William Engelhardt, 74
RAMONA - William D. Engelhardt, 74, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001 at his home.
Born Sept. 5, 1926, in Bancroft, Neb., he lived in Ramona for three years. He was a tool and die maker for Solar Turbines in San Diego and served in the U.S. Air Force at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas. He was a member of the Ramona Lutheran Church and enjoyed gardening and working on cars.
Mr. Engelhardt is survived by his sons Brian and Brad Engelhardt; daughter Debbie Blais, all of San Diego; sister Fern Nolting of Columbus, Ind.; and grandchildren Jeffrey and Ryan Blais and Sarah and Nathan Engelhardt.
A memorial service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Sunday, April 22, at the Ramona Lutheran Church with the Rev. Warren Naegele officiating. Further services and burial will be held at the Bancroft Cemetery in Bancroft, Neb. with military honors given.

Thomas Rush, 65
RANCHO BERNARDO - Thomas 'Tom' J. Rush, 65, died Monday, April 16, 2001, at his home of heart failure.
Born July 14, 1935, in Chicago, he lived in Rancho Bernardo for nine years. He worked in sales for 43 years. He served in the U.S. Army for two years and was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 17 years. He enjoyed woodworking.
Mr. Rush is survived by his wife of 44 years, Barbara Rush of Rancho Bernardo; daughters Pamela Ann Rush of Frankfort, Germany, Rebecca Lynn Boyd of San Diego, Cynthia Jean Keech of San Diego and Sandra Lee Rush of Escondido; brothers Robert Rush of New York and Richard Rush of Chicago; sisters Marion McGurk of Chicago and Patsy Mueller of Chicago; and seven grandchildren.
Visitation was held from 5 to 6 p.m. with a memorial service at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, at Poway Bernardo Mortuary with the Rev. William Mooney of St. Michaelís Catholic Church in Poway officiating. A private cremation and inurnment is planned.

Anita Flores, 60
VISTA - Anita Cecilia Quintanar Flores, 60, died Friday, April 13, 2001, at her home.
She was born Nov. 24, 1940, in Vista and was a retired nanny.
Mrs. Flores was preceded in death by her brother, Ernesto Quintanar II, in 1999, father Ernesto Quintanar, in 1995 and mother Otila Mercado Quintanar, in 1975. She is survived by daughters and son-in-law Margie and Daniel Dambach and Lisa Flores; son Art Flores Jr.; sister and brother-in-law Andrea and Carroll Russell; sister-in-law Connie Quintanar; grandchildren Robert Hernandez, Amanda Dambach and Kyle Dambach; and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday, April 20, at St. Francis Church.

OCEANSIDE - Melvin Cross, 68, died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at his home of lung illness.
Born Feb. 3, 1933, in Oklahoma, he lived in Oceanside for 54 years. He worked for Crystal Silica Sand Co. and served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Church of Christ.
Mr. Cross is survived by his parents, Melvina and Edgar Cross; sons Preston Cross of San Marcos and Guy Cross; stepsons Randy Painter of Nowata, Okla., and Howard Painter; stepdaughter Robin Savala of Nowata, Okla., brother and sister-in-law Bill and Nancy Cross of Vista; sisters and brothers-in-law Betty and Don Brown of Kerman, Dolores and George Bartolovic of Oceanside and Diane and Fred Shearer of San Marcos; and step-granddaughter Lela Epple.

ESCONDIDO - Philip 'Phil' Arena, 68, died Sunday, April 15, 2001.
Born June 17, 1932, in Cliffton, N.J., he lived in Escondido for 57 years. He worked for the Humane Society and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a graduate of Escondido High School.
Mr. Arena is survived by his mother Concetta 'Connie' Arena of Escondido; brother Joseph 'Joe' Arena of Escondido and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A graveside with full military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 20, at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

SAN MARCOS - Violet Vivian Clinton, 73, died Monday, April 16, 2001, in Escondido.
Born April 14, 1928, in New York City, she lived in San Marcos for 15 years. She was a homemaker for 42 years. She was a member of St. Markís Catholic Church and a 13-year member of Ladies Auxiliary Fleet Reserve Association.
Mrs. Clinton is survived by her husband of 42 years, Ray Clinton, of San Marcos; daughters and sons-in-law Debora Clinton Calaghan and Patrick Calaghan of Vestal, N.Y., and Diane M. and Ross Byrd of Murrieta; and sister Charlene Hall-Smith of Alexandria, Va.
A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today, April 19, at St. Markís Catholic Church with the Rev. George Dunkley officiating. Burial is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, April 23, at Forest Hills Cemetery in Boston.

SANTA YSABEL - Thomas 'Tom' E. Osuna, 42, died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at his home.
Born July 29, 1958, in Escondido, he was a lifelong resident of the Santa Ysabel Indian Reservation. He had been employed as a laborer. He loved the mountains and back country.
Mr. Osuna is survived by his sons Thomas and Johnny Osuna; daughter Bibiana Osuna, all of Santa Ysabel; father Joseph Osuna of Santa Ysabel; mother Josephine Royer of Pinion Pines; brother David Osuna of Santa Ysabel; sister Erin Royer of Pinion Pines; fiance Bettina Paipa of Santa Ysabel; grandchildren Bianca Blanco, Juanita Blanco and Fallon Martha Osuna; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

ESCONDIDO - Mary Evalyn Hurley, 90, died Sunday, April 15, 2001.
Born Dec. 7, 1910, in Denver, she lived in Escondido for six years. She retired from Pacific Telephone in 1945. She was a member of Legion of Mary and Meals on Wheels.
Mrs. Hurley was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Hurley, in August 1990. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law F. Timothy Hurley and Doug Bhingas of Escondido and Joseph and Denise Hurley of Perkinsville, Vt.; daughter and son-in-law Michael P. and Robin Russo of Escondido; and grandchildren Andrea and Stephen Russo and Katie and Emily Hurley.

RANCHO BERNARDO - Charles Henry Rabbini, 90, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at his home.
Born Oct. 7, 1910, in Southborough, Mass., he lived in Rancho Bernardo for 45 years. He retired after 20 years as a chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor and a member of Fleet Reserve, Poway Branch.
Mr. Rabbini is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ida A. Rabbini of Rancho Bernardo; nephews John Rabeni of Annapolis, Md., Charles Rabeni of Columbia and Anthony Botelho of Marysville, Wash.; nieces Linda Pietrasiak of Fayville, Mass., and Donna Wittouck of San Diego; sister-in-law Gena Botelho of San Diego; and brother-in-law Aldo Tombari of Humble, Texas.
A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, April 20, at St. Michaelís Catholic Church in Poway, with the Rev. William Mooney officiating. Burial will take place in Southborough, Mass.

FALLBROOK - Corinne B. Anderson, 84, died Monday, April 16, 2001, in Carlsbad.
Born April 2, 1917, in Newark, N.J., she lived in Fallbrook for 24 years. She was a self-employed interior designer. She is in the 'Whoís Who in Interior Design í92-í93.' She was a member of Fallbrook PEO Chapter UH, Soroptomist, Questers and Fallbrook Music Society. She was a supporter of the visual and performing arts.
Mrs. Anderson was preceded in death by her husband, Carl A. Anderson Jr., of Carlsbad, in October 1997. She is survived by son, Carl A. Anderson III and daughter-in-law Mary E. Anderson of Carlsbad; grandchildren Carl A. Anderson IV and Andrew W. Anderson; and one great-granddaughter.
A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, April 20, at Fallbrook Presbyterian Church.

VISTA - Matthew Lewis 'Lew' Brockmeyer, 73, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, of complication of diabetes.
Born Dec. 19, 1927, in Baltimore, he was a finance director for Fluor Corp. and retired in 1993.
He was a 32nd degree Mason and past Master of the Coral Lodge 142 in Okinawa, Japan. He was a member of the American Legion, 8th Air Force Historical Society, Second Air Division Association and the B-24 Liberator Club.
Mr. Brockmeyer is survived by his wife, Beverly; son Steven; stepsons Kevin and Kelly Davis; daughter Joan; stepdaughters Laurie Popp and Dana Patterson; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A Mass and memorial service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 20, 2001, at St. Francis of Assisi Church.

Born June 28, 1916, in Lowell, Mass., she lived in Carlsbad for 18 years. She was a retired unemployment compensation department principal interviewer.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband of 59 years, James A. Smith of Carlsbad; son James A. Smith Jr., of Ashville, N.C.; daughter and son-in-law Sherry and Richard Wheeler of Carlsbad; sister Eileen McDonough of Dracut, Mass.; and grandchildren Tyler Wheeler of Carlsbad and Chelsea Smith of Cleveland, Ohio.

Fred Morey, 82
CARLSBAD - Fred J. Morey, 82, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at his home in La Costa.
Mr. Morey served as San Diego Countyís chief administrative officer from 1968 to 1973. He was vice president of La Costa Land Development from 1973 to 1980. He was general manager of La Costa Cable TV until 1986.
He was a graduate of University of Southern California in 1940 with a political science degree and did graduate work in public administration.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. He was a former vice president of finance for the United Way of San Diego.
Mr. Morey is survived by his wife, Mary and four children.
Private services at home are planned.
Lloyd Preston, 80
SAN MARCOS - Lloyd M. Preston, 80, died Friday, April 13, 2001, at Tri-City Medical Center of natural causes.
Born May 19, 1920, in Detroit, he lived in San Marcos for 26 years. He was the owner of Barleys Market in Escondido and retired in 1996. He was a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Mr. Preston was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie F. Preston, in 1998. He is survived by daughters Nancy E. Humphrey of San Marcos and Charlotte A. Zigler of Oceanside; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
No services will be held at the request of the deceased. A private cremation is planned.
