Alta N. Duerkop, 78, a former Palo Alto resident, died
April 8, 1994 in Sonora. A graduate of the LDS Business College in Salt Lake City, she was a secretary for the commanding officer at Fort Douglas. She moved to Palo Alto in 1947 and was active in the PTA, Peninsula Volunteers and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She is survived by a son, two sisters, a brother and two granddaughters. Services will be held at 1 p.m. April 13 at the chapel of Roller, Hapgood and Tinney, 980 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto.
Joseph L. Kastigar
Joseph L. Kastigar, 76, died
March 29, 1994 after an 18-year battle with cancer. A native of Illinois, he came to California in 1941 and lived in Palo Alto for 45 years. He had his own accounting practice and he served in the U.S. Army for four years during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Helen Kastigar of Palo Alto; a son; two daughters; and five grandsons. Theresa G. Lopez, 82, died
April 9, 1994 at her home in East Palo Alto after a long illness. A homemaker, she had lived in East Palo Alto for 10 years. A native of Santa Paula, she enjoyed bingo, gardening and sewing. She is survived by two sons, a daughter, a brother, a sister, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. April 13 at the Church of the Nativity, 210 Oak Grove Ave., Menlo Park.

Mary Lou Nelson, 90, a 36-year resident of Palo Alto, died
April 7, 1994 at the Ridgewood Care Center in Los Altos. A native of Kentucky, she was a member of the Lucie Stern Volunteer Group and the sewing circle at the First Congregational Church of Palo Alto. She is survived by two daughters, a sister, a brother, six grandchildren and a great-grandchild. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. April 13 at the First Congregational Church of Palo Alto, 1985 Louis Road, Palo Alto.

March 25, 1994. A native of Minnesota, she worked as a public health nurse in Palo Alto and was an active member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Menlo Park. Winifred Barton Nichols Carr, 89, a former resident of Palo Alto and Atherton, died
April 4, 1994 in Carmel Valley. A graduate of Stanford University, she was active in the Sigma Kappa Sorority, Children's Health Council and Freedom's Foundation at Valley Forge. She is survived by a brother; a sister; seven children, including Barbara Acevedo of Menlo Park and Dorothy Parker of Palo Alto; 17 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

April 13, 1994 at Stanford. A native of Missouri, she was a waitress at the Redwood City Stickney's on El Camino Real. She is survived by her husband, Bob Hardesty of Menlo Park; a son; a daughter; two stepdaughters; two sisters; and 10 step-grandchildren.

April 15, 1994 in Los Altos Hills. Michael Gordon Head, 52, a former Palo Alto resident, died
April 20, 1994 of cancer. A 1960 graduate of Palo Alto High School, He served as a lieutenant of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Melville Ernest Lawrence, 85, died
April 23, 1994 in Palo Alto. A native of Kentucky, he was a member of SIRS, a life member and master of Masonic Sunbeam Lodge #428, and an honorary Kentucky colonel. He is survived by his wife, Irene Lawrence of Menlo Park; a son; a daughter; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Otis 'Bud' Renalds
Otis "Bud" Renalds, 70, a 28-year resident of Palo Alto, died
April 18, 1994. A native of New Jersey, he served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, flying more than 52 combat missions. He was hired by Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank and later became a research scientist with the Missiles and Space Program. His inventions can be found on all jet planes that fly today. He was also an adviser to graduate students at Stanford on a weather monitoring program. He was a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics, Astronautics and Aerospace; the Instrument Society of America; the American Astronautical Society; and various civic groups. He is survived by his wife of 48 years; five daughters, including Amy Renalds of Palo Alto; three sons; a sister; and 14 grandchildren. Stefanie Sara Sucher, 76, a former resident of Palo Alto and Menlo Park, died
April 19, 1994 in Hayward. A native of Germany, she immigrated to the United States in 1939. She was a past president of the Eden Chapter of Hadassah as well as a life member. She was also a past president of the Alameda County Jewish Federation. She is survived by a sister; two sons, including Stan Sucher of Palo Alto; three daughters; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Mark Edward Tillson, 41, died
