Mark Werry Childress, 49, a longtime Palo Alto resident, died
of a heart attack Sept. 19 after coaching an AYSO soccer game. A graduate of San Jose State University, he moved to Palo Alto in 1973 and took a position with Werry Electric Shop, a firm founded by his grandfather. At the time of his death, he was president of Serra Energy Inc., an oil and gas concern in Palo Alto. He was an avid golfer and served on the finance committee at Palo Alto Hills Golf and Country Club. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Childress of Palo Alto; two sons, Mark McKenzie and Jamie Bruce Childress of Palo Alto; his parents, John and Kathryn Childress of Palo Alto; and a brother, Kevin C. John Marshall Day
John Marshall Day, 61, a longtime resident of Menlo Park, died
Sept. 17. After earning bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Utah he attended the university's school of law, where he was a member of the Law Review staff. He went on to gain a law degree from the University of Santa Clara. He taught for one year at the University of Utah before joining Foothill College in 1964 as a sociologist, specializing in the sociology of law and religion. He was dean of Foothill's social science division from 1975 to 1989. He was a captain in the U.S. Naval Reserve, serving 30 years. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Groome Day of Menlo Park; a daughter, Margaret Elizabeth Day of Menlo Park; a sister, Trudy Edvalson of Salt Lake City; and a brother, William Day of Salt Lake City. Hester Dymond
Hester Dymond, 81, a resident of Menlo Park, died
Sept. 23.
She was born
in Lebanon, Tenn., and moved to San Francisco in the 1940s.
She lived there until four years ago, when she moved to Menlo Park.
She is survived by 10 nieces and nephews. Services have been held.

William 'Buck' Eberle
William "Buck" Eberle, 73, a 44-year resident of Palo Alto died
Sept. 24. He served as an Army Air Corps lieutenant in World War II and the Korean conflict. Eberle graduated from Northwestern University in 1948 and then moved to California. He worked in advertising for the San Francisco Chronicle for 21 years and later worked for the McGraw-Hill Publishing Company. He was active in the Palo Alto Tennis Club and the Palo Alto Bridge Club. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary East Eberle; three daughters, Jeanne Aufmuth of Palo Alto, Dale Muegenburg of Ventura and Joanne Eberle-Roman of Lake Oswego, Ore.; and five granddaughters.

James A. Graham
James A. Graham, 85, a former longtime resident of Menlo Park and Palo Alto, died
Sept. 13 in Lincoln City, Ore. He was born
in Pennsylvania and graduated from Harvard Law School. He became a tax attorney and special agent in the FBI before serving as a pilot in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Moving to the Bay Area in the early 1950s, he worked for J. Earl May & Co. in Palo Alto before setting up his own company, Palo Alto Research. This ultimately led to the establishment of Flow of Capital, a technical stock market service for institutional money managers. He was among the first to use computers in the field of technical research, developing proprietary software for demand and supply analysis. He is survived by his wife, Winifred Graham of Salishan, Ore.; a son, Alex Graham of Belmont; a sister, Charlotte Dight of Kansas City, Mo.; and two granddaughters. Services have been held. Virginia Cromwell Jacobson
Virginia Crowell Jacobson died
Sept. 17 at Lytton Gardens Health Center in Palo Alto, after six months with leukemia. She was born
in Los Angeles and moved to Alaska after her marriage. In 1963 she moved to Palo Alto and worked in the bookkeeping department of the Palo Alto Medical Clinic until her retirement in 1990. She served as secretary for the Peninsula Gem and Geology Society for the past 12 years. She is survived by a nephew, a niece and three grandnephews. No services will be held. Memorial donations can be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

William H. Lacey Jr.
William H. Lacey Jr., 75, a 25-year resident of Atherton, died
of pneumonia at his home Sept. 19, after a long battle with cancer. He was born
in New York City and graduated from the Valley Forge Military Academy, Brown University and the School of Law at the University of Virginia. He served as a captain in the infantry during World War II, and as an aide to Maj. Gen. Edwin P. Parker, Commander of European Forces, at the end of the war. He moved to San Francisco in 1960, becoming a real estate developer. A resident of Atherton from 1960, he served on the town Planning Commission. He was a director of the Menlo Park Lions Pop Warner Youth Football organization and a volunteer at Opportunities Industrialization Center West in East Palo Alto. He was also a member of the Menlo Circus Club and the Olympic Club in San Francisco. He is survived by his wife, Margaret C. Lacey of Palo Alto; and two sons, William Henry Thaddeus Lacey III of Palo Alto, and James Griffin Lacey of Campbell. Services have been held. Margaret L. Minasian
Margaret L. Minasian, 91, died
Sept. 17 in Portola Valley. She was born
in Colusa and graduated from the College of the Pacific (now the University of the Pacific) in 1928.
She worked as a sales promotion manager for the Johns Manville Corporation in California and on the East Coast for 37 years.
Upon her retirement, she moved to the Sequoias residential home in Portola Valley, where she was a resident for 25 years.
She is survived by a brother, David Minasian of Oroville.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Oct. 10 at the Valley Presbyterian Church in Portola Valley.

Henry J. Moore
Henry J. Moore, 70, a 36-year resident of Palo Alto, died
Sept. 21 in Utah from an apparent heart attack. He was born
in Albuquerque, N.M., and grew up in Salt Lake City. He graduated from the University of Utah and received a master's degree and a doctorate from Stanford University. He worked for the U.S. Geological Survey as both an undergraduate and new graduate, returning to join its fledgling astrogeology program in 1960. He became an advisor to NASA and helped to train Apollo astronauts in "crater geology" prior to the first moon landings. He also helped to select the landing site for the Viking that landed on Mars in 1976. He retired from the USGS in 1994, but continued to work for the agency in a "scientist emeritus" position. He also served as a consultant to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Following the landing of the Mars Pathfinder in July 1997, he helped to interpret the photos and other data being sent back. He was the author of many scientific publications, and in 1986 received the Department of the Interior meritorious service award as a leading authority on the physical character of planetary surfaces. He also received the NASA award for public service after the Pathfinder mission. He is survived by his wife, Patsy Ann Moore of Palo Alto; two sons, Donald Moore of San Francisco and Daniel Moore of Uganda; a daughter, Laura Moore of Salt Lake City; and two sisters, Cynthia Fehr and Elizabeth Jean Eliason, both of Salt Lake City. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 10 at the First United Methodist Church, 625 Hamilton Ave., Palo Alto. Ann Plaw
Ann Plaw, 83, a longtime resident of Palo Alto, died
Sept. 21 at Palo Alto Nursing Center.
She was born
in St. Paul, Minn., and attended Smith College and the University of Minnesota.
In 1962 she moved to Los Altos, working as secretary to the dean of Stanford Medical School for 10 years.
In her second career, she designed and hand smocked girls' dresses, which she sold under the label of "Granny Annie" at the Palo Alto Senior Center and children's dress shops.
For 26 years she volunteered helping people recover from alcoholism.
She is survived by two daughters, Karen Lindquist Lemes of Los Altos Hills and Kitty Lindquist Peterson of Diamond Springs; a son, Eric Lindquist of Kittery, Maine; two sisters, Jean Weeks of Palo Alto, and Sally Mixer of Los Altos; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Services have been held.

Margaret J. Richardson
Margaret J. Richardson, 99, a 46-year resident of Palo Alto, died
Sept. 12. She was a volunteer for the March of Dimes and for the Red Cross during World Wars I and II.
She was also a leader for Campfire Girls and Brownie Scouts, and a member of the Palo Alto Republican Women's Club, the Stanford Mother's Club, the Palo Alto Art Club and St. Mark's Episcopal Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Mary Lee Eilers of Los Altos; a sister, Anna Blake Lincoln Ellis of Santa Barbara; five granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren.
Donations may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
