Jose Gilbert Castellanos, 66, died
June 14 in Menlo Park at the Veteran's Administration hospice. A fourth-generation Palo Altan, he served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War and also earned a bachelor's degree in commercial art from San Jose State University. He later worked as a commercial artist and small-plane flight instructor and pilot. He was a skilled craftsman who sold his own creations at art fairs. He is survived by his wife Pixie Couch of Menlo Park and a son, Gabriel Castellanos, also of Menlo Park. Services have been held. Sada Emily Hulslander
Sada Emily Hulslander, 102, died
June 10 in Palo Alto. Born in Oswego, New York, she was raised in Minnesota before finally settling in Palo Alto for the past 30 years. She moved here after visiting her daughter who had already settled in Palo Alto, and immediately fell in love with the city. She often took long walks as she ran her errands in order to enjoy the beauty of Palo Alto. She enjoyed art, poetry and language and was known for her poetic rhyming letters as well as for her paintings. Her husband and two of her children preceded her in death. She is survived by daughter Gail Kline of Palo Alto; son Lee Hulslander of Rosemount, Minn.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held June 26 at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church at the corner of Homer and Webster streets, Palo Alto.

Joan Pearl McDonald
Joan Pearl McDonald, 76, a former resident of Palo Alto, died
June 6 at a Chico hospital. She was born
in 1922 in Indianapolis, Ind. She moved to California as a child, was raised in Palo Alto and graduated from Castilleja High School in 1941. In 1943, she married
Donald Moon in Palo Alto. She married
again in 1960, in Reno, Nev., to Clifford McDonald. She relocated to Orland in 1978 and settled in Chico in 1983. She traveled extensively throughout the United States for the last 15 years. She enjoyed conducting craft classes at the various mobile home parks at which she stayed. She is survived by her husband, Clifford McDonald of Chico; two daughters, Donna Bjork-Auger of Palo Alto and Cheryl Alaways of Chico; two sons, Jim Moon and Tom McDonald, both of Chico; two step-daughters, Phylice Jensen of Fair Oaks and Nadine Lyon of Union City, Tenn.; one sister, Lucille Moreno of Santa Clara; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Services have been held. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home.

Donald J. Moore
Donald J. Moore, 74, died
June 10 in Palo Alto. He served as a paratrooper in World War II and later earned a degree in recreation and physical education from San Jose State University. He worked for the city of Palo Alto for 30 years. He started as a playground leader and eventually became administrator of social and community services. After retirement, he became active in the South Palo Alto Optimist Club and played a large part in running their Boys' Club Program. He enjoyed nature photography and had some of his photos published in Outdoor California. He is survived by his wife, Betty Moore of Palo Alto; two daughters, Sally Moore of San Jose and Pam Magginetti of Auburn; and a grandson. Services have been held. George Morello
George Morello, 70, died
June 15 at the Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz. He lived in the Bay Area, including Los Altos Hills, for 20 years. He worked as a sales manager with Mayflower Moving and Storage Co. for 40 years. Throughout his life he belonged to several organizations, such as the Elks Lodge, the Sunnyvale Rotary Club and the Aptos S.I.R.S. He was an accomplished cook and enjoyed gardening in his spare time. He is survived by his wife, Linda Morello of Aptos; two sons, Bill and David Morello, both of Santa Cruz; a daughter, Mary Squires of Aptos; and four grandchildren. Services have been held. Louise Renfrew
Louise Renfrew, 64, a resident of Palo Alto for 20 years, died
in San Francisco on June 15. She was active in the Junior League of Palo Alto for 30 years as well as the PTA. She was also involved in the Garden Club of Palo Alto and was an avid tennis player and runner. She is survived by three daughters, Anne Lepesant of Los Angeles, Cate Blakeseley of Portland, Ore., and Meg Renfrew of San Francisco; one son, Bruce Renfrew of Redwood City; and 6 granddaughters. Elmus Ruff
Elmus "Lin" Ruff, 81, a resident of the Menlo Park area for 51 years, died
June 10 at Stanford Hospital. He was a native of Stockton. After graduating from the University of California at Davis, he took up an interest in flying. Before World War II, he entered the Civilian Pilot Training Program, and during the war he became a flight instructor for Army cadets at the Mississippi Institute of Aeronautics at Jackson, Miss., and later at Souther Field in Americus, Ga. In 1945, he joined TWA and flew the DC-3, DC-4, Martin 404, all Constellations and the Convair 880. He retired a 30-year captain in 1974. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mildred Ruff of Menlo Park; two daughters, Carol L. Woodward of Carson City, Nev., and Jeanette Tranberg of San Jose; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Private family services will be held. Dorothy Ames
Dorothy Imogene Lanier Ames, 88, a longtime resident of Palo Alto, died
June 9 at University Convalescent Hospital in Menlo Park after a lengthy illness. She was born
in 1910 in Nashville, Tenn., but attended elementary and high school in Phoenix, Ariz. She received a teaching credential in 1932 from Arizona State University. She and her husband, Edward, were married
in 1932, after he graduated from Stanford University. The couple honeymooned in Palo Alto. After residing in the Northwest, where Edward was in business and sales, the couple returned to Palo Alto in 1950. She served as a volunteer at the Allied Arts Guild in Menlo Park for 25 years. Lawrence W. Bruce, 91, a resident of Atherton for 30 years, died
from natural causes at his home on May 17. He was a native of Springfield, Ore. He worked as a representative for Union Oil Company. Webster Jones Jr.
Webster Jones Jr., 84, a resident of the Palo Alto/Menlo Park area for more than 40 years, died
May 24 in Santa Barbara. He was born
in San Rafael in 1913, and attended private elementary schools and Tamalpais High School, where he distinguished himself both athletically and academically. He then attended Stanford University, where he was a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. He was Head Yell Leader for two years in which Stanford went to the Rose Bowl. His acrobatics and booming voice charged up the student body and rallied the team to victory. Upon his graduation from Stanford in 1937, he did some traveling around the country and then went to work in 1938 as a Marine Underwriter for Fireman's Fund Insurance in San Francisco, where he continued to move up the corporate ladder until his retirement in 1979. At the outset of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and became a lieutenant commander and head gunnery officer on troop transports in the South Pacific. He set down roots in Menlo Park and Palo Alto, where he and his wife, Jean, raised three children. They traveled extensively for most of the past 20 years. After his wife died
in 1994, he moved to Santa Barbara to spend time with his children and enjoy a warmer climate. He loved wild animals, and his favorite adventure vacation was a three-week safari to Africa with many of his Stanford friends. He also had a passion for golf. He is survived by a son, Webster "Skip" Jones of Tarzana; two daughters, Alicia Jones James of Bishop and Paige Jones Kelleher of Goleta; and five grandchildren. He will be buried
in a private family ceremony next to his wife.

Jessie Locke Howell Landsdale
Jessie Locke Howell Landsdale, 94, a resident of Palo Alto for 18 years, died
June 2 in Sunnyvale. She was born
in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1903, and lived in many countries before moving to Westchester County, New York. An alumna of Barnard College, she worked as assistant to the Borough President of Manhattan, assistant to the director of the U.S.O. during World War II, assistant to the president of Sarah Lawrence College and as a librarian for the National Council of YMCAs. She was an accomplished musician, performing in many singing roles, and also in concerts as a pianist. She spent many years in New York City, in Rochester, N.Y., and in Athens, Greece. She is survived by a daughter, Jacqueline Howell Peterson of Palo Alto; two step-sons, H. Parker Lansdale of Sarasota, Fla., and Bruce Lansdale of Aptos; a sister, Joan Locke Brown of Orleans, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Services will be private.
