Alma Kelley, 80

VISTA - Alma Virginia Kelley, 80, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at her home in Vista.

Born Aug. 6, 1919, in Wellsville, Ohio, she lived in Vista for 43 years. She owned Hollyvale Nursery in Vista for 22 years and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mrs. Kelley was preceded in death by hr husband, B. William Kelley, in 1985; and her sister, Marguerite Walsh, in 1998. She is survived by her sons, Martin Kelley of Vista and William B. Kelley of Las Vegas; daughters Virginia Fickle of Vista and Kathleen Cash of Pahrump, Nev.; sister Catherine Griffith of LaVerne; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at noon Thursday, May 4, at Grace Episcopal Church of the Valley in San Marcos, with the Rev. Eric Menees officiating. Inurnment will follow at San Marcos Cemetery.

Lois Stow, 80

VISTA - Lois Elaine Stow, 80, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at Tri-City Medical Center.

Born Feb. 28, 1920, in Saskatchewan, Canada, she lived in Vista for five years. She was the owner/director of a preschool for 15 years and a member of the Women's Republican Party and Faith Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Stow was preceded in death by her husband, William Raymond Stow Jr., in 1997. She is survived by her sons, William R. Stow III of Newport, John Stanley Stow of Chapel Hills, N.C., and Jeffrey Brent Stow of Salem, Ore.; daughter Thea Elaine Chadwick of Vista; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 30, at Faith Lutheran Church, with the Rev. B.D. Droeguemueller officiating. A private cremation is planned.

Robert McCullough, 74

RAMONA - Robert H. McCullough, 74, died Thursday, April 27, at a local convalescent hospital.

Born Nov. 29, 1925, in San Diego, he lived in Ramona for 11 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre in the battle of the Ardennes and was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal. He was an aircraft mechanic at North Island Air Station for 43 years.

Mr. McCullough is survived by his wife, Dimple D. McCullough of Ramona; daughter Susan McCullough of Ramona; brothers Hubert McCullough of Ramona, Roy McCullough of Chula Vista and Frank McCullough of Jamul; and sister Hazel Cope of Sun City.

Viewing will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today, April 29, at Bonham Bros. & Lee Ramona Chapel. A funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, April 30, also at the chapel. A reception will follow at the Ramona VFW Hall on Kelly Street. A private interment will take place at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego.

The family suggests memorial donations to the American Diabetes Association, 225 Broadway, Suite 310, San Diego, CA 92101.

Joseph Provansal, 76

CARLSBAD - Joseph Zozime Provansal, 76, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at Sharp Memorial Hospital.

Born June 17, 1923, in Los Angeles, he lived in Carlsbad for seven years. He was a shop foreman for Bewley Allen Cadillac, retiring in 1992. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

Mr. Provansal is survived by his wife of 55 years, Clarice Provansal of Carlsbad; sons Gary Provansal of Wrightwood and Jerry Provansal of Carlsbad; and five grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 1, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Tina Friesen, 83

SUN CITY - Tina Friesen, 83, died Thursday, April 20, 2000, at Torrance Medical Center.

Born April 29, 1916, in the Netherlands, Holland, she lived in Sun City for 24 years. She was a sales clerk for Nash Department Store in Pasadena for three years. She was a member of the Hillside Social Club in Sun City.

Mrs. Friesen is survived by her brother-in-law, Ben Friesen, of Canada; and second cousin Karoline Snakenborg of Torrance.

A funeral service will beheld at 1 p.m. Monday, May 1, at the United Methodist Church. Burial will take place at Desert Lawn Memorial Park in Calimesa.

Charles Rubacky Sr., 79
SAN DIEGO - Charles James Rubacky Sr., 79, died Friday, April 28, 2000 in San Diego.

Born Feb. 23, 1921, in Pittsburgh, Pa., he lived in Poway.

He worked for the federal government and retired in 1987. He served in Italy during World War II.

Mr. Rubacky is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jan Currie-Rubacky of Poway; sons and daughters-in-law Charles J. Rubacky Jr. and Gayle Rubacky of Poway; daughters and sons-in-law Andrea Patrick of London, England; and Lilyann and Tim Lambert of Elizabeth, Colo.; sisters and brothers-in-law Irene and Joe Berczel of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and grandchildren Danielle and Nicholas Rubacky and Audrey and Jake Lambert.

A memorial will be held today at 1 p.m. at Rancho Bernardo Presbyterian Community Church with Dr. Terrence Sherry officiating.

SCRIPPS RANCH - Edna Frances Dickerson, 92, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Naval Hospital, San Diego.
Born Dec. 21, 1908, in Waukegan, Ill she lived in Scripps Ranch for six years. She was a homemaker for 72 years.
Mrs. Dickerson was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Charles Allen Dickerson, in 1975. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law Gordon Lee and Louine Dickerson of Escondido; daughters and sons-in-law Sandra and Duane Eberlein of Spring Valley and Cherie Lynn and Richard Willnard of Bellevue of Neb.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and funeral service at 1 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, at Poway Bernardo Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Phil Berry officiating. Interment icon will follow at Dearborn Memorial Park.

Beatrice Fair, 80
OCEANSIDE - Beatrice "Bea" M. Fair, 80, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Tri-City Medical Center of complications from pneumonia.
Born Sept. 4, 1920, in Philadelphia, she lived in Oceanside for 40 years. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary Star of Sea Catholic Church.
Mrs. Fair was preceded in death by her son, Joseph E. Fair Jr., on Dec. 17, 1972. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Joseph E. Fair Sr., of Oceanside; sons Robert Fair of Hawaii and David Fair of Willits; daughters Marilyn Nickerson of Valley Center, Marianne Thomas of Vista, Michaela Rodriguez and Christine Coco, both of Oceanside; daughter-in-law Dorothea Fair of Willits; sons-in-law Alex Rodriguez and Sam Coco, both of Oceanside; grandchildren Anthony Fair, Rachael Smith, Daniel Thomas, Mary Alvarez, Sonia and Bobby Nickerson, April Ibanez, Jerad, David Jr., and Breman Fair, Sara Watson, Michael Coco, Danya, Collin, Jordon and Indigo Fair; and great-grandchildren Brandi Nickerson Tara and Joey Anderson, Jacqueline and Stephanie Alvarez, Hayley Watson and Leo Fair.
Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. with rosary recited at 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 2, at Oceanside Mortuary. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Interment icon will follow at Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery.

James Fry, 77
OCEANSIDE - James H. Fry, 77, died Thursday, March 29, 2001.
Born Jan. 27, 1924, in Baraboo, Wis., he lived in Oceanside. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1971 after serving 23 years. He served during World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War. He retired as a gunnery sergeant. He was a member of Elks Lodge of Oceanside, San Diego Zoological Society, MATCA, Oceanside Jaycees, the Naval Reserve and Oceanside Historical Society. He was an employee of Eternal Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary.
Mr. Fry is survived by his wife, Margaret Fry of Oceanside; son and daughter-in-law Michael and Phyllis Fry of Oceanside; daughters and son-in-law Kathleen and Frank Purpura of New Jersey and Donna Farside of Nevada; sister Darryl Ballew of Wisconsin; grandchildren Alicia and Christopher Purpura, Eric and Jeffrey Spurlock, Regina and Melanie Fry, Melissia Northrup and Jeremy, Joshua and Justin Luke; and great-grandchildren Alfonso Jiminez, Jessie, James and Jazmyne Ortiz, Savanaha Lopez and Elysia Northrup.
Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 2, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, at Eternal Hills Mortuary with the Revs. David Plank and Richard Miller officiating. Interment icon will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Norma J. (Phillips) Thorworth
ESCONDIDO - Norma Jean Thorworth, died Thursday, March 29, 2001.
Born March 17, 1938, in Denver, she lived in Escondido since 1955.
She was president of Collins-Phillips Tool Corp. and Harold Phillips Corp. She started the San Diego County Chapter of M.A.D.D. (Mother's Against Drunk Driving). after her beloved son, Dean was killed by a drunk driver in 1981. She became the first national president of M.A.D.D. and served from 1985 to 1988. She was a life member of Country Friends.
Mrs. Thorworth was preceded in death by her father and mother, Norman and Mary Collins.
She is survived by husband Fred C. Thorworth; mother-in-law Martha Thorworth; son Harold Phillips Jr.; son Allen Phillips, known as "Meme" to her grandchildren. Leah, Sarah and Chloe, all of Escondido; nephew Garrett Collins of San Marcos; brother-in-law John Thorworth; uncle and aunt Dan and Virginia Fantoni of Escondido; aunt and uncle Dr. Helen and Donald Williamson of Connecticut.
Visitation is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, with service following at El Camino Memorial Chapel and interment following at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego.

Winifred Fahey, 82
EL CAJON - Winifred Marie Kleinman Fahey, 82, died Sunday, March 25.
Mrs. Fahey was born in Kansas City, Mo., and lived in Encinitas for 20 years.
Mrs. Fahey was preceded in death by her parents William Ferdinand Kleinman and Mary Veronica Altwies; brothers Joseph Anthony, Edwin Paul, William Ferdinand Jr., John Francis, Albert Theodore and James Richard; sisters Frances Genevieve and Mary Margaret; and her husband Richard Joseph Fahey. She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Eileen Martin of Poway, Maureen Fahey and Louis Pierro of Milton, Mass., and Margaret and Vern Hamilton of Arlington, Va.; grandchildren Marie, Joseph, and Catherine; and great-grandsons Aaron and Erik.
A Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, March 28, at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Oceanside followed by interment at Eternal Hills Memorial Park in Oceanside.

Raechel Marketto, 16

FALLBROOK - Raechel Ann Marketto, 16, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego.
Born Feb. 4, 1985, in Jacksonville, N.C., she lived in Fallbrook for 12 years. She was a student and in Mrs. Everman's Tae Kwon Do Ata class.
Ms. Marketto is survived by her mother, Cynthia A. Haughtelin of San Diego; father Steven M. Marketto of Fallbrook; step-mother Carolyn Marketto of Fallbrook; grandmother Oma Marketto of Vineland, N.J.; great-grandparents Alma and Paul Coover of Lakeview, Ore.; brothers Chad Dawson of Fallbrook, Jeremy Marketto of Irvine and Kevin Marketto of Fallbrook; and sisters Rebecca Marketto of Escondido and Jennifer Dawson of Fallbrook.
Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. today, April 3, at Berry-Bell & Hall Chapel. A graveside service is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, at Riverside National Cemetery with the Rev. Demel of Zion Lutheran Church officiating.

Richard Felker Sr., 68

FALLBROOK - Richard G. Felker Sr., 68, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at his home.
Born May 6, 1932, in Bakersfield, he lived in Fallbrook for 28 years. He was a pilot with American Airlines and retired on May 6, 1992. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and served in the National Guard. He was an amateur ham radio operator.
Mr. Felker was preceded in death by his father, Warren G. Felker. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Marilyn Felker of Fallbrook; mother Madelyn of Orange; son Richard Jr., of Alabama; daughters and son-in-law Lisa and Steve Minniear of Burton, Mich., Denise Erickson of Roseburg, Ore.; stepdaughter and husband Brandi and Guy Cordova of Brownsville, Ore.; grandchildren Shannan, Angela, Amber, Tanya, Jennifer, Amanda, Jasper, Ryan, Jessica and Paul; and great-grandchild Devin.
Visitation was held on March 27, at Berry-Bell & Hall Chapel. A graveside service was held on March 28, at Fallbrook Masonic Cemetery with the Rev. Don Starkey officiating. Burial is at Fallbrook Masonic Cemetery.

Born June 26, 1915, in Sutton, Neb., she lived in Vista for six years. She was a beautician and enjoyed gardening, dancing and birds.
Mrs. Balma was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Balma, on April 6, 1990. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Larry and Louise Balma of Oceanside; and grandchild Laune Balma Shoman.
A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, at Eternal Hills Mortuary Chapel with Dr. Richard L. Miller officiating. Interment icon will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Born Nov. 18, 1940, in Alameda, he lived in Escondido for seven years. He was a Realtor for Coldwell Banker and a past lieutenant governor for the Optimist Club. He was a member of "Just Say No," Valley Center, Planning Group, AG Board for San Diego, and California Association of Realtors.
Mr. Knust is survived by his longtime companion Kathy Owen of Escondido; mother Margaret Knust of Sacramento; father Harry Knust of Sacramento; sons Charles M. Knust of Valley Center and Andrew R. Knust of Chicago; brother Thomas Knust of Glendora; and sister Gail Temple of Benicia.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, April 7, at Valley Center Community Hall.

Born Jan. 23, 1947, in San Francisco, she lived in San Diego for 29 years. She was a homemaker for 30 years. She enjoyed animals, dancing, music, and arts and crafts.
Mrs. Miner is survived by her husband of 30 years, Lewis B. Miner, of San Diego; sons Matthew L. Miner of Escondido and Jason L. Miner of San Diego; daughters Jennifer Lines of Mesa, Ariz., Melissa Miner of Rexburg, Idaho and Emily Miner of San Diego; and granddaughter Kaitlyn J. Lines.
Visitation is scheduled for 9 a.m. and funeral at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 5, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in San Diego; Interment icon will follow at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego.

Joseph Miller, 98
FALLBROOK - Joseph Gurdon Miller, 98, died Thursday, March 29, 2001.
Born Feb. 1, 1903, in Pasadena, he lived in Fallbrook for 22 years. He retired as chief of police from the San Marino Police Department after 22 years on the force.
Mr. Miller is survived by his wife of 22 years, Maudie L. Miller of Fallbrook; son Robert Miller of Desert Green; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held Saturday, March 31, at Berry-Bell & Hall Fallbrook Mortuary. Other services are pending. A private cremation is planned.

Gordon Whitcomb, 76
RAMONA - Gordon D. "Moose" Whitcomb, 76, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at his home.
Born June 21, 1924, in St. Paul, Minn., he lived in Ramona for more than 40 years. He owned and operated Roy Minor's Paint & Body Shop in downtown San Diego for three decades before retiring in 1980. He was a member of Emmanuel Faith Community Church in Escondido.
Mr. Whitcomb is survived by his wife of 33 years, Ellie; sons Gary, Gordon, Dennis, Gus and Paul; daughters Adrienne, Sharon and Linda; brothers Lyman, Vernon and David; sister Venita; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
At the request of deceased, no services are planned.
The family suggests memorial donations to the Ramona Cancer Resource Center, 1516 Main St., Suite 107-A4, Ramona, CA 92065.

John Scheifele,71
VISTA - John "Jack" F. Scheifele, 71, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at his home of cancer.
Born July 16, 1929, in Oneida, N.Y., he lived in Vista for 11 years. He was an insurance salesman and Real Estate salesman, retiring on July 6, 1998. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant during the Korean War from 1951 to 1956. He was a member of the Vista Tennis Club.
Mr. Scheifele was preceded in death by his son, Steven Scheifele on Sept. 21, 1998. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Barbara Scheifele of Vista; son Bob Scheifele of Rancho Santa Margarita; brother Harry J. Scheifele of Poway; and grandchildren Kelli and Will.
Funeral services will be announced at a later date. Inurnment will be at Fort Rosecrans in San Diego. A private cremation is planned.
The family suggests memorial donations to Elizabeth Hospice, 150 W. Crest St., Escondido, CA 92025.
