ESCONDIDO - Ferne "Herbie" Herber Olsen, 82, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at her home of lung cancer.
Born Aug. 10, 1918, in Rapid City, S.D., she lived in Escondido for 22 years. She graduated valedictorian from Custer High School in Custer, S.D. and attended secretarial school in Denver, Colo. She was a homemaker and enjoyed swimming, golfing and the piano. She was a member of Champaign Village Chorus, Bridge Club, Tennis Club, Birthday Club and Eagle Bowling.
Mrs. Olsen was preceded in death by her sister, Maxine Herber Brandborg, in 1983, husband J. Grant Robertson, in 1993, and husband William C. Olsen, in 2000. She is survived by son Gary G. Robertson of Boulder, Colo.; daughter and son-in-law Gail and Dennis Hull of Escondido; brother and sister-in-law Harrison G. and Rose Marie Herber of Custer, S.D.; grandchildren Lori L. Roth of Simi Valley and Michael D. Hull of Escondido; one great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private services are planned with her cremains scattered.
The family suggests memorial donations to The Elizabeth Hospice, 150 W. Crest St., Escondido, CA 92025.

Letitia May, 89
POWAY - Letitia Eastham May, 89, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at her home of Parkinson's disease.
Born May 31, 1911, in Argillite, Greenup County, Ky., she lived in Poway for 31 years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. May was preceded in death by her husband, David May, in 1997.
She is survived by son David May Jr., of Poway; daughters and son-in-law Letitia Stockton of Spring Valley and Carol and Raymond Ruiz of San Diego; sister and brother-in-law Drussie and Egbert Hartley of South Charleston, W. Va.; five grandchildren; and 18 grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12, at Eternal Hills Mortuary with the Rev. David Plank officiating. Interment icon will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

SAN DIEGO - Norman L. Franz Sr., 97, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.
Born Oct. 21, 1903, in Lamar, Colo., he lived in San Diego for 35 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a retired mortgage and loan broker.
Mr. Franz is survived by his son Norman L. Franz Jr., of Reno, Nev.

Elma Blakeman, 89
ESCONDIDO - Elma Louise Blakeman, 89, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at her home.
Born April 27, 1911, in Hennessey, Okla., she lived in Escondido for 26 years.
She was a salesperson for Singer Sewing Machine Co. for 10 years. She was a member of Emmanuel Faith Community Church.
Mrs. Blakeman was preceded in death by her husband Carl Cray, in 1979, and husband Bud Blakeman, in 1989.
She is survived by daughter E. Lee Hanna of Ramona; grandchildren Kip Johnson, Kim Rabago and Ronda Fiello; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at Emmanuel Faith Community Church with the Revs. Richard Williams and Dr. Alan Pickering of Elizabeth Hospice officiating.
Interment will be at 11 a.m. at Oak Hill Memorial Park with Pickering officiating.

Charles Andersen, 89
Charles E. Andersen, 89, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at Tri-City Hospital of a heart attack.
He was born on Jan. 4, 1912 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of King of King Lutheran Church.
Mr. Andersen was preceded in death by his daughter, Laure Lee Andersen on March 26, 1959. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Clarine Andersen of Oceanside; brothers Earl Andersen of Laguna Hills and Howard Andersen of Torrance; and brothers-in-law Mervin Johnson of Stac City, Iowa and Robert Johnson of Stromsburg, Neb.
Visitation is scheduled from 2 to 6 p.m. today, April 10, at Eternal Hills Mortuary.
A graveside service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Joseph Lubitz, 84
DEL MAR - Joseph Abraham Lubitz, Ph.D. 84, died Sunday, April 1, 2001.
Born Feb. 24, 1917, in New Haven, Conn., he worked at Pharmacist Food Technology. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of American Chemical Society and a charter member of Institute of Food Technology.
Mr. Lubitz is survived by his wife of 61 years, Annette Lubitz of Del Mar; sons and daughters-in-law James and Rosa Lubitz of Columbia, Md.; Paul and Diana Lubitz of Arcata, and Michael Lubitz of Austin, Texas; daughter and son-in-law Susan and Peter Gamble of Philadelphia; and grandchildren Tala, Aaron, Rebecca, Robert and Nicholas.
A private family service is planned with a private cremation.

OCEANSIDE - Jerry Ray Sparrow, 62, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at Tri-City Medical Center.
Born Feb. 1, 1939, in Indiana, he lived in Oceanside for 24 years.
He worked for Southern California Edison Co. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and retired as a gunnery sergeant. He was a decorated Vietnam War veteran.
Mr. Sparrow was preceded in death by his father, Raymond V. Sparrow on Sept. 29, 1990, and brother David Sparrow on Feb. 20, 1992.
He is survived by his wife, Sei S. Sparrow of Oceanside; mother Nellie Mae Sparrow of Evansville, Ind.; daughters and sons-in-law Nancy and Robert Epperson of Gainesville, Ga., and Robin and Christopher Ballew of Phoenix; sisters and brothers-in-law Linda and Robert Johnson of Evansville, Ind., and Peggy and Mike Bishop of Evansville, Ind.; grandchildren Rushele, Nicholas, Cristoll and Hayden.

POWAY - Gene Allen Barnett, 75, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla.
Born Nov. 19, 1925, in Pontiac, Mich., he lived in Poway for 21 years.
He was a retired lieutenant commander of the U.S. Navy, having served for 25 years. He served in civil service and retired after 20 years.
Mr. Barnett was preceded in death by his son, Randy J. Barnett, on Aug. 26, 1988.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary L. Barnett of Poway; daughter Vicki L. Meyers of San Diego; brother and sister-in-law Dewight and Lil Barnett of Waterford, Mich.; sister and brother-in-law Joice and Karl Franklin of Duncanville, Texas; and grandchildren Sara and Carrie Barnett.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at Poway Bernardo Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Barry Click officiating.

OCEANSIDE - Ricardo Moreno, 90, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at his home.
Born Jan. 17, 1911, in Veracruz, Mexico, he lived in Oceanside for 15 years.
He was the owner of Food Factory and retired in 1981.
He was a member of St. Francis Church and Guadalupanos.
Mr. Moreno is survived by his wife of 53 years, Amanda Moreno of Oceanside; daughters Mercedes Moreno of Oceanside, Sofia Fernandez of Chula Vista, Antonieta Bravo of Austin, Texas and Veronica Moreno of Del Mar; grandchildren Jennifer Robinson, Sofia Fernandez and Amanda St. Martin; and four great-grandchildren.
A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today, April 10, at St. Francis Church in Vista.

FALLBROOK - Gladys Lucile Myer, 82, died Friday, April 6, 2001.
Born Aug. 27, 1918, in East St. Louis, Ill., she lived in Fallbrook for 23 years.
She retired after 17 years as a secretary for Los Angeles Harbor College. She was a member of the Fallbrook Presbyterian Church, Fallbrook's Woman's Club, the Women's Christian Association; Fallbrook Hospital Auxiliary and the Fallbrook Newcomer's Club.
Mrs. Myer is survived by her husband of 62 years, Jack L. Myer of Fallbrook; son Richard L. Myer of Seal Beach, daughter Judy A. Crandall of Lake Forest; brother Jack Burroughs of Wildomar; five grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, at Fallbrook Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jerome Marroquin officiating. Burial will be at Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood.

RAMONA - Myrtle May Tripp Schroeder, 72, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at her home of complications from emphysema.
Born Feb. 23, 1929, in Grand Haven, Mich., she lived in Ramona for 12 years.
She was a member of the Ramona Lutheran Church, serving on the altar guild, as a Sunday school teacher, in the nursery and in Bible class.
She led a carnation creation group in both Palm Springs and Ramona, making Kleenex carnations. She enjoyed sewing, painting, cross stitching and ceramics.
Mrs. Schroeder is survived by her husband of 53 years, Robert H. Schroeder of Ramona; son Duane R. Schroeder of Grand Haven, Mich.; daughters Laverna K. Karrfalt of Lafayette, Ind., Krisanne M. Leczel of Rochester Hills, Mich., and Thonda L. Gold of Chandler, Ariz.; brother Louis E. Tripp of Grand Haven; sister Letta I. Dobson of Grand Haven; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at the Ramona Lutheran Church with the Rev. Warren Naegele officiating. A luncheon will follow at the church.
Burial will be at Pine Ridge Cemetery in Grand Haven.

She had worked as an air assembler for Convair Astronautics. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Givens is survived by her daughter, Janiece Vice of San Marcos; brothers Les, Leo and Ralph Swaim; five grandchildren; and eight grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today, April 10, at El Camino Memorial Park.

VISTA - Maria Tarango, 52, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at her home.
Born Nov. 6, 1948, in the Philippines, she lived in Vista.
Mrs. Tarango is survived by her husband of 13 years, Gabriel Tarango Jr., of Vista; mother Gregoria Adlawan of Oceanside; sons and daughter-in-law Randy Adlawan and Redelia Abad Apadilla of Oceanside and Thomas Adlawan Tarango of Vista; daughter and son-in-law Sondra Nadine Glover and Trevandra Sherrell Waller of Oceanside; and grandchildren Anthony Abad Adlawan and Destiny Adlawan.

FALLBROOK - George B. Hoekstra, 68, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at Palomar Medical Center of leukemia.
Born Dec. 15, 1932, in Battle Creek, Mich., he lived in Fallbrook for 13 years. He retired from United Air Lines in 1988. He served in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Hoekstra was preceded in death by his parents Lucille and Harold Hoekstra.
He is survived by his companion, Barbara Hoekstra of Vicksburg, Mich.; sons and daughters-in-law Todd and Shannon Hoekstra of Huntington Beach and Jeff and Anita Hoekstra of Carlsbad; daughter and son-in-law Wendy and Mark Graham of Spokane, Wash.; brothers and sisters-in-law Thayer and Jean Hoekstra of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Robert and Kay Hoekstra of Bella Vista, Ariz.; and grandchildren David Graham, Daniel Graham, Laurel Graham, Henry Hoekstra, Jack Hoekstra and Olivia Hoekstra.

Mr. Caugherty is survived by his wife, Jane Caugherty, of Sun City; and daughters Janice Brown of Santa Ynez and Patricia Von Zidkow of Huntington Beach.

BONSALL - Gaylord Gordon Goble, 80, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla.
Born Aug. 1, 1920, in Flagstaff, Ariz., he lived in Bonsall. He attended USC and graduated from USC School of Dentistry in 1945. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.
He was an ensign in the U.S. Navy, aboard the Point Cruz aircraft carrier.
He retired in 1981 from his dental practice in Beverly Hills. He served as a board member of BARC and was a local citrus and avocado rancher.
Mr. Goble was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Edna Mae Goble, in 1991, and his daughter Gayle Lynn Cooper, in 1993.
He is survived by sons and daughter-in-law Rex M. Goble of Bonsall and Richard G. and Madelyn Goble of Fallbrook; brother and sister-in-law William and Sherryl Goble of Mesa, Ariz.; nieces Gay Lyn Gunning of Renton, Wash., Debbie Heddlesten of Carnegie, Okla., and Katie Lankford of Surprise, Ariz.; and grandchildren Kirsten and Amanda Goble of Bangor, Maine, and Carolyn, Gregory and Jessica Goble, all of Fallbrook.
A private cremation and memorial is planned.

SAN MARCOS - Donald Henry Surwall, 63, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at his home.
Born Sept. 22, 1937, in Chicago, he lived in San Marcos for two years. He was a building contractor for 15 years.
Mr. Surwall is survived by his wife of 43 years, Patricia A. Surwall of San Marcos; son and daughter-in-law Jeffrey D. and Paula Surwall of Carlsbad; daughter and son-in-law Pam and Beaver Theodosakis of Carlsbad; sisters and brothers-in-law Joyce and Pete Petersen of Spring Grove, Ill., and Janice and Dennis Browder of Evansville, Ind.; and grandchildren Paris and Pearl Theodosakis and Jeffrey Taylor Surwall, all of Carlsbad.
Visitation was held Tuesday, April 10, at Allen Bros. Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. today, April 11, at Mission San Luis Rey with the Rev. Theodore Phillips officiating. Interment icon will follow at Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery.

J. Haskell, 88
VISTA - J. ³Scotty² Haskell, 88, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, from complications from Alzheimer¹s disease.
Born June 4, 1912, in Alhambra, he worked for the Mobil Oil Co. until his retirement in 1978. He moved to Oceanside in 1978, where he lived at the Lamplighter Mobile Home Park until 1996.
Mr. Haskell was preceded in death by his wife, Marion Haskell, in 1996.
He is survived by sons William S. Haskell of Vista and David E. Haskell of Orangedale; daughter Helen L. Molles of Seal Beach; grandchildren, Brian and Krystal Molles of La Jolla, Rhyss Haskell of Orangedale; and great-grandchild Briane Molles of La Jolla.
A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at the First United Methodist Church of Seal Beach. A reception will be held after the services.
A private cremation and interment will take place.

Born March 24, 1918, in White Flat, Texas, he lived in Oceanside for nine years. He retired in 1980 from Lucky Stores Inc. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mr. Amick is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jewell Amick of Oceanside; sons and daughters-in-law John and Bonnie Amick of Oceanside and Ron and Asta Amick of Poway; brothers Elmer Amick of Ontario, Clyde Amick of San Diego and Wiley Amick of Hemet; sisters Edna, Valda, and Ophelia; and grandchildren Heather, Ben and Lauren; and greatgrandchildren Jacob and Dylon.
