Johanna (Hanna) Barnett Wenrick
Community singer, actress

A memorial service will be held at Woodside Village Church, 3154 Woodside Road, Woodside, at 3 p.m. Saturday, January 12, for Johanna (Hanna) Barnett Wenrick. Mrs. Wenrick, who lived in Woodside for more than 40 years, died December 31 following a brief illness. She was 68.

She and her husband, Howard Lawrence (Larry) Wenrick, returned last summer to their honeymoon location in Yosemite to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

Born in San Francisco and raised in Santa Rosa, Mrs. Wenrick began attending Stanford University when she was 16 years old.

She was an active performer in her community, known for "her spirited use of her guitar and the generous gifts of herself," according to her family. Mrs. Wenrick sang in the choir at Woodside Village Church, where she was a member for more than four decades, and starred in many community theater productions.

Roles such as Bloody Mary in "South Pacific," the Wizard in "Wizard of Oz," Dolly in "Hello Dolly," and Auntie Mame in "Mame" particularly suited her lively personality, her family said.

Mrs. Wenrick is survived by her husband; a daughter, Martha W. Greenough of San Mateo; a son, David L. Wenrick of Woodside; and three grandchildren.

She is also survived by her sister, Constance A. Barnett of San Francisco.

Donations in Mrs. Wenrick's memory may be made to Sequoia Hospital Foundation, 170 Alameda de las Pulgas, Redwood City, CA 94062-9969; or for the benefit of the Woodside Village Church Choir.

Oonagh Buchanan

Travel agent, genealogist

Oonagh Buchanan died January 1 at her home in Portola Valley after many years of combating cancer.

A rosary and Mass were held in her honor January 5 at St. Denis Catholic Church in Sharon Heights.

A resident of Portola Valley for 35 years, she spent her youth in Hollywood, and her early marriage life as the wife of a career Navy fighter pilot, moving frequently from coast to coast.

After her husband's retirement from the Navy, she settled with him in the Portola Valley area and graduated with honors from San Jose State University, earning a bachelor's degree in art history.

She donated much of her time as a Pink Lady at Stanford Hospital, volunteered for Reach for Recovery, and belonged to the American Association of University Women, the Atherlons and the Peninsula Retired Officers' Wives Association.

Her love of travel and people inspired her to become a travel agent, which she did for more than 15 years, family members said.

She had many interests, among them reading, oil painting, sewing, clothes designing, and hat making. Genealogy and travel were her favorite passions, and she spent a considerable amount of time traveling around the globe on a quest for knowledge about different cultures and her ancestors, family members said.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Sam Buchanan of Portola Valley, daughter Nancy Pfleg of Southlake, son Duffy Buchanan of Thousand Oaks, daughter Janet Millington of Redwood City, and seven grandchildren.

Mary Louise Corbus

Former Menlo resident

A memorial service will be held in San Francisco on Monday, January 7, for Mary Louise Corbus, who died recently in Juneau, Alaska, while visiting her son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Katie Corbus. She was 91.

The service is set for 3 p.m. at the Chapel of Grace, Grace Cathedral, 1100 California St., San Francisco.

She was born and raised by a pioneering family in Stockton, California, her family said. She attended Stanford University, where she graduated in 1933 and met her future husband, Bill Corbus Sr. They were marriage in 1935.

They initially lived in San Francisco and later moved to Menlo Park, where their two sons, Bill and Barc, were raised.

In 1965, the couple moved to New York City, where Mr. Corbus worked for the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. Upon his retirement they returned to San Francisco. Mr. Corbus died in 1998.

Mrs. Corbus was active in church and charitable organizations.

In addition to Bill and Katie, she is survived by her son Barc and his wife, Priscilla, of Arvada, Colorado; two grandsons; and three great-grandsons.

Memorials may be made to the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health, 770 Welsh Road, Palo Alto, CA 94304.

Lloyd Hilligoss

Former Atherton resident

A memorial service will be held in the chapel at Olivet Memorial Park, 1601 Hillside Blvd., Colma, at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, January 3, for Lloyd Jack Hilligoss of Santa Rosa. Mr. Hilligoss died December 21 of injuries suffered in an auto accident December 1 near Stockton. His wife, Mary Lou, died instantly in the same accident.

While a resident of Atherton from 1965 to 1984, Mr. Hilligoss was an active member of Menlo Park Presbyterian Church for 19 years and the Sharon Heights Golf and Country Club.

Mr. and Mrs. Hilligoss worked as a team to build and operate one of the largest carnival companies in the United States, Fun Fair/Foley & Burk Combined Shows, out of Redwood City.

In 1985, the Hilligosses moved from Atherton to Sebastopol, and later retired to their home in Santa Rosa.

Mr. Hilligoss is survived by his four children: Greg Hilligoss of San Jose, Stephanie Henon and her husband, Ron, of Sebastopol, Robert Hilligoss of Santa Rosa, and Tom Hilligoss and his wife, Kate, of Redwood City; a sister, Charlotte Reynolds of Long Beach; and eight grandchildren.

Memorials in Mr. Hilligoss' name may be made to Knox Presbyterian Church in Santa, Rosa where the Hilligosses attended church.

Leah L. Callaghan

40-year Atherton resident

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 12, at Church of the Nativity, Menlo Park, for Leah L. Callaghan who died December 16 at her home in Atherton. She was 83.

Mrs. Callaghan was born in Dayton, Nevada, and worked for the state of Nevada before marrying Edward Callaghan in 1946. The Callaghans lived in Reno until they moved to Atherton in 1960.

Mrs. Callaghan volunteered at the Encinal School library and later worked at the Atherton Library for 15 years until she retired in 1984. She was an active member of a study group at Church of the Nativity for many years. Mr. Callaghan died in 1997.

Mrs. Callaghan is survived by her daughters, Kathleen Callaghan of Sunnyvale, Sheila Callaghan of San Mateo, and Erin Callaghan of Redwood City. The family requests no memorial donations.

Thomas Graves

Accounting executive

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 19, at Spangler Mortuary, 650 Live Oak Ave. in Menlo Park, for Thomas J. Graves, who died in his Atherton home December 31. He was 85.

Mr. Graves was born in Tell City, Indiana, and graduated at the top of his class from Notre Dame University. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army in World War II.

He joined the accounting firm of Haskins & Sells, now Deloitte Touche, where he rose to become managing partner of the San Francisco office in 1966, retiring in 1981. His many professional achievements included selection as a member of President Lyndon Johnson's Economic Advisory Council.

After retirement, Mr. Graves enjoyed European travel, attending San Francisco Opera and Symphony performances, jogging, skiing and golf. In the early 1990s he developed Alzheimer's disease.

Nicknamed "The Chief," Mr. Graves was a respected leader in all aspects of his life, say family members.

He is survived by his daughter Barbara Graves of Palo Alto; son John Graves of Snoqualmie, Washington; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and stepchildren Georgia Berner of Pittsburgh, Brenda Murdock of Carmel, Elizabeth Murdock of Pasadena, and J.M. Murdock of San Francisco. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Angela Walsh, and wife, Beverly Murdock Graves.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Research Fund, 2065 W. El Camino Real, Suite C, Mountain View, 94940.

Philip R. Jeuck III

Senior research engineer

Phillip R. Jeuck III of Menlo Park, who was employed at SRI International for 25 years, died January 7 at Sequoia Health Services, Redwood City. He was 51.

Mr. Jeuck was born in Evanston, Illinois, and raised in Mount Prospect, Illinois. He was a graduate of Northwestern University with bachelor and master's degrees in mechanical engineering.

He was marriage in 1973, and in 1977, moved to Menlo Park, where he was employed by SRI International.

Mr. Jeuck was an active volunteer in his children's school and sports activities. He taught photography to students at La Entrada School and was a Little League coach for his son's baseball team and his daughter's softball team. He will be remembered for his generosity to friends and to the less fortunate, say family members.

Survivors include his wife Suzanne; children Melissa and Steven of Menlo Park; mother Marie Jeuck of Arlington Heights, Illinois; and sister Susan Waldbuesser of Prospect Heights, Illinois.

Elissa Wank Williams

Active in Menlo business community

Palo Alto native Elissa Williams, wife of longtime Peninsula advertising executive the late Gary Williams, died January 5 following a brief battle with cancer. She was 67.

Ms. Williams, well-known in the Menlo Park business community, was active for years with the Chamber of Commerce and most recently, Menlo Management Co.

She was an active volunteer for many local charities, including the Boys & Girls Club in Menlo Park and the Children's Health Council in Palo Alto.

"Menlo Park has lost a charming and delightful woman," said Menlo Park business leader Lee Boucher. "Her upbeat personality and her uncanny gift of hospitality made her a special person to so many."

She was born to Mel and Bernice Wank in Palo Alto in 1934, attended Jordan Junior High School, and graduated from Palo Alto High School in 1952. She marriage her high school sweetheart.

Ms. Williams is survived by five children and six grandchildren.

The family prefers donations to the Elissa and Gary T. Williams Memorial Fund to benefit youth, sport and art in the Menlo Park/Palo Alto area. Donations can be made through the Peninsula Community Foundation, 1700 South El Camino Real, Suite 300, San Mateo, 94402.

A memorial service was scheduled for January 13 at Lucie Stern Community Center Ballroom in Palo Alto.

Monsignor Edwin Kennedy

Retired St. Raymond's pastor

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 7, at St. Raymond's Church, Menlo Park, for Monsignor Edwin J. Kennedy, the founding pastor of St. Raymond's, who died January 27 in San Francisco. Monsignor Kennedy died one day before his 94th birthday.
Ordained in 1932, Monsignor Kennedy was the longest-serving priest in the Archdiocese of San Francisco. He was named a monsignor by Pope Pius XII in 1949.

A native of San Francisco, Monsignor Kennedy graduated from St. Patrick's Seminary and earned a doctorate in canon law from Catholic University in Washington, D.C., in 1935.

In 1942, after serving as assistant chancellor of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, he was sent to Hawaii as assistant to the Vicar Delegate of the U.S. Armed Forces in the Pacific. On his return in 1950, he was named pastor of the new St. Raymond's Church, where he served for 28 years until his retirement in 1978.

After retiring from St. Raymond's, he served for 18 years as chaplain to the cloistered Dominican sisters of Corpus Christi Monastery in Menlo Park. At Corpus Christi, Monsignor Kennedy said Mass every morning at 6:45 a.m. and presided over Benediction each afternoon. "He was wonderful," says Dominican Sister Mary Christine. "We were so fortunate to have him with us. He was a very congenial person."

The Rev. Ray Zohlen succeeded Monsignor Kennedy as pastor of St. Raymond's in 1978. "He was very good to me when I became pastor. He continued to be active in the parish, especially with the Legion of Mary, and attended all the funerals," says Father Zohlen, now retired. Continuing to live in Menlo Park allowed Monsignor Kennedy to stay in touch with many former parishioners.

In 1996 Monsignor Kennedy became a resident of St. Anne's Home in San Francisco, operated by the Little Sisters of the Poor. He returned to St. Raymond's two years ago to take part in the church's 50th anniversary celebration.

Monsignor Kennedy is survived by nieces Maria Philbin of Santa Rosa, Rita Tescher of Long Beach, Georgelle Wishard of Arizona, and Jeanetta Kreil of Louisiana; and nephews Paul Tescher of Ohio, and Walter, Roger and Robert Wishard of Northern California.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held January 31 at St. Mary's Cathedral, San Francisco, with Archbishop of San Francisco William J. Levada presiding. A graveside service was held February 1 at Holy Cross Cemetery, Menlo Park.

George Horne

Retired chemical engineer

George Horne, a 45-year resident of Menlo Park, died January 27 at Stanford Medical Center. He was 86.
Mr. Horne retired in 1980 after a 32-year career with Chevron. He worked in the engineering department as one of Chevron's heat-exchanger experts. Early in his career with the company, he and his family lived in Saudi Arabia and the Netherlands.

He was very active in the Menlo Park Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Horne is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carol; daughters Margaret Monroe of Menlo Park and Nancy Griffin of San Carlos; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services have been held. Memorial donations may be made to the Menlo Park Presbyterian Church, 950 Santa Cruz Ave., Menlo Park.

David Botsford

Former advertising executive

David Botsford, a former Portola Valley resident, died December 18 following complications from abdominal surgery. He was 85.
Born in Portland, Oregon, he graduated from Stanford University and did graduate work at Columbia University. At Stanford he was associate editor of The Stanford Daily.

He continued his interest in journalism as a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle before switching to a career in advertising. At the height of his career, he headed one of San Francisco's largest advertising agencies, Botsford Ketchum Inc., founded by his father.

During World War II, Mr. Botsford was editorial chief of the U.S. Office of War Information Psychological Warfare Team. He once mused that writing propaganda leaflets was not unlike writing copy for an advertising agency.

Mr. Botsford made frequent business trips to Europe and Asia, accompanied by his wife, and they continued to travel widely after his retirement.

He enjoyed hiking, biking, sailing, reading and the opera, especially ones featuring his brother-in-law, Theodor Uppman, who sang with the Metropolitan Opera.

He is survived by his wife, Margot Botsford of Palo Alto; sons Peter Botsford of Sunnyvale and Christopher Botsford of Palo Alto; daughter Ardsley McNeilly of Sydney, Australia; and four grandchildren.

Charles Smith

Owner of Children's Bootery

Charles Leo Smith, 80, who fitted a generation of children's shoes at Children's Bootery in downtown Menlo Park, died of pneumonia in Clear Lake on January 27. Mr. Smith lived in Menlo Park for many years before moving to Clear Lake 20 years ago.
Mr. Smith was a native of San Francisco and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1938. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, rising from apprentice seaman to petty officer first class (signalman).

He founded the Children's Bootery on Santa Cruz Avenue (now the site of Marche restaurant) and expanded his business to 22 children's shoe stores. He was a former division president of U.S. Shoe Corporation, chief administrative officer, Children's Shoe World, and director of Jumping Jacks Shoes.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Patrol Craft Sailors Association and DE Sailors Association.

Survivors include his wife, Anna, of Clear Lake; his children, Bernadette, Paul, Damien, Patrick, Mark, and Christopher; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held February 1 at St. Raymond's Catholic Church in Menlo Park, with Interment at Skylawn Memorial Park, San Mateo. Donations may be made to Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep, 1055 Ellis Street, San Francisco, 94109-7795; or Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, P.O. Box 302, Maryknoll, N.Y. 10545-0302. Arrangements under the direction of Redwood Chapel, Redwood City.

Albert Robert Aldinger

Leading community volunteer

Albert Robert Aldinger, a World War II veteran and an active volunteer in the area, died January 20 at his residence in The Sequoias retirement community in Portola Valley. He was 89. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 9, at the First Lutheran Church of Palo Alto at 600 Homer Ave.
Mr. Aldinger was a lifelong resident of the Bay Area, born in Oakland and graduating from Armstrong College in Berkeley. He served in the United States Army during World War II, attaining the rank of captain. He met his future wife while stationed in Washington, D.C.

During his career, Mr. Aldinger worked for the Standard Oil Company (now ChevronTexaco Corporation) as an in-house management consultant, which required him to travel throughout the United States, with frequent visits to Europe and Central America.

During his 25-year retirement, Mr. Aldinger volunteered his time and energy to many organizations, including the Small Business Administration office in San Francisco and the Chevron Retirees Association, of which he was a past international president. He gave unselfishly of his time and was considered a helpful, kind and generous man, relatives said.

At The Sequoias, Mr. Aldinger was known as "Mr. Sequoian" in recognition of his energetic participation in many of the community's resident programs, and as "Mr. Fourth of July" for his custom of dressing up in a red, white and blue suit and top hat to preside over the holiday festivities, according to his family.

Mr. Aldinger is survived by Eleanor, his wife of 56 years; sons Gary of Stanwood, Washington, and Karl of Bend, Oregon; daughter Edith C. Brockmeyer of Aurora, Colorado; and four grandchildren.

The family requests that contributions in Mr. Aldinger's name be made to the First Lutheran Church of Palo Alto or to a charity of the donor's choice.
