIDO - Joseph Dessert, 93, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at Sunbridge Care Center East.
Born Oct. 18, 1907, in Kansas City, Mo., he lived in Escondido for four years. He was a sound engineer for NBC Hollywood before retiring. He owned Joe Dessert TV Service for many years and was a ham radio operator and knew Morse code.
Mr. Dessert was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Frances Dessert, in 1985. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Ronald F. Brown of Escondido; brother, the Rev. James A. Dessert of Los Angeles; niece Zoe Sheppard of St. Louis; and grandchildren Melissa Brown Mullen of Riverside, Jill R. Brown of Del Mar and Nickolaus Brown of Los Angeles.

Wellington Hammond, 97
SAN MARCOS - Wellington Anthony Hammond, 97, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, in San Marcos.
Born Aug. 2, 1903, in St. Louis, he lived in San Marcos for 49 years. He was a rear admiral for the U.S. Navy for 25 years. He was president of the U.S. Naval Academy Class of '27 in San Diego and a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church, Knight's of Columbus.
Mr. Hammond was preceded in death by his wife, Evangeline G. Hammond, in 1988. He is survived by his brother-in-law and wife, Wilmont S. and Cleora Eckhout of Corvallis, Ore.; sister Ellen Tiefenbrunn of Bethlehem, Pa.; and nieces Leora "Lee" Payne of Phoenix and Cheryl Boyd of San Diego.
A rosary will be recited at 9:45 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at St. Mark's Catholic Church. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. following the recitation of the rosary, with the Rev. George Dunkley officiating. Interment icon will take place at 2:30 p.m. after the Mass at Holy Cross Cemetery in San Diego, with Deacon Joe Wisocky officiating.
The family suggests memorial donations to St. Mark's Catholic Church Building Fund, 1145 W. Discovery St., San Marcos, CA 92069.

Pamela Usalis, 48
OCEANSIDE - Pamela Ann Usalis, 48, died Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000, at her home.
Born April 17, 1952, in San Diego, she lived in Oceanside for 48 years. She was a relocation coordinator for Ace Relocation Systems for nine years.
Mrs. Usalis is survived by her husband, Roger K. Usalis of Oceanside; father George Vojtko of Mira Mesa; brothers Greg Vojtko of Wildomar and Mark Vojtko of Reston; and sisters Christine Vojtko and Melissa Childers, both of San Diego.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at Allen Bros. Mortuary, Vista Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Kleinschmidt officiating. A private cremation is planned.

Donald Hollis, 76
SUN CITY - Donald Eugene Hollis, 76, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, of heart failure, at Menifee Valley Medical Center in Sun City.
Born July 1, 1924, in Altadena, he lived in Sun City for 14 years. He was an electronic engineer for NOSC for 35 years and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946. He was a member of the Cherry Hills Golf Club and the Sun City Computer Club. He enjoyed computer work and building furniture and bird houses. He had a general class license as a ham radio operator.
Mr. Hollis is survived by his wife, Betty Hollis of Sun City; son Roy Hollis of Phoenix; daughters Patricia Johansson of Los Osos and Donna Kiger of Agoura; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service was held Sunday, Nov. 5, at Miller-Jones Mortuary. Burial took place at Riverside National Cemetery.

Robert Scherman, 85
SUN CITY - Robert Scherman, 85, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, of heart failure, at Menifee Valley Medical Center.
Born June 14, 1915, in Brazil, Ind., he lived in Sun City for four years. He was a self-employed songwriter/composer in Hollywood for 60 years. He performed a Mozart piano concert at the age of nine. He discovered Nat King Cole, recording him singing "All For You," Scherman's composition, and triggering Cole's first release by Capitol Records.
Mr. Scherman was preceded in death by his mother, Marie Scherman; and father Bismarck Scherman. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Glenda Scherman of Sun City; daughter Carol Dofflemeyer of Reno, Nev.; and son Richard Scherman of Kansas City, Mo.
A family burial will take place at 11:30 a.m. today, at Elsinore Valley Cemetery.

Clara Baca, 76
SUN CITY - Clara Baca, 76, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at Menifee Valley Medical Center in Sun City.
Born Aug. 22, 1924, in Magdalena, N.M., she lived in Sun City for three years. She was an executive secretary for Union Federal Savings in California for 35 years and had worked for the president and CEO of California Federal Savings. She was a member of St. Vincent's Catholic Church in Sun City and enjoyed playing bingo and keno, gardening and shopping.
Mrs. Baca was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Dionicio Baca; brother Santiago Chavez; and numerous nephews and nieces. She is survived by her daughter, Darlene Arellano of Monterey Park; brother Placido Chavez of Grants, N.M.; sisters Christina Gomez of Montebello, Frances Hahn of Moreno Valley and Martha Romero of Palm Desert; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 9, at Miller-Jones Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church. Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area 2.

Mary Reilly, 80
SUN CITY - Mary Murphy Reilly, 80, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, of heart failure, at Menifee Valley Medical Center.
Born May 31, 1920, in Dubuque, Iowa, she lived in Sun City for four years. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed traveling, sewing, knitting, Jeopardy and crossword puzzles. She was a member of St. Vincent's Catholic Church and the League of Women Voters and the Mah Jong Club of Coronado. She was also a member of the Menifee Valley Medical Center Auxiliary.
Mrs. Reilly is survived by her husband of 48 years, Redmond Reilly of Sun City; daughters, Bridget Plank of Bonita, Michaela Reilly of Alameda and Mary Ellen Reimers of Chino Hills; sons Daniel Reilly of Oakland and Timothy Reilly of Hollywood; sisters Ellen Flood of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Ann Ginder of Dubuque; brothers Charles Murphy of Marion, Iowa, and Kathy Piekenbrock of Dubuque; and six grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at Miller-Jones Mortuary. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church. Burial will take place at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

Donald Servantes, 64
LAKE ELSINORE - Donald Robert Servantes, 64, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, of cancer, at his home.
Born May 24, 1936, in San Juan Bautista he lived in Lake Elsinore for five years. He was a foreman for Eli Polony Meat Co. for 18 years and served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 20 years. He enjoyed fishing, sporting events and spending time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Servantes was preceded in death by his son, Daniel R. Servantes, in 1998. He is survived by his wife, Maria Servantes of Lake Elsinore; sons Dennis R. Servantes of Lake Elsinore, David R. Servantes of Riverside and Darrin R. Servantes of Corona; daughter De Anna Servantes of Lake Elsinore; brother Kenneth Servantes of Portland, Ore.; and 18 grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 5 p.m., with a rosary recited at 4 p.m., today, Nov. 9, at Valley Funeral Home in Murrieta. Burial will take place at 9:15 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area 2.

Winthrop Hibberd, 68
VISTA - Winthrop B. Hibberd, 68, died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2000, of a heart attack, at his home.
Born Feb. 11, 1932, in Philadelphia, he lived in Vista. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea, where he spent 2 1/2 years as a prisoner of war.
Mr. Hibberd is survived by his daughter, Denise Hibberd of Paso Robles; grandson John Odom of Paso Robles; aunt Connie Brener of Vista; and two cousins of Vista.

Eugene Hatfield, 77
ESCONDIDO - Eugene McFarland Hatfield, 77, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, in Escondido.
Born April 15, 1923, in Billings, Mont., he lived in Escondido for seven years. He worked for Teamsters Local 683 before retiring in 1978. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, surviving the bombing of the USS Lexington in the Coral Sea. He witnessed the bombing of Hiroshima and was onboard the ship where the peace treaty with the Japanese was signed.
Mr. Hatfield was preceded in death by his son, John Doolittle, in March. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Ruth Hatfield of Escondido; sons Kelly P. Hatfield of Santee and Thomas C. Doolittle of Escondido; daughters and sons-in-law Teri Renee and Bronco Beachler, F. Susan Doolittle and Teri and Jay Bradley; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for family and close friends will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, at the family home, with the Rev. Paul Kugler officiating. A private cremation is planned.
The family suggests memorial donations to the American Lung Association, 2750 Fourth Ave., San Diego, CA 92103.

Francis Little, 80
HUNTINGTON BEACH - Francis Clarence Little, 80, died Friday, Oct. 27, 2000, at Kaiser Hospital in Anaheim Hills.
Born July 9, 1920, in Yerington, Nev., he lived in Huntington Beach for one years and previously lived in San Diego County for three years. He was a construction supervisor for Turner Engineering for 50 years and served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
Mr. Little is survived by his sons, James Little of Huntington Beach, Harry Little of Oceanside and Stephen Little of Sequine, Texas; daughters Patricia Anderson of Fremont and Phyllis Davenport of Corpus Christi, Texas; brother Norman Little of Palm Desert; sisters Wanda Martin of Hesperia and Iris Roeder of Phoenix; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, Nov. 1, at Allen Bros. Mortuary, Vista Chapel, with the Rev. Roger H. Friend and VFW Post 7041 officiating. Burial took place at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, Nev.
The family suggests memorial donations to a charity of choice.

Marilee Thompson, 74
RAMONA - Marilee Thompson, 74, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, at Palomar Medical Center.
Born April 18, 1926, in Tillamook, Ore., she lived in Ramona for three years. She was a social worker for the city of Los Angeles before retiring in September 1996.
Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her grandson, Christopher Thompson, in 1992; her son, Lee Thompson, in 1981; and her husband, Herbert Thompson, in 1990. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Craig and Pat Thompson of Escondido; sister and brother-in-law Betty and Dale Emery of Stayton, Ark., and grandchildren Max and Tasha Thompson.
A private family gathering is planned.

Jesse Whitmer, 95
OCEANSIDE - Jesse Edward Whitmer, 95, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at Sunbridge Care & Rehabilitation.
Born in Brockton, N.Y., he lived in Oceanside for five months. He was a custom upholsterer.
Mr. Whitmer is survived by his former wife of 30 years, Marie Lowman of Oceanside; son and daughter-in-law Robert and Ellen Whitmer of Florida; daughter Joan Carey of Oceanside; brother and sister-in-law Vern and Dorothy Whitmer of Pennsylvania; and eight grandchildren.
No service will be held at the request of the deceased. A private cremation is planned.

Pat Dye, 69
ESCONDIDO - Pat L. Dye, 69, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000.
Born May 7, 1931, in Dayton, Ohio, she lived in Escondido. She was an assistant project manager for Avco Community Developers for 20 years and was a founding member of the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation in Poway.
Ms. Dye is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Dean Dye of Escondido and Scott and Dorothy Dye of Utah; daughter Toni Farish of Los Angeles; sisters Denise Craven of California and Joy Jones of Ohio; grandchildren Amanda Dye and Rachel Highman; and great-grandchild Jordan Highman.
A private memorial service is planned.

Pedro Amador, 40
VISTA - Pedro Amador, 40, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, in Tijuana, Mexico.
Born Nov. 21, 1959, he lived in Vista for 30 years. He worked for Armor Safe Technology.
Mr. Amador was preceded in death by his father, Pedro R. Amador, in 1997. He is survived by his mother, Teresa Amador of Vista; son Steven Amador of Vista; daughter Monica Amador of Vista; brothers and sisters-in-law Juan and Margarita Amador and Evaristo and Silvia Amador, all of Vista; and sisters and brothers-in-law Norman and Michael Albert of Springfield, Ill., Maria and Jorge Ulloa of San Diego, Margarita and Jose Castaneta of Tijuana and Felicitas and Carlos Murillo, Sofia and Eddy Arnold and Maria and Victor Saavedra, all of Vista.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. today, Nov. 10, at Eternal Hills Chapel. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 13, at St. Francis Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Lucille Stoneking, 85
ESCONDIDO - Lucille Stoneking, 85, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, in Escondido.
Born Nov. 26, 1914, in Escondido, she lived in Escondido for 40 years. She worked for J.C. Penney for 25 years. She was a member of P.N.G. Rebekah Lodge, Iroquois, San Diego; past matron of Eastern Star, Iroquois, San Diego; Eastern Star, Huron, San Diego and Escondido; and a 60-year member of the First United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Stoneking was preceded in death by her son, Donald Stoneking; brothers Elmer Wiles and Earl Wiles; and husband Clifford Stoneking. She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Escher of Escondido; sister Mildred Minske of Huron, S.D.; and grandchildren Dan Escher of Eugene, Ore., and Sharon, Sandra and Warren Escher and Kit, Mark and Erica Stoneking, all of Escondido.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ralph Jones officiating. A private interment will take place at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Born Jan. 4, 1920, in Washington, she lived in Moreno Valley for one year. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Baer is survived by her son, John Baer of Canyon Lake; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at noon Monday, Nov. 13, at El Toro Memorial Park. Burial will follow.
