SAN MARCOS - Paul Abraham Marchewka, 84, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Life Care Center in Escondido.
Born Aug. 18, 1915, in Flint, Mich., he lived in San Marcos for 13 years. He was the owner/operator of Grosse Point Laundry for 27 years.
Mr. Marchewka is survived by his wife of 61 years, Eleanor H. Marchewka of San Marcos; sons Paul Marchewka of Vista, Alan Marchewka of Lakewood and Stephen Marchewka of Desert Hot Springs; brother James Marchewka of Jackson, Mich.; sister Patricia Kinnard of Hubbard Lake, Mich.; grandchildren Marnie Gallup, Stacy and Todd Marchewka, Marla Osterman, Karry Gill, Lynn Sirr and Nicholas and Caitlin Marchewka; and two great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 18, at St. Mark's Catholic Church in San Marcos. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 18, at the church. Interment icon will follow at San Marcos Cemetery.

Gladys Lyon
OCEANSIDE - Gladys Wilma Lyon died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at her home.
Born in Grand Island, Neb., she lived in Oceanside for 17 years. She was a homemaker and a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Oceanside and the Assembly of God Church in Vista.
Mrs. Lyon was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Anthony Lyon, in 1991. She is survived by her sons, John M. Lyon of Vista and Robert T. Lyon of Fountain Valley; sisters Marian Jane Petersen of Scotts Bluff, Neb., and Frances Nichelson of Littleton, Colo.
Visitation will be held at the time of the service. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, at Allen Brothers Mortuary, Vista Chapel, with the Rev. Claire Rose officiating. A private burial will take place at Riverside National Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial donations to Hospice of the North Coast, 5421 Avenida Encino, Suite N, Carlsbad, CA 92008.

Marie Quinn, 79
ESCONDIDO - Marie Jane Quinn, 79, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at a local hospital.
Born March 22, 1921, in San Francisco, she lived in Escondido for 13 years. She was a homemaker for 57 years and attended the College of the Pacific in Stockton and UCLA.
Mrs. Quinn was preceded in death by her son, Thomas Quinn, in 1996. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dar Quinn of Escondido; sons Peter Quinn of Del Mar, Jonathan Quinn of Agoura Hills and Patrick Quinn of Brazil; sister Alma Painter of Redwood City; and 13 grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, at the Church of the Resurrection in Escondido, with the Rev. Charles Fuld officiating. A private interment is planned.
The family suggests memorial donations to the Church of the Resurrection Building Fund, 1445 Conway Drive, Escondido, CA 92025; or CARES Fund, 1445 Conway Drive, Escondido, CA 92027.

Julia Elias, 78
ESCONDIDO - Julia V. Elias, 78, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at Villa Pomerado in Poway.
Born June 29, 1922, in Kouba-Batroun, Lebanon, she lived in Escondido for 12 years. She was a daycare provider before retiring in 1998.
Mrs. Elias is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffery and Shari Elias of Escondido and Gary and Mary Elias of Big Bear; and grandchildren Josh, Khoury and Rachel.
A private interment is planned.
The family suggests memorial donations to Redwood Elderlink, 1151 South Redwood St., Escondido, CA 92025.

Elsie Parks, 80
BIG RIVER - Elsie Marie Parks, 80, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000.
Born Nov. 18, 1919, in Perham, Minn., she moved to Los Angeles in the early 1940s and had lived in Ramona for 19 years before moving to Big River. She was a live-in housekeeper and a factory worker during World War II.
Mrs. Parks was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Parks; and her son, James Parks, on April 13, 1984. She is survived by her son, Bob Parks of Big River; daughters Karen Parks of Big River and Annette Finley of El Cajon; three brothers of Montana or Minnesota; two sisters of Montana or Minnesota; and grandchildren Lisa and Amanda.
Viewing will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. today, Aug. 16, at Bonham Bros. & Lee Mortuary. A graveside service will follow at 11 a.m. at Nuevo Memory Gardens, where she will be buried next to her late son.

Luis Acuna, 17
SAN MARCOS - Luis A. Acuna Jr., 17, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, in San Marcos.
Born March 10, 1983, in Escondido, he lived in San Marcos.
Luis is survived by his mother, Christine Divesh of Poway; father Luis Acuna Sr. of San Marcos; and brother Justin Barber of San Marcos.
Viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, at Eternal Hills Mortuary Chapel. A funeral service is scheduled for noon Saturday, Aug. 19, at the mortuary. Interment icon will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Alfred Schick, 89
SAN MARCOS - Alfred H. Schick, 89, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000.
Born July 15, 1911, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he lived in San Marcos. He was a charter member and past president of the Kiwanis Club and a member of the Mason and Elk clubs.
Mr. Schick is survived by his wife, Lou Schick of San Marcos; daughters Beverly Quast of Yucca Valley, Gloria Falk of Portland, Ore.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
No service is planned.

Mary Ann Redfield, 88
VISTA - Mary Ann Redfield, 88, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, in Vista.
Born Sept. 6, 1911, in Iowa, she lived in Vista. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Redfield was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Redfield. She is survived by her brother, Raymond Parker; and numerous nephews and nieces.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park. Interment icon will follow.

Alice Ryan, 84
FALLBROOK - Alice Mary Ryan, 84, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, in Fallbrook.
Born Nov. 8, 1915, in Brainard, Minn., she lived in Fallbrook for five years. She was a homemaker for more than 60 years and a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Fallbrook. She was a past member of the Women's Auxiliary, Carpenter's Union and of Women's Guilds at various Catholic parishes.
Mrs. Ryan was preceded in death by her son, Lawrence E. Ryan, in 1986. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, John J. L. Ryan of Fallbrook; sons John J. Ryan of Chicago, Timothy E. Ryan of Victoria, Australia, Paul J. Ryan of Naperville, Ill., Peter D. Ryan of Yucca Valley and Michael E. Ryan of San Diego; daughters Elizabeth C. Moore of Apple Valley, Mary A. Campbell of Chicago, Judy A. Simko of Baldwin Park, Patrice H. Ryan of Roseburg, Ore., and Jane A. Cason of Riverside; brother Joe DeRoiser of Brainard; sisters Eunice Nollette of Minneapolis and Ann Arnold, Cleo Cahill, Mary King and Rose Schauffhausen, all of St. Paul, Minn.; 32 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., with a vigil and rosary to be recited from 6 to 7 p.m. today, Aug. 17, at Berry-Bell & Hall Fallbrook Mortuary. A Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 18, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Fallbrook, with the Rev. Bernie Rapp officiating. Burial will follow at Fallbrook Masonic Cemetery.

Walter Greenman, 60
DEL MAR - Walter Ray Greenman, 60, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at his home.
Born July 4, 1940, in Wichita, Kan., he lived in Monrovia for three years and in Del Mar for 10 years. He was the owner of Kachina Farms in San Jacinto and a self-employed owner and trainer of thoroughbred horses. He was the director for HBPA and won California Outstanding Best Trainor Award.
Mr. Greenman was preceded in death by his father, Melvin L. Greenman. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Jean Greenman of Monrovia; stepmother Roberta Teddy of Wichita; son and daughter-in-law Dean and Sylvia Greenman of Monrovia; daughters and son-in-law Debra and Greg Berg of Vista and Donna Alvarado of San Jacinto; brothers and sisters-in-law Paul and Donna Greenman of Goddard, Kan., Tommy and Kathy Greenman of Prescott, Ariz., and Melvin Jr. and Theresa Greenman of Wichita; sister Pam Greenman of Wichita; and grandchild Chantelle Alvarado of San Jacinto.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 18, at Del Mar Racetrack/Fairgrounds, Paddock Area, with the Revs. Ted Bear and John Howard officiating. A private burial is planned.

Jan Drazil, 52
FALLBROOK - Jan Bohumil Drazil, 52, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, of cancer, at his home.
Born July 8, 1948, in Mlada Boleslav, Czech Republic, he lived in Fallbrook for 23 years, having moved from Germany in 1977. He was the owner of Drazil Automotive Repair and Sales in Fallbrook for 23 years.
Mr. Drazil is survived by his wife of 31 years, Jana A. Drazil of Fallbrook; mother and father Jirina and Josef Drazil of Fallbrook; sons David Drazil and Daniel Drazil, both of Fallbrook; and brother Roman Drazil of Germany.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at the First Baptist Church in Fallbrook, with the Rev. George L. Breha officiating. A private cremation with inurnment is planned.

Frances Mangels, 68
OCEANSIDE - Frances Alice Mangels, 68, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, in Vista.
Born Jan. 8, 1932, in Los Angeles, she lived in Oceanside for 15 years. She was a retailer before retiring.
Mrs. Mangels is survived by her husband of 51 years, Ted Mangels of Oceanside; sons Christopher Charles Mangels and Ted Mangels III, both of Oceanside; daughter Thea Harmon of Winchester, Idaho; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A private cremation is planned with cremains to be scattered at sea.

Marciana Nieva, 92
ESCONDIDO - Marciana Fortes Nieva, 92, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Palomar Medical Center.
Born Oct. 29, 1907, in Agoo La Union, Philippines, she lived in Escondido for seven years and recently had lived in Murrieta. She was a homemaker and enjoyed dancing and singing.
Mrs. Nieva is survived by her daughters, Ceferina Lagasca, Consuelo Boado and Genovena Viloria, all of the Philippines, Violita Bucasas of Carson and Nellie Gagarin of Temecula; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a rosary recited at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, at St. Martha's Catholic Church in Murrieta. A Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at the church. Burial will follow at Laurel Cemetery in Murrieta.

Keith Vander Pol, 48
ESCONDIDO - Keith Arlan Vander Pol, 48, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at his home.
Born Jan. 2, 1952, in Mount Vernon, Wash., he lived in Escondido for 17 years. He was the vice president of development and administration for Westminster Theological Seminary and a member of Escondido United Reformed Church.
Mr. Vander Pol was preceded in death by his mother, Alida Alice Vander Pol, in May. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Deborah Vander Pol of Escondido; father Henry Vander Pol of Mount Vernon, Wash.; son Mark Vander Pol of Chicago; daughters and son-in-law Rebekah and Dan Eekhoff, Anna Vander Pol and Rachel Vander Pol, all of Escondido; brothers Alvin Vander Pol of Atlanta and Larry Vander Pol of Mount Vernon; and sisters Mary Werkhoven of Sunnyside, Wash., Yvonne Boon of Mount Vernon and Shirley Vander Pol of Wyoming, Mich.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 17, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary. A graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 18, at Oak Hill Memorial Park. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at the Escondido United Reformed Church.

Robert Garmong, 53
OCEANSIDE - Robert C. Garmong Sr., 53, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, in Oceanside.
Born Sept. 26, 1946, in Indiana, he lived in Oceanside for 22 years. He served in the U.S. Army in the Green Beret Special Forces, retiring as sergeant major in June 1999. He was awarded two Silver Stars, one Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for each of four tours of Vietnam.
Mr. Garmong is survived by his wife of 23 years, Yolanda Garmong of Oceanside; father John William Garmong of Harlingen, Texas; sons and daughter-in-law Robert C. Jr. and Rosa Clara Garmong of Oceanside and Gilbert DeLeon of Harlingen; daughters and son-in-law Linda Kay Garmong-Setzer and Chad Setzer and Stacey Grace Garmong all of Dallas; brother and sister-in-law Don and Nancy Garmong of Rhode Island; and five grandchildren.
Visitation was held Wednesday, Aug. 16, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. today, Aug. 17, at Eternal Hills Mortuary Chapel. Inurnment with full military honors is pending at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Jesse Bennett, 20
SAN MARCOS - Jesse Neilson Bennett III, 20, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at his home.
Born Jan. 5, 1980, in San Diego, he lived in San Marcos his entire life. He was a student at Palomar Community College and a member of the Worldwide Church of God in Vista.
Mr. Bennett is survived by his mother and father, V. Elaine and Jesse N. Bennett Jr. of San Marcos; sister and brother-in-law Elizabeth and Gary Evans of Ventura; aunts and uncles Connie Land of Escondido, Marge Strack of Covina, John and Carol Strack of Cedar City, Utah, Joan Casey of Carriere, Miss., Thelma and John Nowacki of Springfield, Va., Roy and Helen Bennett of Ruston, La., and Patricia Bennett of Greeley, Colo.; numerous friends, including Walt and Carol Loetell and Greg and Betty Evans and best friend Eric Holden; and numerous cousins.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, at San Marcos Cemetery, with the Rev. Paul Troike officiating. Burial will follow.
