George T. Gregory
George T. Gregory, 59, died
March 7, 1994 while on vacation in Hawaii. He received bachelor's and law degrees from Stanford and joined Stanford's legal staff in 1961. He retired as senior counsel emeritus in 1993. He also taught extradepartmental courses at the university for 10 years. He is survived by a sister, two nieces and two grandnieces.
Ernest F. "Bud" Hassbaum
Ernest F. "Bud" Hassbaum, 80, died
March 7, 1994 in Lodi, where he had moved five years ago after living in Menlo Park for 30 years. Born in St. Louis, he was raised in California. He served in the U.S. Army in Japan during World War II and then worked as an electrical engineer for several companies, including Lockheed Corp.'s Missiles and Space Division in Sunnyvale, retiring in 1970. He was a Mason and a member of SIRS, Stanford University Library Associates and the Palo Alto Men's Golf Group. He is survived by his wife, a son, a daughter and two grandchildren. Jeannette Smoyer Rust
Jeannette Smoyer Rust, a longtime Palo Alto resident, died
March 15, 1994. After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, she became a teacher. During World War II, she taught theater and produced plays at the Japanese internment camp at Tule Lake and then joined the Red Cross and served in France and Germany. She later worked for the Hoover Institution and the Palo Alto Unified School District, volunteered and was an active member of the First Congregational Church, where she sang in the choir. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Dee C. Rust of Palo Alto, and a sister. A memorial service will be held March 19 at 2 p.m. at First Congregational Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ecumenical Hunger Program.

Lillian P. Sherman, 89, a 30-year resident of Menlo Park, died
March 15, 1994 at Stanford Hospital. A native of Suffern, N.Y., she was a fine arts teacher. She is survived by two daughters, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Robert S. "Bob" Baer, 45, died
March 12, 1994 in Palo Alto of a heart attack. A Palo Alto resident for 20 years, he was vice president of Blackman and Flynn, a hotel renovation company. He is survived by his mother, Celeste Baer Baker of Palo Alto; a sister; three brothers, including James E. Baer and David S. Baer of Palo Alto; a niece, Lisa Baer; and four nephews, including Maxwell and Blake Baer of Palo Alto.

George E. Ferguson, 73, a retired maintenance man with the Lancing Corporation, died
March 17, 1994 at his home in Menlo Park. A native of Ohio and a resident of Menlo Park for the past 23 years, he is survived by his wife, Marion E. Betty Jean Meredith, 67, a 14-year resident of Palo Alto, died
of breast cancer in Palo Alto on March 12, 1994. A native of Golden, Colo., she is survived by three daughters, six grandchildren, a sister, a brother, five nieces and nephews, nine great nieces and nephews, 18 great-great nieces and nephews, and one great-great-great niece. Alice D. Thompson, 71, a retired librarian for Palo Alto High School, where she worked for 17 years, died
in Redwood City on March 17, 1994. A native of Louisiana and a 23-year resident of Menlo Park, she earned a master's degree in library science from San Jose State University. She is survived by two sons, two daughters, a brother and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Crippen & Flynn Chapel of Redwood City on March 26 at 2 p.m.
Dorothy Cook Foster
Dorothy Cook Foster, 84, a retired employee of Bechtel Corp. and the California Appellate Court, died
March 16, 1994 at Stanford Hospital. A native of Ocheyban, Iowa, she grew up in Palo Alto, graduating from Stanford University. A resident of Portola Valley, she was active in Planned Parenthood and the Nature Plant Society. She is survived by a sister, Elaine Cook of Portola Valley, a brother, a niece and nephew.
James L. Michael
James L. Michael, 77, died
March 16, 1994 at Stanford Hospital of pneumonia. A Palo Alto and Menlo Park resident for more than 40 years, he served in the U.S Army Air Corps from 1940-45. He graduated from Stanford University in 1948 with degrees in business and economics, and was a retired officer with Wells Fargo Bank. He is survived by two sons, including Mark D. Michael of Palo Alto, and a granddaughter, Sarah K. Michael of Palo Alto. Donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Salvation Army, or American Lung Association. An open house will be held at 60 Kirby Place, Palo Alto, on March 27 from 3 to 8 p.m.

Carr Baker Neel Jr., 73, died
March 18, 1994 at Stanford Hospital following a short illness. Born in San Francisco, he lived in Palo Alto all his life. He was a project manager and research scientist for the NASA Ames Research Center. A graduate of Palo Alto High and Stanford University, where he played on the tennis team, he was active in Boy Scouts of America. He is survived by a son, a daughter, a brother, five grandchildren and two cousins. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 1140 Cowper St., Palo Alto, on March 27 at 3 p.m.
