Edson McCluskey, 82
RANCHO BERNARDO - Edson James McCluskey, 82, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at his home.
Born April 4, 1918, in Davenport, Neb., he lived in Rancho Bernardo for 12 years. He was the owner/operator of Crosstown Motors in Colorado and the owner/operator of the Village Inn Pancake House in Rapid City, S.D., before retiring in 1976. He served as lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Cabell and the USS Castor. He was a member of the Rapid City Masonic Lodge and Shrine and the Rancho Bernardo Country Club.
Mr. McCluskey was preceded in death by his daughter, Diana McCluskey, in 1968. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mildred A. McCluskey of Rancho Bernardo; daughters and sons-in-law Peggy and John Woods of Alexandria, Va., and Candis and Chris French of Johnston, Iowa; sister Delores Irving of Sterling, Colo.; and grandchildren Karen Bairley, Daniel Bairley, Christopher E. French, Jonathan French and Jeffrey French.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma, with military honors. Inurnment will follow.

OCEANSIDE - Parker W. Kimball, 81, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, in Oceanside.
Born Jan. 12, 1919, in Spokane, Wash., he lived in Oceanside.
Mr. Kimball is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mildred Kimball of Oceanside.

Marilla Marble, 77
SUN CITY - Marilla Lucy Marble, 77, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at Menifee Valley Medical Center.
Born April 6, 1923, in Oakland, she lived in Sun City for 12 years. She was an escrow officer for Kelly Temporary Service for 12 years and a member of the Sun City Swim Club, the Delta Beta Chi Sorority and the Travel Club in Sun City. She enjoyed travel.
Mrs. Marble is survived by her husband, Benjamin Marble of Sun City; sons Gene Heitmeyer of Walnut Creek and Robert Heitmeyer of Brentwood; daughters Christine Prater of Virginia City, Nev., and Gail Richards of Reno; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A private family burial will take place Tuesday, Aug. 22, at Riverside National Cemetery.

Arthur Hemphill, 81
MENIFEE - Arthur Dale Hemphill Jr., 81, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, of pneumonia, at Menifee Valley Medical Center in Sun City.
Born Jan. 29, 1919, in Minneapolis, he lived in Menifee for eight years. He was a self-employed architectural ceiling manufacturer in Orange County for 15 years and served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946.
Mr. Hemphill is survived by his wife, L. Marjorie Hemphill of Menifee; and sons and daughter-in-law Todd and Angie Hemphill of Anaheim and Arthur D. Hemphill III of Westminster.

SAN MARCOS - Jesse Neilson Bennett III, 20, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at his home.
Born Jan. 5, 1980, in San Diego, he lived in San Marcos his entire life. He was a student at Palomar Community College and a member of the Worldwide Church of God in Vista.
Mr. Bennett is survived by his mother and father, V. Elaine and Jesse N. Bennett Jr. of San Marcos; sister and brother-in-law Elizabeth and Gary Evans of Ventura; aunts and uncles Connie Land of Escondido, Marge Strack of Covina, John and Carol Strack of Cedar City, Utah, Joan Casey of Carriere, Miss., Thelma and John Nowacki of Springfield, Va., Roy and Helen Bennett of Ruston, La., and Patricia Bennett of Greeley, Colo.; numerous friends, including Walt and Carol Loetell and Greg and Betty Evans and best friend Eric Holden; and numerous cousins.

VISTA - Sam DiDomenic, 79, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at his home.
Born Sept. 22, 1920, in Joliet, Ill., he lived in Vista for 17 years. He was a sales representative with Tektronix for 20 years and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, retiring as a major after maintaining his Reserve status.
Mr. DiDomenic is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lorraine T. DiDomenic of Vista; daughters Chris Rodihiero of La Costa, Cathy Johnson of Fallbrook and Lisa Stablein of Orange; brother Tom DiDomenic of Joliet; sisters Julie Johnson, Gloria Johnson and Ann DiDomenic, all of Joliet, and Ann Petrusa of Palm Desert; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Vista, with the Rev. Patrick Mulcahy officiating. A private cremation is planned with inurnment to take place at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma.

Charles Betancourt, 73
SAN MARCOS - Charles Jerome Betancourt, 73, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at his home.
Born Sept. 19, 1926, in the Bronx, N.Y., he lived in San Marcos for 14 years. He was a police officer with the New York City Police Department for 30 years. He served as a seaman 1st class in the U.S. Navy and worked with the Senior Crime Prevention Office of the San Marcos Sheriff Department. He was an outdoorsman.
Mr. Betancourt is survived by his son, Charles Betancourt Jr. of Tahoe City; brother Harold Betancourt of Escondido; sister Marilyn B. Jones of Poway; and many other relatives and friends.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at Dearborn Memorial Park. Interment
will follow.

Edwin Knox, 60
FALLBROOK - Edwin "Ed" John Knox, 60, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, of a heart attack, in Fallbrook.
Born Dec. 30, 1939, in Salt Lake City, he lived in Fallbrook for 50 years. He was a lumber yard manager for Hank's Hardware in Fallbrook and worked with CAST Productions Theatre Group in Fallbrook building sets and doing repairs for several years.
Mr. Knox is survived by his wife of 36 years, Nancy D. Knox of Fallbrook; mother Margaret M. Stone of Fallbrook; daughter and son-in-law Karen D. an James Heil of Oceanside; brothers Graham W. Knox and James C. Knox, both of Fallbrook, and Phillip Lee Stone of Escondido; and one grandchild.
Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, at Fallbrook Masonic Cemetery, with the Rev. Nancy Berggren officiating.

Born Nov. 12, 1997, in California, she lived in Oceanside for two years and nine months.
Valeria is survived by her mother and father, Alicia and Eduardo Cisneros of Oceanside; and sisters Alejandra Cisneros and Daniela Cisneros.
Visitation and viewing will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, at Camino Real Church in Vista, with the Rev. Hector Cedillo officiating. ESCONDIDO - Asher Alexander Gates Jr., 91, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at Palomar Medical Center.
Born Sept. 8, 1908, in Ecru, Miss., he lived in San Diego County for 11 years. He was a printer for the U.S. Government before retiring after 35 years.
Mr. Gates was preceded in death by his wife, Irene H. Gates. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Larry S. and Eleanor Gates of San Diego; brother Julian Gates of Jackson, Miss.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Monday, Aug. 14, at Lakewood Mortuary in Jackson, Miss. Interment

OCEANSIDE - Mary Arlene Ralph Lyman, 70, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, of heart failure, at Villa Monte Vista in Poway.
Born April 24, 1930, in St. Paul, Minn., she lived in Oceanside for two years. She was an administrative supervisor for the Internal Revenue Service.
Mrs. Lyman is survived by her husband of 48 years, George R. Lyman of Oceanside; sons James Lyman of Boston, William Lyman of Los Angeles and Robert Lyman of San Diego; daughter MaryAnn Lyman of Hayward; and brother Jack Ralph of Rosemont, Minn.
A Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, at Mission San Luis Rey Church, with the Rev. Garrett Galvin officiating. A private interment will take place at Riverside National Cemetery.

SAN MARCOS - John S. Cain, 66, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, of cancer, at his home.
Born Feb. 4, 1934, in Indiana, he lived in San Marcos for seven years. He was the owner of Business Cards Tomorrow and served as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
Mr. Cain is survived by his wife of 45 years, Barbara Cain of San Marcos; son and daughter-in-law Creston and Lisa Cain of Vista; daughter Christina Cain of Vista; sisters and brother-in-law Margaret and Vern Tefft of Arizona and Louise Holcker of San Diego; and grandchildren Kayla, Carley and Lindsey Cain.

ESCONDIDO - Marjorie V. Barg died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, in Escondido.
Born in Milwaukee, Wis., she lived in Escondido for 24 years. She was an accountant for the Milwaukee School District before retiring in 1973.
Mrs. Barg was preceded in death by her sister, Catherine Barg, in 1983; and her cousin, Arnold Peters. She is survived by her cousins, June Weimer of Minocqua, Wis., Lorraine Vann of Green Bay, Wis., and Richard Stuverud of Seattle; other relatives Andrew Weimer of Luxembourg and Karen Wenke of Ewa Beach, Hawaii; and friends Margaret Rach of San Diego, Edna and Charles Schmidt of Sequim, Wash., Jean and Buzz Elias of Wheat Ridge, Colo., and Ellen and Norman Plant of Escondido.

Jessie Smedstad, 85
FALLBROOK - Jessie E. Smedstad, 85, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at her home in Fallbrook.
Born June 25, 1915, in Saskatchewan, Canada, she lived in Fallbrook for 21 years. She was a graduate of the Watchtower Bible School of Gilead in New York and served as a missionary in El Salvador for several years.
Mrs. Smedstad is survived by her husband of 54 years, Curtis L. Smedstad of Fallbrook; daughter and son-in-law Judith Ann and Daryl F. Scott of Fallbrook; brother and sister-in-law Andrew and Kay Sagen of Yorkton, Saskatchewan; sisters and brother-in-law Ann Wilson of Wapella, Saskatchewan and Mary and James Maynard of St. Thomas, Ontario; and several sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Monday, Aug. 14, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Fallbrook, with Andrew Laguna and Donald Van Ike officiating.

Claud Moberly, 80
VISTA - Claud Francis Moberly, 80, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, of a heart attack, at Tri-City Medical Center.
Born Dec. 3, 1919, in St. Francis, Kan., he lived in Vista for 25 years. He was the administrator and vocational director of overseas schools for the U.S State Department Foreign Service before retiring in September 1975. He served in the U.S. Navy Construction Battalion, Pacific Command, during World War II. He was the owner of a welding shop, a Realtor and a member of the Community Church of Vista, serving as elder and Gideon Bible member.
Mr. Moberly was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon Ruth Kulchisky, in 1999. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ilene Ruth Moberly of Vista; daughter and sons-in-law Claudette I. and Col. Fred Kennedy of Niceville, Fla., and Michael Kulchisky of Austin, Texas; sister Opal June Smith of Twin Falls, Idaho; grandchildren Kelley Coppinger, Captain Fred Kennedy, Michael Kulchisky Jr., James Kennedy and Corrie Beverly; and great-grandchild Brendan Kennedy.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, at the Community Church of Vista, with the Revs. Joel Vincent, Mark Alvis and Mark Lybarger officiating. A private cremation is planned with burial to take place at Arroyo Grande District Cemetery in Arroyo Grande.
