Lillian E. Peterson, 89, a 27-year resident of Palo Alto, died
Oct. 18. A native of Lu Verne, Iowa, she was a homemaker, renowned locally as a baker of bread and pastries. She was a member of the Young Ladies Institute and attended Mass at both St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Albert the Great Catholic churches. She is survived by a son, Gordon Peterson of Palo Alto; four sisters, Leona Bartley of Humboldt, Iowa, Florence Darby of Algona, Iowa, Vera Hansen of Union Grove, Wis., and Alysmae Wildin of Owatonna, Minn.; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Services have been held. Helen E. Wolterstorff
Helen E. Wolterstorff, 84, a retired teacher and former resident of Palo Alto, died
Oct. 19 in Sunnyvale. Born in Springfield, Mo., she moved to Palo Alto in the late 1930s. She earned a master's degree in education from Stanford University and taught for 22 years at Crescent Park School in Palo Alto and Escondido Elementary School on the Stanford campus. She was a member of San Jose Symphony Auxiliary, Retired Teachers of Mid-Peninsula, Stanford Alumni Association, Republican Women's Association and Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. She is survived by a son, Norman Paul of Nipomo; a daughter, Lorraine Paul of Santa Clara; a brother, Alfred Exner of Huntington Beach; a granddaughter; and a great-granddaughter. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 12770 Saratoga Ave., Saratoga. Donations may be made to San Jose Symphony or Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.

Mary DeWolf Cole
Mary DeWolf Cole, 83, a former resident of Palo Alto, died
Oct. 25 in Los Altos. She was born
in Chicago, and moved to California in 1941, where she became one of the first women inspectors in aircraft manufacturing. She later came to the Bay Area to work for Varian Associates, where she stayed for 20 years. She lived in Palo Alto for 16 years before moving to Los Altos for 26 years. She is survived by a daughter, Diane Downs of Los Altos; and five grandchildren. No services will be held. Donations may be made to the American Diabetes or Cancer Societies.

William Dean Hilborn
William Dean Hilborn, 68, a resident of Palo Alto for seven years, died
Oct. 28. He taught music at Portola Valley School for 20 years before his retirement about 15 years ago. In the early 1960s he played piano for three years with Tommy Dorsey's band. He is survived by two sons, Will Hilborn and Tim Hilborn, both of Woodside; and a sister, Elizabeth Knoll of Milwaukee. Services have yet to be arranged. John Irven Ragan
John Irven Ragan, 82, a former resident of Menlo Park, died
Oct. 13. A native of Cairo, Ga., he was a carpenter for over 50 years and was a member of the Carpenters Union No. 217 of Foster City. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945. He and his wife, Lois, moved to Menlo Park from Redwood City in 1962, and remained there until 1978. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He is survived by his wife, Lois Ragan of Paradise; a daughter, Sandra Clark of Rescue; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Services have been held.

Kenneth W. Black
Kenneth W. Black, 78, a resident of Palo Alto for 30 years, died
April 22 at the Lou-Del Health Care Center in Forest Grove., Ore. He was born
in 1920 in Coos Bay, Oregon. As a young child, he moved with his family to California, where he received his education in Burlingame and San Jose. He moved to Palo Alto in 1955. In 1985, he moved to Oregon, settling in the Hillsboro community. He lived in Hillsboro until 1997, when he moved to Forest Grove. He followed in his father's footsteps and pursued a career as a plumber. He was a member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 393 for 50 years. He loved rocks, and enjoyed sharing his love for rocks, gems and minerals with his family. Through the years, he took his family on many rock hunts. He enjoyed gardening and beachcombing. Following his retirement, he enjoyed volunteering at his grandchildren's school. He is survived by his two daughters, Merna Black of Palo Alto, and Wendy Fogg-Holcomb of Hillsboro, Ore.; a brother, Loren Black of Merlin, Ore.; two sisters, Dorothy Stack of Orinda and Marilyn Glenk of Twentynine Palms; and two grandsons. Constance "Connie" McIntire Pearson Carpenter, 57, a resident of Palo Alto for 50 years, died
February 5 of renal failure due to diabetes. She was born
in Palo Alto in 1940, and attended Mayfield and Herbert Hoover Elementary Schools, Jordan Junior High School, and Palo Alto High School. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband, Richard Carpenter of Wilmington; five daughters, Debra Marotta of Streamwood, Ill., Lisa M. Bates of Palo Alto, Sally Schreiner and Pamela Sneed, both of Lawndale, and Nicole Garcia of Pequot Lakes, Minn.; twelve grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Michael N. Chetkovich
Michael N. Chetkovich, 81, a resident of Atherton for 20 years, died
April 21. A native of Angels Camp, Calif., and the son of Yugoslav immigrants, he received a bachelor's degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1939, and a master's degree in 1940. After graduation, he joined the San Francisco accounting firm of McLaren, Goode, West & Co. In 1942, he received the Forbes Medal of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants for scoring the highest grades in the state's CPA examination that year. From 1942 to 1946, he served as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy. He became a partner with McLaren in 1950 and, in 1952, became partner in charge of the San Francisco office when the company merged with Deloitte Haskins & Sells. He was Chairman of the American Institute of CPAs in 1976-77 and received its Gold Medal for distinguished service in 1982. After retiring from DH&S;, he served as director of American International Group, McDonnell Douglas and Phillips Petroleum. He also served as a member of the Consultant's Panel of the Comptroller General of the United States and on the American Bar Association's Commission on Tax Compliance. In addition to being appointed regents' professor at the Haas School of Business and serving as the school's director of external affairs and special consultant to the Dean, he was chairman of the University of California at Berkeley Foundation Board of Trustees and a director and chief financial officer of International House. An endowed chair at the business school was established in his name in 1978. He also received the University's Alumnus of the Year Award in 1985 and the Chancellor's Award in 1986. He volunteered for several organizations, including service as chairman of the Executive Service Corps of Northern California, and a member of the Advisory Board of the Council on Financial Aid to Education, the Business Advisory Council of Religion in American Life, and the National Advisory Council of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. He is survived by his wife, Alice Chetkovich of Atherton; two daughters, Carol Chetkovich of Boston and Kathy Chetkovich of Boulder Creek; two sons, John Chetkovich of Los Angeles and Mark Chetkovich of Santa Cruz; and one granddaughter. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 17, at 3 p.m. in the Wells Fargo Room of the University of California at Berkeley Haas School of Business. Virginia N. Conway, 84, a resident of Atherton for 31 years, died
May 2. She was a homemaker. Mildred Ohmie 'Micky' Corbett
Mildred Ohmie "Micky" Corbett, 79, a resident of Palo Alto for 49 years, died
April 12 of heart failure. She was born
in Herington, Kan., in 1918 and grew up in the German-American communities of rural Eastern Kansas. Following her graduation from high school in 1936, during the depths of the Depression, she moved to Denver to find employment. She was married
in Denver and her first son was born
there in 1940. The family moved to San Francisco in 1943, where her second son was born
in 1945. In 1949, the family moved to Palo Alto. Her third son was born
in Palo Alto in 1953. Her activities included church, many charitable interests and a passion for quilting and gardening. She loved to read and write, and maintained correspondence with pen pals all over the world. She had just recently completed a trip to New Zealand, where she had visited with members of one of her favorite organizations, the 1918 Club. At the age of 40, she enrolled at Foothill College the year the school opened its doors. After receiving her associate's degree from Foothill, she became one of the early staff members at her alma mater. She remained at Foothill until her retirement from the registrar's office in 1981. She is survived by three sons, Franklin Jr. of Berkeley, A. Christopher of Miami Beach, Fla., and James Michael of Darby, Mont.; a sister, Lillie J. Adams of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and three brothers, Raymond Ohmie of Seattle, and Robert John Ohmie and Floyd Eugene Ohmie, both of Kansas. Services have been held.
