Todd Leland Smith, 32, died
Sept. 21, 1994 at his home in Palo Alto. A native of San Francisco, he lived in Palo Alto for more than 20 years. He graduated from Cubberley High School and attended San Diego and San Jose State Universities. He managed the Winter Lodge skating rink for 14 years and also worked at Shoreline Amphitheatre as a technician. He was active as a player and coach in local soccer leagues. He is survived by his wife, Karen Filipelli Smith of Palo Alto; and a brother. A memorial service will be held Oct. 1 at 3 p.m. at Roller, Hapgood and Tinney, 980 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto.
Harry Louis Millet
Harry Louis Millet, 77, a longtime resident of Palo Alto, died
Nov. 20, 1994 at Sonoma Valley Hospital. After graduating from Palo Alto High School and San Jose State he started a 46-year career in the newspaper business in 1936 as a carrier for the Palo Alto Times and worked his way up to chief executive officer of Peninsula Newspapers Inc., owner of the Times. In 1978 he sold the paper to the Chicago Tribune, and he retired in 1981 to Sonoma. He briefly interrupted his career in 1943 to join the Army Air Corps. He was trained as a B-17 bomber pilot and flew 31 combat missions during 1944 over Europe. For a raid on Memmingen, Germany, his 483rd bombardment group was rewarded the presidential unit citation. He is survived by his wife, Billie; a son; a daughter; and three stepchildren.
Elsa Lasnier Phillips
Elsa Lasnier Phillips, 85, a Palo Alto resident since 1940, died
Dec. 16, 1994 of Alzheimer's disease. Born in Minneapolis and raised in Seattle, she attended the University of Washington, where she was a member of Phi Mu sorority. For 20 years she worked as a secretary in the Chemistry Department at Stanford University. She was active in the Girl Scouts, PTA and the First Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her husband, Frank H. Phillips of Palo Alto; a daughter, Jeanne Lasnier Kennedy; a stepdaughter, Louise Christie Pascoe; a sister; a brother; a granddaughter; three grandsons; and three great-grandchildren. Katherine F. Underhill, 80, a 17-year resident of Menlo Park, died
Dec. 13, 1994 at Stanford Medical Center after a short illness. She was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church, Little House and Rosener House in Menlo Park. She is survived by a daughter, Ellen F. Kitamura of Menlo Park; two sons, Peter A. Underhill of Palo Alto and John V. Underhill; and six grandchildren. A memorial mass will be held Dec. 21 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Denis Catholic Church, 2250 Avy Ave., Menlo Park. The family prefers donations to Peninsula Volunteers, 800 Middle Ave., Menlo Park, CA 94025.
Robert W. "Bob" Zahnd
Robert W. "Bob" Zahnd, 78, a resident of Menlo Park for 47 years, died
Dec. 15, 1994 at Stanford Medical Center after a short illness. A native of San Francisco, he was a retired painting contractor, a member of the Unity Palo Alto Community Church, San Carlos Masonic Lodge 690 and the Scottish Rite Temple in Burlingame. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Zahnd of Menlo Park; two daughters, Carolyn Paterson and Elaine Zahnd; a sister; and two grandsons. A memorial service will be held Dec. 21 at 3 p.m. at the Unity Palo Alto Community Church, 3391 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto, CA 94306. Eloise E. Brinton
Eloise E. Brinton, 80, a resident of Palo Alto for 57 years, died
Nov. 19, 1994 at Sharon Heights Convalescent Hospital. She had been in declining health following a stroke. Born in Holdredge, Neb., she married
fellow Nebraskan Dwight W. Brinton, who died
in August, and they moved to Palo Alto. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Congregational Church of Palo Alto for 40 years. She was also a talented bread maker and artist. She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Collin of Palo Alto and Marcia Newhall; a son, Richard Brinton; two sisters; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. Dec. 16 at the First Congregational Church, 1985 Louis Road, Palo Alto. Donations may be made to the Ecumenical Hunger Program at the same address.
Maurice J. Laudereau
Maurice J. Laudereau, 73, a resident of Palo Alto for 48 years, died
Dec. 10, 1994. Born in Mexico City, he moved to Palo Alto in 1946, where he worked as a computer analyst in the electronics industry until his retirement. He was a member of Redwood Church of Christ in Redwood City. He is survived by his wife, Margaret D. Laudereau of Palo Alto; a son, James M. Laudereau of Palo Alto; and two daughters, Elizabeth A. Laudereau of Portola Valley and Lois L. Cole.
Mildred Mendelowitz
Mildred Mendelowitz, 87, a longtime resident of Stanford, died
Dec. 8, 1994 of a brain tumor. Born in New York, she attended Columbia University. The wife of a painter and art professor at Stanford, she enjoyed provoking dinnertime debates among artists, physicians, political scientists and other scholars. Alice Edith Soudani
Alice Edith Soudani, 70, a resident of Palo Alto for four years, died
Dec. 9, 1994 after a long illness. Born in New York, she worked as a nurse in several hospitals in San Diego for 37 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Palo Alto. She is survived by two sons, Tarik Soudani and Kenneth Soudani, and six grandchildren.
Joy Fossum Arthur
Joy Fossum Arthur, 77, a resident of Palo Alto from 1961 to 1976, died
Dec. 11, 1994 at her home in La Jolla. She was a retired teacher who had taught at Parent's Nursery School in Palo Alto. She enjoyed backpacking and travel. She is survived by her husband, Robert Arthur; a son, Michael Burke; a daughter, Karen Fowler; and four grandchildren. The family asks that donations be made to the Leukemia Society or Friends of the Library.
Mary Edith Clifford
Mary Edith Clifford, 84, a Palo Alto resident for 64 years, died
Dec. 26, 1994 at Stanford Hospital after a brief illness. She graduated from Palo Alto High School and from Stanford University in 1930 with a degree in English, and was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She held a variety of positions in the Santa Clara Department of Social Welfare and for 12 years following World War II was the director of the department. She was an active member of the Palo Alto Historical Society, Stanford Library Associates, Stanford Friends of Dance, Neighbors Abroad and the American Association of University Women. She is survived by a daughter, Carol Clifford Mitchell; five grandchildren, including Laura M. Schickli and John C. Mitchell of Palo Alto; and eight great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the Palo Alto Historical Society or the Stanford Friends of Dance. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Jan. 5 at First Presbyterian Church, 1140 Cowper St., Palo Alto.

Kathryne Finley, a resident of Palo Alto, died
at home Dec. 22, 1994. A native of Manitoba, Canada, she was an executive secretary at Bowwest Company. Irene S. Forrest
Irene S. Forrest, 86, a 33-year resident of Menlo Park, died
Dec. 22, 1994. A native of Berlin, Germany, she was a biochemist noted for her research in psychopharmacology. Educated at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute, she worked for various institutions before joining the Veterans Administration. In 1961 she was transferred to the Palo Alto VA Hospital, where she worked until retiring in 1978. She is survived by a daughter, Joan Armer of Menlo Park, and three grandchildren.
