Memorial
Paul Norman Franklin Sr.
Beloved husband, father and grandfather, Paul Norman Franklin Sr., 72, of Gig Harbor, Wash., died Wednesday, April 4, 2001.
Paul was born Aug. 27, 1928, in Neosho County, Kan., the only child of Loys V. Franklin and Mildred Marie Witsell. In 1941, the family moved to San Diego, where Paul graduated from Grossmont High School.
During World War II, Paul served in the U.S. Navy with the with the underwater demolition team, the precursor to the Navy Seals, and was honorably discharged in 1947. Paul attended night classes at Palomar and Mira Costa Colleges to receive degrees in criminal justice and police science. He attended Cabrillo Pacific University where he received a law degree. He even had time to play the catcher's position on a minor A-league ball team.
In April 1954, Paul began his lengthy career in law enforcement with the San Diego Sheriff's Department. Paul rose to the rank of lieutenant and served as head of narcotics investigation and captain of the SWAT team. He received numerous commendations for his service.
Education was very important to Paul and throughout his career, he earned many certifications, including graduating from the 106th session of the FBI Academy in September 1976. Paul also taught police science at Palomar and Mira Costa College.
Paul retired from the Sheriff's Department in 1979, and moved his family to McCall, Idaho where he lived for ten years. While in Idaho, Paul owned a construction company and was a Real Estate broker.
In 1989, Paul moved his family to Gig Harbor where he went back to doing what he loved best - law enforcement. Paul ended his distinguished career with the U.S. Marshall Service in Tacoma, Wash., and only left when he was forced to retire at age 70. After retiring, Paul began building his final home which he completed in November 1999.
Paul enjoyed his many trips to the Palm Springs area, but when at home loved playing guitar, doing crossword puzzles, puttering in his garden, but mostly loved spending time with his family, especially his two new granddaughters, both born in 2000.
For the last year, Paul battled and beat lung cancer. He underwent radiation, chemotherapy and the removal of one lung, and had recently received the word that he was cancer free. Throughout the recovery process, Paul faced each day with his typical humor and confidence, with a bit of orneriness thrown in. He was sure he would beat the cancer, and he did. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to him, his family or his physicians, his one remaining lung was damaged by emphysema and could not sustain him.
Paul is survived by Kathleen, his wife of 35 years; his son Randy of Poway; Randy's daughters, Jessica and Rachel of Amherst, Mass.; his son Dan of Vista; his son Paul Jr.; his wife Tammy, and their daughter Abigail of Issaquah, Wash.; and his daughter Michelle, her husband, Aaron Wilson; and their daughter, Veronica, of Gig Harbor, Wash.
A viewing was held at Haven of Rest Funeral Home in Gig Harbor, Wash., on Sunday April 8 from 3 to 5 p.m. Paul was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church and a memorial Mass was held there on Monday, April 9, at 11 a.m.
Remembrances may be made to the American Lung Association, 2750 Fourth Ave., San Diego, CA 92103 or the American Cancer Society, 2655 Camino Del Rio N., Suite 100, San Diego, CA 92108.
