Donald N. Ritchie
Donald N. Ritchie, 71, a former resident of Menlo Park, died
Aug. 17, 1994. A native of New Jersey, he was a member of the Flying Tigers in World War II and an engineer with Western Electric/Bell Labs. He is survived by his wife, Helen; two granddaughters, Lynn and Karen Van Antwerp of Menlo Park; and a sister. Contributions may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
E.F. "Bob" Barker
E.F. "Bob" Barker, 73, a retired Navy captain, died
Aug. 26, 1994 at his Palo Alto home. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., he graduated from of San Diego State College and the California Institute of Technology. He served in the Navy for 32 years, in combat, for which he was honored with the Bronze Star, and in technical management. A 20-year resident of Palo Alto, he was active in the Masons and the Shriners, as well as the Peninsula Retired Officers Association. He is survived by a daughter and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 31 at the Masonic Temple, 461 Florence St., Palo Alto. Theodore C. Cannis
Theodore C. Cannis, 62, a civil engineer who helped build many local projects, including the Portola Valley Ranch, died
Aug. 18, 1994 after a two-year bout with cancer. He was an active member and deacon of the Menlo Park Presbyterian Church who tried to to help others find faith through his experiences with cancer. A native of New York, he graduated from the Stanford University school of engineering, and then went to work for the engineering firm of Frahm, Edler and Cannis in Redwood City, where he worked for 38 years. He taught Sunday school and and donated his engineering skills to Habitat for Humanity. He is survived by his wife, Gail Cannis of Ladera; two sons, including Christopher Cannis of Ladera; a daughter; and four grandchildren. G. Kingsley Noble
G. Kingsley Noble, 70, of Portola Valley, died
July 20, 1994 of a heart attack. A native of of New York, he received his doctorate from Columbia University. He was a faculty member in linguistics and anthropology at San Jose State University from 1963 to 1982. After his retirement, he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the San Francisco Art Institute. His photographs were often exhibited at the Gallery House in Palo Alto. He is survived by two sons, Jonathan and Craigan Noble.
Marjorie Dickinson-Andersen
Marjorie Dickinson-Andersen, 75, a former resident of Palo Alto, died
Aug. 17, 1994 at home in Henderson, Nev., of bone cancer. She was a music teacher at Jordan Junior High School and conducted young singers at special events in Palo Alto. A native of Chicago, she earned her master's degree in music education at Stanford University. Memorial services will be held in Henderson on Sept. 3. She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Henry Andersen; a daughter, a son, a brother, two sisters and four grandchildren.
Georgia Thornton McGilvray
Georgia Thornton McGilvray, 61, a longtime resident of Palo Alto, died
Aug. 27, 1994 at Stanford Hospital. A native of Stockton, she taught at Wilbur, Hoover and Jordan junior high schools in Palo Alto for 33 years. She is survived by her husband, Malcolm C. James Shearer
James Shearer, 84, a 25-year resident of Menlo Park, died
Aug. 18, 1994 at University Branch Convalescent Hospital after a long illness. A native of Canada, he was a retired district purchasing agent for Bethlehem Steel. He was veteran of World War II and a member of the Menlo Park Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte P. Shearer of Menlo Park; three daughters; and three grandchildren.
Thelma Eiler Gunn
Thelma Eiler Gunn, a former resident of Palo Alto, died
Aug. 28, 1994. A native of Manitoba, Canada, she was an artist, teacher and the wife for 60 years of former Palo Alto Schools Superintendent Henry Martin Gunn, after whom Gunn High School was named. A graduate of the Oregon College of Education with a degree in art, at age 6 she had exhibited a painting at the World's Fair in San Francisco. Before coming to Palo Alto in 1950 she taught in a one-room school in Oregon. She is survived by a son, two daughters and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

James Mitchell, 72, a former resident of Menlo Park, died
of cancer Aug. 3, 1994 in Monterey. A California native, he was a district sales manager for the Continental Can Company for 30 years. He also worked as an independent sales representative until his retirement in 1990. He is survived by three daughters, Laurie Mitchell of Atherton, Carol Mitchell of Palo Alto and Diane Mitchell; a brother; and a grandson. Rhonda L. Porter
Rhonda L. Porter, 36, a former East Palo Alto resident, died
Sept. 3, 1994. A native of Mobile, Ala., she moved to California in 1963. She is survived by her mother, a son and a daughter. A funeral service will be held Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 1981 Pulgas Ave., East Palo Alto.
