Roberta Nichols, 82
SAN MARCOS - Roberta Celeste Nichols, 82, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at her home.
Born Nov. 11, 1917, in Omaha, Neb., she lived in San Marcos. She was an assembler for Hughes Aircraft for six years and a member of the Meadowlark Community Church in San Marcos.
Mrs. Nichols was preceded in death by her husband, Quincy B. Nichols, in 1994. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph B. and Karen Nichols of Fountain Valley and Warren S. and Pam Nichols of Costa Mesa; daughter Roberta Ann Nichols of Glendale; sister Betty Croft of Omaha, Neb.; and grandchildren Christine, Jeffrey and Jennifer Nichols.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at Meadowlark Community Church in San Marcos. A private cremation is planned with a private inurnment at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma.

William Lynch, 77
OCEANSIDE - William T. Lynch, 77, died Thursday, July 27, 2000, of Parkinson's disease, in Oceanside.
Born April 4, 1923, in Canton, Ohio, he lived in Oceanside for 13 years. He graduated from Alhambra High School and attended USC, Cal State, East LA College, Mount Sac and other colleges studying police sciences and business administration. He served in the U.S. Navy as chief petty officer on PT Boat 302, Squadron 22, in the Mediterranean Theatre during World War II and worked for the Monterey Park Police Department for 27 years, retiring as captain. He enjoyed horse races, hunting and fishing.
Mr. Lynch was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Lynch; father Joseph Lynch; brothers Colonel Jack Lynch and Edward Lynch. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Alberta Lynch of Oceanside; sons and daughters-in-law Michael and Donna Lynch of Oceanside, David and Dottie Lynch of Carlsbad and Jim and Judy Lynch of San Diego; sisters Kathleen Greer of Fountain Valley and Doris Zavales of Placentia; grandchildren Stephen, Shannon and Bryce; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, Aug. 1, at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.

Viola Fernsten, 99
ESCONDIDO - Viola J. Fernsten, 99, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000.
Born in Starlake, Wis., she lived in Escondido. She was a teacher for 30 years before retiring and a member of Eastern Star, White Shrine and the Retired Teacher's Association.
Mrs. Fernsten is survived by her son, Patrick R. Fairbanks of Sacramento; daughter Nancy F. Hartley of Escondido; sisters Pearl Anderson of Gig Harbor, Wash. and Vivian Morris of Scotts Valley; grandchildren Jerry, Kimberly, Susan, Gregory, Jeffrey, Heidi, Timothy and Jennifer; and great-grandchildren Celeste and Benjamin.
A graveside service was held Monday, Oct. 23, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Solvang.

FALLBROOK - Linda C. Tetu, 52, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, in Fallbrook.
Born Dec. 31, 1947, in Cincinnati, she lived in Fallbrook for six years. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Fallbrook.
Ms. Tetu is survived by her mother, Georgia Hacker of Buena Park; son Michael Tetu of Fallbrook; daughter Georgia Tetu of Fallbrook; and brother Bill Chapman of Irvine.
A memorial service will be held at a date to be determined by the family. A private cremation is planned.

VALLEY CENTER - Dorothy E. Liebherr, 92, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, in Escondido.
Born April 25, 1908, in Pomona, she lived in Valley Center for two years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Liebherr is survived by her sons, Fred Liebherr of Valley Center and Joseph J. Liebherr and James D. Liebherr, both of Minden, Nev.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Donna Huston, 80
ESCONDIDO - Donna L. Huston, 80, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, in Escondido.
Born April 24, 1920, in Ellisport, Wash., she lived in Escondido for 17 years and had lived in Needham, Mass., for 30 years. She was a homemaker and a volunteer for the Escondido Library for 12 years.
Mrs. Huston was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Huston, in 1986. She is survived by her son, John Huston of Delaware, Ohio; daughters Diane Dobbins of Escondido and Nancy Gruhl of Tuscon, Ariz.; and five grandchildren.
Interment will take place at Evergreen Eashelli Memorial Park in Seattle.

Born Sept. 19, 1927, in Providence, R.I., she lived in Oceanside for four years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Plante is survived by her son, Jerry Plante of Oceanside; daughters Rebecca Souza of New Bedford, Mass., Judith Lowery of Anaheim, Cynthia Baldridge of Ramona and Melissa McConnel of Oceanside; brother Gerard Iuliano of Anaheim; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, at Mission San Luis Rey Parish Chapel, with the Rev. Michel Gagnon officiating. Burial will take place at a later date at Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery.

James Claspill III, 55, died Oct. 21, 2000.
Born November 28, 1944, he lived in Oceanside most of his life. He lived in Murrieta for the past month. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1985, retiring as 1st sergeant. He was working for the U.S. Postal Service in Vista.
Mr. Claspill was preceded in death by his daughter, Julie Claspill; and brother Stanley. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Margaret Borden Claspill; daughter Lisa Jenkins of Murrieta; son James Claspill IV of Murrieta; brother Patrick Claspill of St. Louis, Mo.; sister Georgia Whitney of St. Louis; and three grandchildren.

VISTA - Abel T. Madrid, 57, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at Tri-City Medical Center.
Born Feb. 5, 1943, in Carlsbad, he lived in Vista for 20 years. He was a warehouseman before becoming disabled in 1982. He was a member of Vista Christian Fellowship Church.
Mr. Madrid is survived by his wife of 30 years, Shirley A. Madrid of Vista; daughter and son-in-law Angie and Michael Day of Vista; brothers and sister-in-law Sammy Guerro of California and Ruben and Toni Madrid and James Vallez, all of Arizona; and grandchildren Brandon Craig and Justin, Jessica and Noah Day.

RANCHO BERNARDO - Josephine Hall "Jo" Esterly, 91, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at his home.
Born July 11, 1909, in Chicago, she lived in Rancho Bernardo for nine years. She did clerical work for General Dynamics/Convair and was a member of Pacific Beach Presbyterian Church. She was named Woman of the Year in 1981 for the San Diego Chapter of the American Business Women's Association.
Mrs. Esterly is survived by her husband of 23 years, Rick Esterly of Rancho Bernardo; son James Tejada of Santa Barbara; daughters Raquel Welch of Berverly Hills and Gayle Tejada Pate of La Jolla; and grandchildren Damon Welch, Tahnee Welch, Ryander Tejada and Adi Tejada.
A family memorial service was held Sunday, Oct. 22.

FALLBROOK - Betty J. Mullinix, 68, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000.
Born Dec. 29, 1931, in Cincinnati, she lived in Fallbrook for 27 years. She graduated from high school and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force,, serving two years in Japan. She worked at KLM Dutch Airlines in Beverly Hills for 14 years.
Ms. Mullinix is survived by her father and stepmother, Dick and Lucie Mullinix of Tallahassee, Fla.; aunt Mary Gardner of Columbus, Md.; and cousin Lucy Gardner of Columbus.

ESCONDIDO - Cleo Virginia Shafer, 78, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000.
Born May 28, 1922, in Sherman, S.D., she lived in Escondido for 36 years. She was a homemaker for 58 years.
Mrs. Shafer was preceded in death by her son, Doyle Shafer. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Robert Earl Shafer of Escondido; daughters Virginia "Ginny" Hedberg of Temecula and Waneen Harman of Escondido; sisters Dona Foster of Sioux Falls, S.D., Joan Nelsen and Mary Smid, both of Spokane, Wash.; brothers Allen Nelsen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Wayne Nelsen of Virginia and Lyle Nelsen of Sioux Falls; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

SOLANA BEACH - Anthony Joseph Scutti, 78, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, in Solana Beach.
Born Aug. 24, 1922, in Philadelphia, he lived in Solana Beach for two years. He was a self-employed Italian foods salesman. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mr. Scutti is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marie Scutti of Solana Beach; sons Gilbert Scutti of Voorhes, N.J., Anthony Scutti of Cypress and Thomas Scutti of Solana Beach; daughter Carol Batezel of San Clemente; sister Gloria Lombardi of Levittown, N.J.; and seven grandchildren.

OCEANSIDE - Glenn C. Hoyt, 78, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at his home.
Born March 31, 1922, in Honolulu, Hawaii, he lived in Oceanside for 21 years. He graduated from Sweetwater High School in Chula Vista and from San Jose State University. He served in the U.S. Navy and worked for IBM in San Jose before retiring. He was chaplain of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association's Oceanside Chapter and a volunteer in the carpentry shop at Mission San Luis Rey for 15 years.
Mr. Hoyt is survived by his wife of 57 years, Bea Hoyt; daughters and son-in-law Pamella Hoyt Butler of Coronado and Paulla DeMello-O'Bannon and Jay O'Bannon of Oceanside; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today, Oct. 26, at Mission San Luis Rey Chapel.

ESCONDIDO - Mayland McFarland Sims, 88, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, in Escondido.
Born May 6, 1912, in Atlanta, he lived in Escondido for five years.
He was an engineer for Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Co. for 38 years before retiring and was a past member of the Kiwanis in Ventura.
He was also a member of the Retired Businessman Association in Ventura.
Mr. Sims was preceded in death by his son, Timothy Sims in 1987.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Harriet E. Sims of Escondido; son Bill Sims of Encinitas; grandchildren Michael Sims of El Cajon and Kathryn Smith of Escondido; and great-grandchild Ezra Sims of El Cajon.

Mr. Palm is survived by his wife of 58 years, Wilhelmina E.
