Oct. 10, 1994 at home. An employee of the Gillette Company for 24 years, he is survived by his wife, Linda Archibald; a son, Ben Archibald; and a daughter, Kate Archibald, all of Palo Alto; his mother; and two sisters. A memorial service will be held Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 1985 Louis Road, Palo Alto.

Nathaniel P. Gardner Jr., 83, a resident of Menlo Park, died
Oct. 6, 1994 after a long illness. Born in New Jersey, he attended Princeton and Wesleyan Universities. He was a former vice president of National Surety Corp. of New York and later a corporate bond specialist in San Mateo. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy T. Gardner of Menlo Park; two daughters, Linda Jeans and Susan Turner; and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Oct. 16 at 2 p.m., at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 600 Colorado Ave., Palo Alto.
Laura Jane Goldstein
Laura Jane Goldstein, 53, a former resident of Menlo Park and Palo Alto, died
Oct. 3, 1994 of cancer at her home in Alexandria, Va., where she had moved in 1988. Born in Columbia, Mo., she grew up in Menlo Park and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley. She was active in community affairs as a member of the Architectural Review Board of Palo Alto and as volunteer coordinator for the Peninsula Conservation Center. She also was president of the League of Women Voters of Palo Alto and served two terms on the board of directors of the League of Women Voters of California. While in Palo Alto, she worked for Stanford Law School; more recently, she worked at the George Washington University National Law Center. She is survived by a brother, Robert Marsh. Elizabeth "Betty" C.E. Hays, 91, a resident of downtown Palo Alto for more than 80 years, died
Oct. 5, 1994 in Los Gatos. A graduate of the Harker School, she worked for many years as a clerk with the records bureau at Stanford University. She was a longtime active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, PEO and All Saints' Episcopal Church. She is survived by three nieces, including Louise Hays Doolittle of Palo Alto; a nephew; and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.

Mary D. Manfredi, 83, a resident of Palo Alto for 65 years, died
Oct. 8, 1994 in Fairfield. Born in Ohio, she is survived by two sons, Paul Manfredi of Palo Alto and Philip Manfredi; a sister, Angela Flanagan of Palo Alto; a brother, Philip Deredi; and five grandchildren.

of melanoma Sept. 30, 1994 at her home. Born in Ukiah, she graduated from Scripps College and Stanford University. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Robert Odell Jr. of Palo Alto; three children, Hindi Morland, Timothy Odell and Joshua Odell; and a brother. Anne Marion Smith
Anne Marion Smith, 85, an 18-year resident of Menlo Park, died
Oct. 5, 1994. A native of Illinois, she was raised in Fort Worth, Texas, and graduated from the University of Texas. After teaching school, she studied at Baylor School of Nursing in Dallas and became a registered nurse, working at Baylor Hospital and Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco. During World War II she served in the Women's Army Corps, retiring as a captain. After the war she taught in Berkeley Unified School District. SHe is survived by three sisters, and nieces and nephews.

Cornelius W. Burger
Cornelius W. Burger, 73, a 34-year resident of Los Altos Hills, died
Oct. 19, 1994 after a long illness. He was a retired salesman for North American Rockwell and a member of the Chi Psi fraternity, Sirs #51 of Los Altos and several golf clubs. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jean W. Burger of Los Altos Hills; a son; three daughters; a sister; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service is planned for Oct. 22 at the Covenant Presbyterian Church, 670 E. Meadow Drive, Palo Alto, at 2 p.m. Donations to the church are preferred.

Oct. 14, 1994 in New York City. Born in Palo Alto, she attended the University of Southern California and the Manhattan School of Music. She was a pianist for the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. She is survived by her mother, Doris E. Dahlgren of Palo Alto; her grandmother; a sister; and a brother.
