Vernon Wolfe, 78
FALLBROOK - Vernon Richard Wolfe, 78, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, in Fallbrook.
Born July 14, 1922, in Garber, Okla., he lived in Fallbrook for four years. He was the head track and field coach for the University of Southern California for 25 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame and the USC Hall of Fame.
Mr. Wolfe is survived by his wife, Marilyn Wolfe of Fallbrook; sons Corey Wolfe of Washington and Dean Wolfe of Lomita; and one grandchild.
A funeral service is pending. Interment
will take place at a later date at Roosevelt Memorial Park in Los Angeles.

Dan Van Ness, 86
RANCHO BERNARDO - Dan Van Ness, 86, died Friday, Oct. 20, of a massive cerebral hemorrhage, at Pomerado Hospital.
Born Nov. 4, 1913, in Kansas City, Mo., he lived in Rancho Bernardo for 22 years. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1935 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served as captain in the Reserves after the war. He established an endowment for the International Institute for Entrepreneurs at California State University, San Marcos.
Mr. Van Ness was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Van Ness, in 1995.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma, with Chaplain Nerice Kaufman of Elizabeth Hospice officiating. Inurnment will follow.

CARLSBAD - Leola Richards, 86, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at Scripps Memorial in Encinitas.
Born Aug. 15, 1914, in Negaunee, Mich., she lived in Carlsbad for 24 years. She worked for Moore Business Forms before retiring in 1976. She enjoyed traveling and playing bridge and Scrabble.
Mrs. Richards was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Watz, in 1967; her husband, Bill Richards, in 1990; and her daughter, Joanne Engle, in 1981. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Bob Coutts of Long Beach, Patti and Mike Moder of Palm Desert and Gretchen and Bob Baker of Vista; sister Eleanor Keskey of Los Angeles; 16 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 27, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Carlsbad, with the Rev. Stephen McCall officiating.

Born July 25, 1911, near Santa Monica, she lived in Escondido for 15 years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Greer is survived by her husband of 67 years, Hugh B. Greer of Escondido; son and daughter-in-law David Hugh and Elizabeth Ann Greer of Escondido; grandson Brian H. Greer; and great-granddaughter Hailey E. Greer.
A funeral service will be held at noon Monday, Oct. 30, at Greenwood Mortuary in San Diego. Entombment will follow at Greenwood Mausoleum.

ESCONDIDO - Edith Mabel West, 76, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at her home.
Born July 3, 1924, in Arkansas, she lived in Escondido for seven years. She was a homemaker and helped run a farm in Salome, Ariz.
Mrs. West is survived by her husband of 62 years, Woodrow West of Escondido; sons and daughters-in-law Bill and Nancy West of San Marcos and Allen and Linda West of Torrance; daughters and sons-in-law Karen and Jim Thomas of Oakdale, Ill., and Nedra and Joe Whitaker of Mesa, Ariz.; sister Lora Kinion of Cushion, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held Thursday, Oct. 26, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 27, at Cathedral of the Valley Foursquare Church in Escondido, with the Rev. Joel Phillips officiating. Interment

PALA INDIAN RESERVATION - Anita Louise Castillo, 60, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, of renal failure, in San Diego.
Born Aug. 26, 1940, she lived on the Pala Indian Reservation for 50 years. She was an education coordinator at SCTCA.
Mrs. Castillo is survived by her companion, Gene Jackson of Pala; sons Joseph E. Castillo Sr., Anthony P. Castillo, Andrew H. Castillo, Theron G. Castillo and James C. Castillo, all of Pala; daughters Bernadette M. Castillo and Josephine R. Castillo, both of Pala, and Mildred E. Castillo of La Jolla; brothers Ernest McGill and Manuel Moro, both of Pala; sisters Juanita Ramirez of Sycuan and Mary Guachino of Pala; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

SAN DIEGO - Eloise Gibson Heller, 81, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at Pomerado Hospital.
Born Dec. 12, 1918, n Lakeland, Fla., she lived in San Diego for 20 years. She was a homemaker for 55 years.
Mrs. Heller was preceded in death by her husband, James Heller, in 1990. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, William and Bobbi Heller of Greenwood, Ind., Robert and Linda Heller and Thomas Heller, all of Seattle, and Richard and Julie Heller of Western Springs, Ill.; brother and sister-in-law John and Brownie Pickens of Plainfield, Ill.; sister Evelyn Case of St. Charles, Ill.; and three grandchildren.

Mrs. Lofgren is survived by her husband, Lloyd V. Lofgren of Vista and Edina; son Scott Lofgren of Minneapolis; daughters Jane Anderson of Boise, Idaho, and Ann McNamara of Derry, N.H.; brother Virgil Swanson of West St., Paul, Minn.; six granddaughters; and one great-grandson.

ESCONDIDO - Margarito Reyes Garcia, 89, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, in Escondido.
Born Feb. 22, 1911, in Tustin, he lived in Escondido for 53 years. He was a custodian for San Pasqual High school before retiring in 1964 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mr. Garcia is survived by his wife of 53 years, Francisca Garcia of Escondido; sons and daughters-in-law Salvador and Sharon Garcia of Ramona, Tomas and Linda Garcia of San Marcos and David and Kim Garcia of Elkridge, Md.; daughters and son-in-law Mary Lou Castillo of Encinitas and Concha and John Villalobos of San Marcos; brother and sister-in-law Dario and Lori Garcia of Spring Valley; sister Connie Caballero of Valley Center; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

CARLSBAD - Dolores Castro, 95, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at Tri-City Medical Center.
Born Jan. 29, 1905, in Cananea, Mexico, she lived in Carlsbad for 60 years. She was a homemaker for 80 years and a member of St. Patrick Church in Carlsbad since 1940. She was also a member of the seniors center. She met two popes while traveling in Europe.
Mrs. Castro was preceded in death by her husband, Jose Castro, on Oct. 22, 1982. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Peter and Cecelia Castro of Prescott, Ariz., and Joe and Irene Castro of Carlsbad; daughters and sons-in-law Mickie Pinmentel, Esther Ramos, Sarah and Alex Valdiveso and Celia and Ray Jimenez, all of Carlsbad; sister Ramona Alvarado of Carlsbad; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

DEL MAR - Candace Marie Smith, 51, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2000.
Born June 30, 1949, in Encinitas, she lived in North County her entire life. She attended San Dieguito High School and was the business manager of the Bill Smith Foreign Car Service of Solana Beach. She was a volunteer at the San Diego Food Bank and St. Vincent de Paul. She enjoyed golfing and gardening.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband of 27 years, Bill Smith; daughters Jennifer Smith de Perea Kihien of Arequipa, Peru, and Wendy Willingam of San Diego; son Mark Smith of Del Mar; and sister Sandra Stark of Solana Beach.
A private service is planned.

Born Feb. 23, 1958, in Calexico, he lived in Oceanside. He was a senior test equipment engineer at MV Technical Sales for six years.
Mr. Allbee is survived by his wife of 15 years, Kimberley Allbee; daughters Shelcy Allbee, Ashley Allbee and Kaylin Allbee; and mother Pauline Bishop.

OCEANSIDE - Thurman S. Gossett, 83, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at his home.
Born July 29, 1917, in Hastings, Okla., he lived in Oceanside for three years and had lived in Escondido for eight years. He was a heavy equipment operator for Imperial Irrigation District before retiring in 1982 and was a member of Moose Lodge in Imperial Valley.
Mr. Gossett was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite Gossett, in 1992. He is survived by his daughters and son-in-law, Joy Gossett Hatfield and husband Frank of Carlsbad, and Mary Eugenia Berkley of Hobe Sound, Fla.; grandchildren James Burnside, Kevin Hatfield, Elizabeth Campbell, Joni Fleschood and Kellie Senini; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

OCEANSIDE - Abraham Jimenez, 69, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at his home.
Born Dec. 12, 1930, in Zinzimeo, Mexico, he lived in San Diego County for 15 years. He was a welder for 50 years, most recently with Richins Ornamental Iron.
Mr. Jimenez is survived by his wife of 49 years, Abigail Jimenez of Oceanside; sons Abraham Jimenez, Miguel Jimenez and Roman Jimenez, all of Escondido, Javier Jimenez, Sergio Jimenez, Antonio Jimenez and Jose Jimenez, all of Oceanside, and Gustavo Jimenez and Manual Jimenez, both of Mexico; sisters Flora Jimenez and Carmen Jimenez both of Mexico, and Lola Jimenez of Canada; 21 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

ESCONDIDO - Leonard Holscher, 83, died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, in Escondido.
Born Nov. 21, 1916, in Minnesota, he lived n Escondido for 42 years. He owned Escondido Tree Service for 26 years before retiring and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mr. Holscher was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Rosalia Holscher, in 1991. He is survived by his daughters, Lenore Vega of Austin, Texas, Marita Wilson and Delores Thomas, both of Escondido; brother Gerald Holscher of Minneapolis; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
