Jane McDonald Erving, 82, a resident of Menlo Park for 22 years, died
Jan. 28, 1994. A Chicago native, she came to California with her family in 1943, living in Los Altos until 1951 and Atherton until 1972. She was a founding member of the Menlo-Atherton Auxiliary of Children's Home Society and enjoyed traveling with the Stanford University tours. She is survived by three sons, including John S. Erving and George S. Erving of Palo Alto; a daughter; three brothers, including George McDonald of Atherton; two sisters; 11 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ruth Jackson Hales
Ruth Jackson Hales, 83, a Menlo Park resident who lived in the area for more than 45 years, died
at Stanford Hospital of a heart attack on Feb. 6, 1994. A native of Ogden, Utah, she worked as a baker in the Palo Alto school district and later managed apartments in Menlo Park. She was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She is survived by a son; two daughters, including Marlene Meshinski of Palo Alto; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Charles Joseph Heyler
Charles Joseph Heyler, 60, a longtime resident of Portola Valley, died
Feb. 8, 1994 after a brief illness. A graduate of the University of Southern California and Stanford Law School, he practiced law in the Bay Area for 35 years. He is survived by his wife, Ann Heyler of Portola Valley; four sons; three stepchildren; six grandchildren; and a brother. William M. Land
William M. Land, 65, a chemical engineer, died
of cancer at home Feb. 5, 1994. A resident of Menlo Park for 25 years, he was a native of Michigan and a graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts. An employee of Raychem Corporation since 1968, he was an active member of the Ladera Community Church. He is survived by his wife, Jane Land of Menlo Park, and two sons, including John Land of Palo Alto. Bruce Carl Lyon
Bruce Carl Lyon, 55, a former Palo Alto resident, died
Feb. 6, 1994 in Truckee, where he had lived since July. A graduate of Palo Alto High School and Colorado College, he was an avid fly fisherman and skier. He was the grandson of early Palo Alto designer Pedro de Lemos. He is survived by his wife, Cherry Lyon of Portola Valley; a son; a daughter; and a sister, Phyllis Munsey of Palo Alto. Virginia Witherspoon Marlette
Virginia Witherspoon Marlette, 30, a Palo Alto native, died
on Feb. 4, 1994 in a bicycle accident while touring China. Born and raised in Palo Alto, she had been living with her husband in Chicago, where she taught middle school mathematics and science. She held degrees from St. Lawrence University in New York and National-Louis University in Illinois. An avid hiker, camper and geologist, she was the daughter of former City Council member Anne Witherspoon Tennyson. She is survived by her husband; her mother; two brothers; her grandmothers, including Mrs. John B. Rodgers of Portola Valley; her stepfather; and her stepsister.
Ivan McGinnis
Ivan McGinnis, 79, a resident of Menlo Park for more than 35 years, died
in Redwood City on Jan. 28, 1994. A native of Corvallis, Ore., he graduated from Oregon State University and worked for 41 years as a chemical engineer at Dupont, retiring in 1977. He was a member of the American Chemical Society and Menlo Park Presbyterian Church, and enjoyed photography, classical music and science. Helen G. Miner, 98, a retired nurse, died
Dec. 25, 1993. Born in Oregon, she graduated from the Stanford School of Nursing and worked as supervisor of nurses at the Stanford Convalescent Home for Children for many years. She is survived by a sister.
August Motmans
August Motmans, 94, a Palo Alto resident for 73 years, died
Jan. 22, 1994. A native of the Netherlands, he came to the United States in 1920 and had a long career as a builder in the area. He also served as superintendent of the maintenance department for the Palo Alto School District. He is survived by his wife, Johanna Motmans of Palo Alto; two sons; and two grandsons.
Anne Lilley Oborne
Anne Lilley Oborne, 89, a resident of Palo Alto for 60 years, died
in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., on Feb. 5, 1994. A native of Ohio, she was a member of St. Aloysius Church and Palo Alto YLI. She was a former paymaster at Emporium Stanford. She is survived by two daughters, eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Marie Hallson Stevenson
Marie Hallson Stevenson, 79, a longtime Palo Alto resident, died
Feb. 9, 1994. Born in Winnipeg, Canada, she came to Palo Alto as a child. She graduated from Palo Alto High School in 1932 and worked at the Palo Alto Co-op on California Avenue for many years. She enjoyed yoga and crafts, especially patchwork quilting. She had Alzheimer's disease for about six years and had participated in the Rosener House day care program for 2 1/2 years. She is survived by her husband, Gunnar Stevenson of Palo Alto; a son; a daughter; a granddaughter; and a sister. A memorial service will be held Feb. 12 at 3 p.m. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 600 Homer Ave., Palo Alto.
Susan Udell
Susan Udell, 31, a singer and songwriter, died
Feb. 2, 1994 at her home in Mountain View. She performed her folk-influenced music at numerous venues around the Bay Area, including twice-monthly shows at St. Michael's Art Cafe in Palo Alto, and had released two records. She struggled with endometriosis and chronic fatigue syndrome. She is survived by a son, her parents and three sisters. A memorial service will be held Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Hope and Church streets, Mountain View.
