Joseph "Joe" Schembri, 53, a longtime resident of East Palo Alto, died
Aug. 19, 1994 at Stanford Hospital. A native of Malta, he had worked for the First American Title Company for the last 15 years. In 1948, at the age of 7, he moved from Malta to East Palo Alto with his family, after which Schembri Lane is named. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Mary Schembri; three sons, Jerry, John and Jason of East Palo Alto; his parents; two brothers; and a large extended family.
Francis C. Waters
Francis C. Waters, 79, a 44-year resident of Menlo Park, died
Aug. 30, 1994 at Menlo Park Veteran's Hospital after a long illness. A native of Santa Rosa, he was a retired teacher who taught for the Blue Lake City School District. He is survived by a sister, six nieces and four nephews. A graveside service will be held Sept. 24 at 11 a.m. at the Greenwood Cemetery
in Arcata.
Marjorie C. Buckley
Marjorie C. Buckley, 73, a longtime resident of Palo Alto, died
Aug. 28, 1994 at home. A California native, she was an employee of Crocker National Bank for 30 years, and more recently was office manager for the Stanford Driving School. She is survived by a niece and a nephew.
L. Josephine Hawes
L. Josephine Hawes, 88, a resident of Los Altos who devoted more than 40 years to public health nursing, died
Sept. 4, 1994. A native of Riverside, she was retired as a nursing professor at Stanford and as supervisor of public health nursing for Santa Clara County. A graduate of Stanford University School of Nursing, she later earned her bachelor's degree from Stanford and a master's degree in Public Health Nursing from the University of Washington. She taught at Stanford for 17 years after working as a public health nurse for the War Relocation Authority in Manzanar and for the Alaska Health Department. She was an avid traveler and an active member for 25 years of Ladera Community Church in Portola Valley. She is survived by a sister, a brother and a niece. A memorial service is planned for Sept. 18 at 3 p.m. at the Ladera Community Church, 3300 Alpine Road, Portola Valley. Lillian Dudley Bushnell
Lillian Dudley Bushnell, 97, a 27-year resident of Palo Alto, died
Sept. 12, 1994 at her home in Lytton Gardens. She was an educator, involved in the Palo Alto Children's Theater, who helped develop Creative Dynamics for children. She was also a former counselor for Lockheed, one of the first women, and once hosted a award-winning radio show in Seattle for children. A graduate of the University of California, she did post graduate work at the University of Washington, where she later became the vice-president of the Institute for International Understanding through Students. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Roden of Palo Alto; two sons; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Louis G. Freitas
Louis G. Freitas Sr., 80, a 32-year resident of Menlo Park, died
Sept. 11, 1994 after a short illness. A native of Auburn, he was a janitor with American Building Maintenance and a World War II veteran. He is survived by his wife, Virginia R. Homer D. Hagstrum
Homer D. Hagstrum, 79, a resident of Menlo Park, died
Sept. 7, 1994 of cardiac arrest. A native of St. Paul, Minnesota, he was a retired physicist who had worked for Bell Laboratories in New Jersey for 45 years. An expert in surface physics, he developed technologies that helped Allied radar efforts in World War II. For his contributions to physics he was recognized with many awards and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Hagstrum of Menlo Park; a daughter; a son, Jonathan Hagstrum of Menlo Park; and two brothers. Tuyetmai T. Nguyen, 50, a resident of Palo Alto, died
Sept. 10, 1994 after a long illness. A native of Vietnam she was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband, Luan Phan; sons Nhatlinh N. Phan, Hailinh N. Phan, Nguyenlinh N. Phan, and Doanvien N. Phan of Palo Alto; and daughters Nguyetlinh N. Phan and Quyenlinh N. Phan of Palo Alto.
Dermot Alexis O'Sullivan
Dermot Alexis O'Sullivan, 65, a resident of Atherton, died
Sept. 11, 1994 at Stanford Hospital. A native of Cork, Ireland, he was a chemical engineer. He had recently returned to Atherton to retire after a 20-year career in England with the Chemical and Engineering News. He is survived by his wife, Beverly O'Sullivan of Atherton; three daughters; and two sons. Florence VanDenberg, 96, a former resident of Menlo Park, died
