Marcella Chalkley Holmes, 91, a four-year Palo Alto resident, died
May 24, 1994. A native of Kansas, she attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence. After moving to New York City in 1924 she began a career as an editor and writer for Vogue and Glamour magazines and as a publicist for a variety of beauty firms, including Cheseborough-Ponds, Clearasil and Noxzema. She was the first beauty editor for Glamour when the magazine was introduced by Conde Nast in 1941. She was active in Republican politics and was elected committeewoman for the 18th Congressional District. She also served as president of Republican Women in Industry and Professions in New York during the 1960s. She is survived by two daughters, including Mary Burt Baldwin of Menlo Park; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Jack Phillip Minta
Jack Phillip Minta, 69, a 27-year resident of Menlo Park, died
May 4, 1994 in Port Townsend, Wash. He served in the U.S. Marines during World War II. He retired from the U.S. Geological Survey in 1979 after 32 years of service as a civil engineer. Lawrence J. Torcellini, 79, a 44-year resident of Palo Alto, died
May 25, 1994. A native of New Haven, Connecticut, he was a retired Captain of the U.S. Army, 34th Infantry Division. He was an active member of M.O.W.W. and retired from Harker Academy of San Jose. He is survived by two sons; a daughter; and three sisters. a memorial service will be held June 3 at St. Athanasuis Church, 160 Rengstorff Ave., Mountain View, CA. Wen C. Wang, 83, a 13-year resident of Atherton, died
May 25, 1994 after a short illness. A native of China, she was a homemaker. She is survived by four daughters, including Juna Lok of Atherton; a son; and nine grandchildren.
William R. Lawson Sr.
William R. Lawson Sr., 93, a general contractor and former mayor of Menlo Park, died
May 29, 1994. Born and raised in San Francisco, he was a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley. He was appointed by Franklin D. Roosevelt to be state administrator of the Works Progress Administration for California in 1939 and worked as a general contractor from 1945 to 1971. In 1952, he was appointed to the Menlo Park City Council and re-elected in 1956, 1960, 1964 and 1968. He was mayor from 1957 to 1969. He served as chairman of the West Bay Rapid Transit Board, chairman of the Local Agency Formation Commission of San Mateo County, and appointee to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission of the Association of Bay Area Governments. The recipient of the Menlo Park Chamber of Commerce Golden Acorn Award in 1975 and the Menlo Park Rotary Club outstanding citizen award in 1979, he was a member of the Menlo Park Town Club. He is survived by a son, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Harry V. Murphy
Harry V. Murphy, 61, a 30-year Palo Alto resident, died
May 20, 1994 of complications from multiple sclerosis. A poet and a painter, he was one of the owners of the original St. Michael's Alley in Palo Alto. He is survived by a daughter, a sister and two brothers.

Jacques Naar, 63, a 30-year resident of Palo Alto, died
May 25, 1994 after a long illness. A native of Greece, he was a senior engineering manager at SRI International in Menlo Park. He was educated at the University of Bruxelles and MIT. He is survived by his wife, Cecile Naar of Menlo Park; three sons; a brother; and three grandchildren. Jeanne C. Paltsits Wiley
Jeanne C. Paltsits Wiley, 72, a former resident of Palo Alto and Woodside, died
May 4, 1994 in Monterey after a long illness. A native of New York City and a former dance instructor, model and swimmer in the Billy Rose Aquacade at the 1938 New York World's Fair, she was a synchronized swimming coach in Palo Alto during the late '50s and '60s. She was also a member of the Palo Alto First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School. She is survived by her husband, two daughters, a son and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held June 12 at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 305 N. California Ave., Palo Alto. Contributions may be sent to a memorial in her name at the church.

May 28, 1994 after a short illness. A native of Massachusetts, he was a surgeon with Kaiser Permanente. He is survived by his wife, Jennie W. Wohler of Atherton; two sons, William Joseph Wohler of Atherton and John Thomas Wohler of Atherton; a daughter; and two brothers.
