John David McCaffrey, 70, a professor at Stanford University, died
May 20. A native Californian, he was a 1946 graduate of Lowell High School. He earned his bachelor's degree at San Francisco State University, his master's degree at the University of Chicago, and his Ph.D at Stanford University. An anthropologist of art, early curiosity led him to an extended study of eidetic artists residing and working in San Francisco. Fascinated with what he saw, eidetic imagery became his professional focus. He traveled to Australia, where he spent two years living among Aborigines while researching their eidetikers. Later, in Africa, while on the faculty at the University of Zambia, he investigated eidetic imagery among artists. His spirit grew, also, in dedication to writing poetry and teaching. He is survived by a daughter, Caitlin McCaffrey of New York; and a son, Sean McCaffrey. At a later date, when his ashes--following his wishes--are scattered from a boat into the Pacific, friends and family will be invited to celebrate his life.

Kay Brostrom
Kay Brostrom, 56, the "right hand" to four Palo Alto school superintendents, died
on Jan. 13 in her Saratoga home, after a struggle with brain cancer. Jim Brown, former Palo Alto school superintendent said of Kay, "Kay Brostrom was much more than someone who worked for Palo Alto's school superintendents. She was a truly exceptional person whose all-too-short life touched many people in many different ways. Her passing came as a shock to many who didn't know she was seriously ill and left those of us who knew her with a deep sense of loss and wonderful memories." She had many interests and many jobs: at different times in her life she had been a student advisor, talented musician, tap dancer, world traveler, and even "starred" in an exercise aerobics video. Brown said, "Her energy, enthusiasm and talents were almost boundless. All this and she would still label a favorite bottle of wine, 'Chateau Nonchalant.'" She is survived by her husband, Ed of Saratoga, four stepchildren, and her brother Doug Christiansen of Salt Lake City. Private services were held Jan. 17 at Saratoga Presbyterian Church. Donations may be made to the Midpeninsula Home Care and Hospice, 201 San Antonio Circle, Suite 135, Mountain View, CA 94040.
