OXNARD - Eva Mae Patterson, 78, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, in Oxnard.
Born Aug. 31, 1922, in Malden, Mo., she lived in Fallbrook and Vista for 51 years.
Mrs. Patterson is survived by her son, Bill Patterson of Ventura; daughter Carol Jefferis of Conroe, Texas; brothers Delbert Barrett of Oceanside and Charles Barrett; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.
The family suggests memorial donations to Hillcrest Children's Home, c/o Living Waters Christian Fellowship, 2000 Reche Road, Fallbrook, CA 92028.

Charles Eymann, 87

CARLSBAD - Charles R. Eymann, 87, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, in Carlsbad.
Born Oct. 11, 1912, in San Diego, he lived in Carlsbad. He was self-employed in the vending machine business and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Inurnment will take place at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma.
Oceanside Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Marjorie Pilcher, 77
VISTA - Marjorie J. Pilcher, 77, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at her home.
Born Dec. 29, 1922, in San Diego, she lived in Vista for 50 years.
Mrs. Pilcher was preceded in death by her son, Stephen Brown, in 1999.
She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Norman Joe and Mary Brown of Fallbrook and Richard Hemphill of Escondido; daughters and sons-in-law Charlet and Lucio Baca of Vista and Dawn and George Hesse of Escondido; grandchildren Barbara and Bobby Brown, Susan Tyler, Jeanie Hill, Mary Cruz, Dane, Erin and Eden Hesse and Michael and David; great-grandchildren Jessica and Michael Cruz, LeeAnn Baternik, Cindy and Sarah Tyler and Amber Johnson; and great-great-grandchild Bryan Johnson.
A private cremation is planned.
North County Cremation Service is handling arrangements.

Robert Edmiston, 36

SAN MARCOS - Robert Arthur Edmiston, 36, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, at his home.
Born Dec. 7, 1963, in Northridge, he lived in San Marcos for 20 years.
Mr. Edmiston was preceded in death by his father, Richard A. Edmiston Sr., on June 9, 1998. He is survived by his mother, Joyce M. Edmiston of San Marcos; son Clayton Edmiston of San Marcos; and brothers and sister-in-law Joseph L. Edmiston of Washington, Ronald A. Edmiston of Arkansas, Richard A. Edmiston Jr. of Escondido and Michael D. and Jill Edmiston of San Marcos.
A wake will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at his home.
North County Cremation is handling arrangements.

Joanna Okonski, 86
TEMECULA - Joanna Eugenia Okonski, 86, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, of congestive heart failure.
Born May 24, 1914, in Dubuque, Iowa, she lived in Orange County for 26 years before moving to Temecula. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church in Temecula and the Women's Guild.
Mrs. Okonski is survived by her daughters, Barbara Malkowski, Christine C. Brown and Elizabeth A. Okonski; son Chester Andrew Okonski; brother Casimir Wisniewski; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held and a rosary recited Tuesday, Oct. 10, at Saddleback Chapel in Tustin. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today, Oct. 11, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Tustin. Burial will take place at Ascension Cemetery in Lake Forest.

Lawrence Root, 75

FALLBROOK - Lawrence M. Root, 75, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, in Fallbrook.
Born Oct. 12, 1924, in Hollywood, he lived in Fallbrook. He worked for the Los Angeles Police Department, retiring after 25 years. He served as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II with the First Raiders in the Solomon Islands and Guadacanal. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church for many years.
Mr. Root is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Root of Fallbrook; six sons; four daughters; and 15 grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 11, at Fallbrook Masonic Cemetery, with the Rev. Bernie Rapp officiating.
The family suggests memorial donations to St. Vincent de Paul Village, c/o the Rev. Joe Carroll, 3350 E St., San Diego, CA 92102.

Clarence Christ, 71

OCEANSIDE - Clarence "Bud" Christ, 71, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at his home.
Born Oct. 16, 1928, in Lafayette, Ind., he lived in Oceanside for 53 years. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1968 after serving 22 years and from civil service after 25 years. He was a member of Oceanside Masonic Lodge #381.
Mr. Christ is survived by his wife of 52 years, Yvonne Christ of Oceanside; son Robert L. Christ of Oceanside; daughters Sandra K. Moline of Vista and Barbara Ann Griffin of Littleton, Colo.; sister Nancy C. Smithson of Phoenix; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, at Oceanside Mortuary. A graveside service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park, with Oceanside Masonic Lodge #381 officiating.

Ruth Stewart, 71

POWAY - Ruth Frances Stewart, 71, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at her home.
Born Sept. 27, 1929, in Dewitt County, Ill., she lived in Poway for 40 years. She was a self-employed health-care provider before retiring.
Mrs. Stewart is survived by her daughters, Darla Miller of Vian, Okla., Carol Sullivan of Poway, Staretta Wieneke of Seattle and Virginia Womack of Truth or Consequences, N.M.; and six grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at Dearborn Memorial Park, with the Rev. Sam Downing officiating. Inurnment will follow.

Janis Pratt, 52
ESCONDIDO - Janis Elaine Pratt, 52, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, of cardiac arrest, at Sunbridge of El Cajon.
Born May 29, 1948, in Escondido, she lived in Escondido for 45 years. She was a waitress for several restaurants, including Bob's Big Boy in El Cajon and the Wagon Wheel Family Restaurant in Escondido. She graduated from San Marcos High School in 1966 and was Miss Escondido for 1967-68.
Mrs. Pratt is survived by her mother and father, Alice and Richard Inga of Escondido; son Corry D. Pratt of San Diego; brothers Richard Inga of Valencia and Robert Inga of Rialto; sister Joanne Stetler of Lake Stevens, Wash.; grandmothers Bernice Inga Rhodes and Evelyn P. Rosenfield, both of Escondido; grandchildren Nikole, Corry Jr., Jayson and Shianne Pratt; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at the First United Methodist Church in Escondido, with the Rev. Earl Guy officiating. A private interment will take place at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
The family suggests memorial donations to the American Lung Association, PO Box 3879, San Diego, CA 92163-1879.

Kaya Birch-Valverde, infant

ESCONDIDO - Kaya Monoko Birch-Valverde, infant, was born and died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, in San Diego.
Kaya is survived by her mother and father, Melanie Birch and Ryan Valverde of Escondido; and grandparents Barbara and Kenneth Birch of Escondido, Mark and Darlene Scott of Ramona and Ernie Valverde of Escondido.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at Santa Ysabel Mission Cemetery. Burial will follow at 11 a.m.

William O'Neil, 53
SAN MARCOS - William O'Neil, 53, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, in Escondido.
Born Aug. 15, 1947, in the Bronx, N.Y., he lived in San Marcos for 30 years.
He was a maintenance manager for American Airlines for 28 years.
Mr. O'Neil is survived by his son, Sean O'Neil of San Marcos; sister Barbra Monardo of Florida; and grandson Ethan Goeres of San Marcos.
A graveside service will be held at noon Thursday, Oct. 12, at San Marcos Cemetery. Burial will follow.

Ruth Henry, 89
OCEANSIDE - Ruth Henry, 89, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, in Oceanside.
Born Oct. 23, 1910, in Missouri, she lived in Oceanside for more than 20 years. She was a homemaker.
A private service is planned.

Narciso Rodriguez, 74
ESCONDIDO - Narciso Rodriguez, 74, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, in Escondido.
Born Sept. 10, 1926, in New Mexico, he lived in Escondido for 26 years. He was a self-employed security officer for 20 years and served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years.
Mr. Rodriguez is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, David Rodriguez of Grants, N.M., Joseph and Roseanne Rodriguez of Albuquerque, N.M., Mark and Rusty Rodriguez of Escondido and Frank and Carolyn Rodriguez of Temecula; grandchildren Christina, Bryan, Pamela and David Rodriguez; and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma.

Mac McGuffin, 92
LAKE SAN MARCOS - Millard Samuel "Mac" McGuffin, 92, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at a San Marcos convalescent center.
Born Feb. 9, 1908, in Adeline, Ill., he lived at Lake San Marcos since 1974. Mr. McGuffin graduated from the University of Illinois in 1933 and worked in banking for 40 years.
He retired in 1973 as senior vice president of United California Bank in Los Angeles.
He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. During his long career in banking, he was active in many professional organizations, including the American Bankers Association and the Western College Placement Association. He was also very active in service organizations. In 1967, he was elected chairman of the board of directors of the California Heart Association, and in 1969, he was elected to the board of directors of the American Heart Association. After retirement, he was active in a variety of service organizations, including the Lake San Marcos Kiwanis Club, the United Way and the YMCA.
Mr. McGuffin is survived by his wife of 61 years, Alice W. McGuffin of Lake San Marcos; and son and daughter-in-law Robert W. and Darlene P. McGuffin of Encinitas.
A private memorial celebration was held.

Elaine Wilson, 63
OCEANSIDE - Elaine P. Wilson-, 63, died in Oceanside.
Born Oct. 26, 1936, in Pontotoc, Miss., she lived in Oceanside for 31 years.
She was a unit Secretary at Tri-City Medical Center and a member of the Second Missionary Baptist Church of Oceanside.
Mrs. Wilson-Spears was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Wilson, in 1993; brothers Oscar Pinson, Ervin Pinson and Tom Pinson; and sister Alma Pinson. She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law Terry M. Spears of Laguna Niguel, Elton L. and Donna Spears of Fontana, Freddie Spears of Oceanside and Ernest A. Pinson of Memphis, Tenn.; daughters and sons-in-law Jacqueline E. Spears and Robbie C. Spears, both of Vista, Shirley E. and Nelson Quiles of Florida and Leverette V. Spears and Carlton Lisenbee of Oceanside; sisters Ida Mae Rayford of Memphis, Annie B. Farr and Leona Gordon, both of Pontotoc, and Josephine Stokes of Lamberts, Miss.; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 11, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, at Second Missionary Baptist Church of Oceanside. Burial will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Keith Arthur Collins, M.D.
Keith Arthur Collins, M.D., died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, in Sedona, Ariz.
Dr. Collins joined Penn Elm in 1987 and retired from practice in March of 1996. He conceived the idea of an affiliation between Penn Elm and Scripps Clinic in 1991.
He was an extremely bright and knowledgeable man who, apart from his medical degree, had a degree in engineering and had piloted planes back and forth across the Himalayas during World War II.
He had a terrific sense of humor, although his demeanor suggested that he could well have been one of the stars of the film, "Grumpy Old Men." He also was clever enough to marry an Englishwoman.
A celebration of life will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, in Penn Elm Medical Group parking lot.
Keith is survived by his beloved wife, Jean; son Keith B. Collins and wife Rachel of Fort Benning, Ga.; daughter Deborah Geiger and husband Ken; and grandson Ross of Peoria, Ariz.; son Patrick Collins of New York; sister Ruth Barfell of Laguna Beach, Calif.; brother Lester Collins and wife Kit of Laguna Beach, Calif.; brother Bradford Collins and wife Constance of Escondido, Calif., and all of his friends and colleagues at Penn Elm Medical Group of Escondido.

Jack Cain, 72
OCEANSIDE - Jack Roland Cain, 72, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, of a heart attack, in Oceanside.
Born Aug. 8, 1928, in Westminster, he lived in Oceanside for 10 years.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, and worked as a truck driver, a firefighter for the Forestry Service and a custodian for the Presbyterian Church in Westminster before retiring.
He was a bartender at Carl's Tavern during retirement and a lifetime member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He enjoyed fishing, playing poker at the American Legion and shooting pool.
Mr. Cain is survived by his companion of 10 years, Cathy Hill of Oceanside; and sister Jeanette Finnerty of Westminster.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall in Vista. A private cremation is planned with burial at sea.
The Omega Society is handling arrangements.
