Mary Watson, 82

RAMONA - Mary Catherine "Cathie" Watson, 82, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at her home.

Born Feb. 28, 1917, in Tallahassee, Fla., she lived in Ramona for 23 years. She attended Ringling Art School and graduated from Florida State University. She served on the board of the Ramona Pioneer Historical Society.

Mrs. Watson is survived by her husband of 51 years, Alton C. Watson of Ramona; daughters Anne Christine Barrack of Solvang and Barbara Claire Williams of Folsom; grandchildren Thomas J. Barrack III, Jodi Barrack, Bret Watson Barrack, Alton Park Williams and Scott Thomas Williams; and several nephews and a niece.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at the Ramona Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Herb Christ officiating. A committal service and burial will follow at Ramona Nuevo Memory Gardens.

The family suggests memorial donations to the Ramona Pioneer Historical Society, PO Box 625, Ramona, CA 92065.

Dwight Seyfer, 95

ESCONDIDO - Dwight Carl Seyfer, 95, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, in Escondido.

Born Feb. 3, 1904, in Mound City, Mo., he lived in Escondido for seven years. He was a housepainter for 35 years.

Mr. Seyfer was preceded in death by his wife, Hazzel Seyfer. He is survived by his son, Donald Seyfer of Lexington, S.C.; daughter and son-in-law Shirley and Jack Story of Fallbrook; grandchildren Raymond Story, Gayla Narike, Lydia Knopf, Tony Seyfer and David Seyfer; and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Berry-Bell & Hall Chapel, with Dr. Dennis Y. Ginoza officiating. Interment icon will take place in South Carolina.

The family suggests memorial donations to the American Lung Association, 2750 Fourth Ave., San Diego, Ca 92102.

Dominic Moody, 16 mos.

ESCONDIDO - Dominic Jason Moody, 16 months, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, in Escondido.

Born Sept. 13, 1998, in Escondido, he lived in Escondido for 16 months.

Dominic is survived by his mother and father, Nicole and Jason Moody of Escondido; aunts Zarisha Ingwerson of Brookings, Ore., and Jennifer Brouwer of Escondido; uncle Jason Brouwer of Escondido; great-uncle Kelly Ciuffreda of Escondido; cousin Nicholas Brouwer of Escondido; grandparents Michael Ciuffreda and Cheryl Ciuffreda of Escondido, and Tom Moody and Ruth Moody of Brookings, Ore.; and great-grandparents James Gordon and Margaret Gordon of Poway.

A private viewing is planned. A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. today, Jan. 11, at Calvary Chapel of Escondido. A private graveside service will be held.

Nicholas Faber, 89

ESCONDIDO - Nicholas Joseph Faber, 89, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, in San Diego.

Born Nov. 3, 1910, in Evanston, Ill., he lived in Escondido. He was a production line supervisor for G.D. Searle pharmaceuticals and a member of St. Timothy's Catholic Church.

Mr. Faber is survived by his wife of 65 years, Cecilia Mary Faber of Escondido; sons and daughters-in-law Tom and Jan Faber of Skokie, Ill., Nick and Betty Faber of Evansville, Ind. and Mike Faber of Madison, Wis.; daughter and son-in-law Margaret and Ken Hoppenrath of Escondido; and grandchildren Barbara, William, Deborah, Nicholas, Susan, Joseph, Cathy, Jennifer and Kenneth.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary recited at 7 p.m., today, Jan. 11, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary. A Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at St. Timothy's Catholic Church in Escondido. A private cremation is planned.

Skip Gantos, 68

OCEANSIDE - Gloria "Skip" Gantos, 68, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, from 3rd degree burns to 45 percent of her body suffered in a house fire, at UCSD Burn Unit ICU.

Born Sept. 19, 1931, in Philadephia, she lived in Oceanside for 10 years. She was an entrepreneur, working as a dietician, a clothing business owner, a food manager for restaurants, a consultant for Beauty Control Cosmetics, a caretaker for the sick and an independent representative for American Communications Network.

Mrs. Gantos is survived by her sons, Kevin Gantos of Cleveland and Keith Gantos of Hanover, N.H.; daughters Christy Lagania of Cleveland and Penny Boyd of Oceanside; brother Raymond Gentile of Naples, Fla.; and nine grandchildren.

A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Church in Oceanside, with the Rev. John Dolan officiating.

The family suggests memorial donations to the Skip Gantos Fund, c/o Good Service Inc., 7018 Beres Ford, Cleveland, OH 44130.

Peter Boddy, 52

ESCONDIDO - Dr. Peter Hanson Boddy, M.D., M.P.H., 52, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at Palomar Medical Center.

Born Feb. 15, 1947, in Massachusetts, he lived most of his childhood in the San Diego area. He completed his pre-med and received bachelor's degrees in anthropology and psychology from UC Davis. He established a school on San Andres Island in the Caribbean and served as a lab technician in the military during the Vietnam War. He was a teacher in Peru while studying medicine. He earned a master's degree in public health and worked at the Logan Heights Family Health Center, developing community health education programs and helping to establish a health education and preventative medicine department. He worked in AIDS education in California, Hawaii, Arizona and New Mexico. He worked in management and training in Latin America and helped establish Bolivia's first master's degree program in public health. He was chief of party for Management Systems for Health. He was a member of the Baha'i International Community and was elected to its chief national administrative body in three countries.

Mr. Boddy is survived by his wife of 27 years, Patricia Treadwell Boddy; sons and daughter-in-law Louis Boddy and Marion Ore Body of Peru and William Boddy of Nicaragua; brother and sister-in-law Kim Boddy and Linda Bergvinsson of Seattle; and parents Marie and Gregory Boddy of Poway.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Jan. 4, at El Camino Chapel. Burial took place on Thursday, Jan. 6, at El Camino Memorial Park.

John Knox, 72

ANCKORAGE, Alaska - John Davidson Knox, 72, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, in Anckorage.

Born Feb. 2, 1927, in Boston, he lived in Anckorage. He worked for Globel Corporation on the Alaska North Slope and served in the U.

S. Merchant Marines during World War II. He served in the U.S. Army for four years and was assistant and chief engineer for Scripps Institute of Oceanography.

Mr. Knox is survived by his brothers, Carl Knox of Carlsbad, and Hugh Knox Jr. of Homer, Alaska; and sisters Jean Yearick of Oceanside and Virginia Kern of Lompoc.

A private cremation and scattering of ashes at sea is planned.

Nancy Mercardante, 78

VISTA - Nancy Ann Mercardante, 78, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, in Oceanside.

Born Aug. 17, 1921, in New York City, she lived in Vista for 26 years. She was a loan officer for North Island Federal Credit Union for 12 years and was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Vista and the American-Italian Catholic Club.

Mrs. Mercardante is survived by her sons, Deacon Frank Mercardante of Vista, the Rev. Vincent Mercardante of Jefferson, Ga., and Patrick Mercardante of New Orleans, La.; sister Emily Cinnamo of East Branch, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be held from 6 to 7 p.m., with a vigil service at 7 p.m., today, Jan. 11, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Vista. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Vista, with the Rev. Patrick Mulcahy officiating. Interment icon will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Glen Abbey Memorial Park in Bonita, with Deacon Frank Mercandante officiating.

Keith Martin, 80

OCEANSIDE - Keith Fenton Martin, 80, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Brighton Gardens Health Care Center in Carlsbad.

Born April 5, 1919, in La Veta, Colo., he lived in Oceanside for 70 years. He served in the military during World War II with the 104th Division "Timberwolves" and was awarded a Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars with Valor and a Combat Infantry Badge. He was a supervisory foreman with San Diego Gas & Electric Co., retiring after 45 years. He did volunteer maintenance work at Ocean View Cemetery and was a member of Oceanside First Baptist Church and the Oceanside Historical Society.

Mr. Martin is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Jones Martin; son and daughter-in-law Keith P. and Emily Martin; daughter and son-in-law Kathleen C. and Dennis Newton; brothers Clair P. Martin of San Diego and Frank A. Martin of Oceanside; and grandchildren Jessica of Atlanta and Sean of Fort Campbell of Kentucky.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park, with Chaplain Dennis R. Newton and the Rev. Hal Schulz officiating. A reception will follow at the Fireside Room at Oceanside First Baptist Church.

Ralfe Kaiser, 69
KENT, Wash. - Ralfe Edward Kaiser, 69, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, from colon cancer.

Born June 28, 1930, in Terre Haute, Ind., he previously lived in Vista. He was a 1949 graduate of Mishawaka High School in Indiana and earned a bachelor of art degree from Bryan College in Dayton, Tenn., and a master of arts degree in Christian education from Wheaton College in Illinois. He served as minister of Christian education and youth and as senior pastor in more than 10 churches in the Midwest, California, Oregon and Washington. He developed a translation of the New Testament with study guides and wrote children's Christian education workbooks.

Mr. Kaiser is survived by his wife, Judy Kaiser; son and daughter-in-law Jeffrey Wayne and Mary Kaiser of Issaquah, Wash.; daughter and son-in-law Julie and Todd Kaiser of Palm Desert; and grandchildren Nicole Kaiser and Zachery O'Dell.

A memorial celebration of his life and ministry will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at the Community Church of Vista.

The family suggests memorial donations to underwrite the printing of his translated workbooks to the Ralph Kaiser Memorial Fund, c/o Community Church of Vista, 165 Eucalyptus Ave., Vista, CA 92084.

Lawrence O'Toole, 68

VISTA - Lawrence D. O'Toole, 68, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, in Vista.

Born Nov. 22, 1931, in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada, he lived in Vista for 20 years. He worked as a supervisor for new construction and was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Vista.

Mr. O'Toole is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law, Casey O'Toole of Newport Beach and Dan and Traci O'Toole of Corona; daughters and sons-in-law Katie and Rip Pratt of Escondido, Colleen and Stephen Desio of Corona, Maureen and Mark Mueller of Oxnard and Peggy Saffel of Riverside; brothers Howard O'Toole of B.C., Canada, Pat O'Toole of South Dakota and Thomas O'Toole of Indiana; sisters Lillian O'Neill of Australia and Betty Trine of Los Osos; and 22 grandchildren.

A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Vista. Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. at San Luis Rey Mission Cemetery.

Robert Wells, 89

LAKE SAN MARCOS - Robert G. Wells, 89, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, of congestive heart failure, at his home.

Born Feb. 17, 1910, in Detroit, he lived at Lake San Marcos for 23 years. He was a manufacturing representative for Bird Corporation.

Mr. Wells is survived by his wife, Lucille Wells of Lake San Marcos; son Richard Wells of Orlando, Fla.; grandson David Barber of Florida; and great-grandchildren Sasha, Brittany, Zachary and Tyler Barber.

Andrea Minniear, 58

VISTA - Andrea Minniear, 58, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Palomar Medical Center.

Born Nov. 19, 1941, in Middletown, Ohio, she lived in Vista for 31 years.

Mrs. Minniear is survived by her husband of 38 years, Charles Minniear of Vista; sons and daughter-in-law Charles and Valerie Minniear of Laughlin, Nev., and Tim Minniear of Vista; daughter Carla Jager of Rancho Cucamonga; brother Charles Smiley of Solana Beach; sister Mary Rous of Ventura; and grandchildren Kayla, C.J., James, Brittany, Breeauna, Jake and Jessica.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at Palomar Heights Church Assembly of God in San Marcos.

Harold Schultz, 88

VISTA - Harold Harvey Schultz, 88, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, in Vista.

Born Dec. 2, 1911, in Chicago, he lived in Vista for 26 years. He was a self-employed painting contractor for 26 years.

Mr. Schultz was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Schultz, on Jan. 3, 2000; and his daughter, Audrey Schultz, in 1947. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Dr. Denny and Bobbie Schultz of Kalispell, Mont.; sister Yetta Price of Los Angeles; and three grandsons.

No local service is scheduled. A private cremation with scattering of cremains at sea is planned.

Hubert Smith, 87

VISTA - Hubert Smith, 87, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, in Vista.

Born July 17, 1912, in Wapanucka, Okla., he lived in North County for 35 years. He was a cattle rancher at Pala Ranch for 60 years.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Clara Smith of Vista; son Jay Smith of Garden Valley; daughters Gerri Turnbull of Oceanside, Edna Martin of Vista and Linda Pappas of Loveland; sister Geneva Batlementi of Mount Saint Helens, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at Allen Brothers Mortuary, Vista chapel, with the Rev. Nick Sakis officiating. A graveside service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, at Wildomar Cemetery. Burial will follow.

Javier Ascencio, 50

ESCONDIDO - Javier Ascencio, 50, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, in Escondido.

Born April 29, 1949, in Michoacan, Jacona, Mexico, he lived in Escondido for 25 years. He was a self-employed landscaper and a member of North Escondido Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall.

Mr. Ascencio was preceded in death by his mother, Maria Jimenez, in 1984. He is survived by his son, Javier Ascencio Jr. of California; daughter Reina Ascencio of Escondido; brothers Jose Ascencio, Jesus Ascencio and Rey Ascencio, all of Northern California, Agustin Ascencio of Vista and Manual Ascencio of Escondido; sisters Teresa Pimentel of Mexico and Guadualupe Mendez of Michigan; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Burial will follow.

Margaret Giguere, 71

VISTA - Margaret Pagnano Giguere, 71, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at her home.

Born Jan. 19, 1929, in Philadelphia, she lived in Vista for 41 years.

Mrs. Giguere is survived by her husband of 53 years, Roland Giguere of Vista; daughters Irene Heron of Philadelphia, Diane Vanendries of Sioux Falls, Iowa, and Carol Andrews of Oceanside; brother Joseph Pagnano of Philadelphia; sisters Angie Guidone of Las Vegas and Marie Pagnano of Philadelphia; and grandchildren Stefanie Burl, Frank Jr. and Daniel Heron, Gary Vandendries and Robert and Jennifer Andrews.

A reception for family and friends will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at the home of Carol Andrews. Call (760) 940-9231 for location.
