A memorial celebration will be Jan. 25 for Josette Louise Bennett, who died Friday at a local hospital from complications of a fall. She was 74.
A native of Lausanne, Switzerland, Mrs. Bennett retired to Santa Cruz in 1993 after working as a medical claims examiner for Blue Shield of California and later as a caregiver in San Mateo.
An avid animal-rights activist, she was a member of the American Humane Society, Animal Rescue Foundation, Marine Mammal Center and American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Mrs. Bennett enjoyed gardening, mushroom hunting, walking, dancing, singing and going antique shopping, her family said.
She is survived by daughters Olivia Litz of Redwood City, Leslie Scott-Cocking of San Rafael and Brenda Scott-Rogers of Kauai, Hawaii; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Her grandson, Scott Nona Rogers, died before her.
A celebration of her life will be 12:30 p.m. Jan. 25 at the Rancho Corralitos Mobile Home Park Clubhouse, 270 Hames Road, Corralitos.

Charlotte Stull MacGillivray
Services are Friday for Charlotte Stull MacGillivray, who died Saturday in a San Jose hospital. She was 97.
A North Dakota native, Mrs. MacGillivray was a longtime Santa Cruz resident who served as organist for the United Methodist Church of Santa Cruz. She taught music and was known as a pipe organ performer and teacher.
She is survived by husband Alvin MacGillivray of San Jose and a great-niece.
Services are at 11 a.m. Friday at the Mission Chapel of Santa Cruz Memorial Park Funeral Home, 1927 Ocean St., Santa Cruz. Burial will follow in the Mission Mausoleum in Santa Cruz Memorial Park.

Katie Drewfs Rutter
Services are private for Katie Drewfs Rutter, who died Sunday in Henderson, Nev. She was 91.
A native of San Martin, Mrs. Rutter lived for 57 years in Santa Cruz, where she was a member of the Eastern Star. She loved gardening, cooking large holiday dinners and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her son, Donald W. Rutter of Henderson, Nev.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Her husband, William H. Rutter, died in 2002.

JAMES A. STEVENSON
A memorial service will be held at a later date for James A. Stevenson, Sr. who passed away December 17, 2003 after losing a battle with cancer.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Jean Stevenson of Santa Cruz; son Michael Stevenson of Corvallis, Montana; grandchildren, Donald, Scot, Jeff and Sarah.
He was born in Tulare County and grew up in Dinuba. In 1950 he moved his family to Santa Cruz where he joined his father in a family business. Jim worked many years as a painter.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Always willing to lend a helping hand or to just be there with a smile.
A private cremation is under the direction of Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga St, Santa Cruz, Ca.

Hazel M. Oliver
Services are Saturday for Hazel Marguarite Oliver, who died Wednesday at Pacific Coast Manor in Capitola. She was 91.
A native of Newman, Kan., Mrs. Oliver lived in the Santa Cruz area for 67 years. She loved cards and board games, especially Yahtzee.
She is survived by a son, Don Brownell of Aptos; daughters Norma Lee Ebert of Aptos and Charlotte Eardley of New Hampshire; brother Marcus White of Utah; sister Florence Glenn of Southern California; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Pajaro Valley Memorial Park, 127 Hecker Pass Road, Watsonville.

DiAnna Maureen Turcotte-Proctor
Services are Monday for DiAnna Maureen Turcotte-Proctor, who died Dec. 8 at Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento of cancer. She was 58.
Born in England, Mrs. Turcotte-Proctor grew up in Santa Cruz and spent 10 years working in the dry-cleaning industry. She enjoyed the beaches of Santa Cruz and the Boardwalk.
She is survived by daughters Barbara Jean Young and Denise Velma Young, both of Sacramento; son David Earnest Young of Sacramento; mother Kathleen Ivy Turcotte of Santa Cruz; sisters Sylvia Turcotte of Hollister, Barbara Meyers of Discovery Bay, Mary Lou Turcotte of Santa Cruz, Terri Lee Turcotte of Muskogee, Okla., and Jackie Turcotte of Soquel; brothers Raymond Turcotte of Prunedale, Allan Turcotte of Marina, Gordon Turcotte of Santa Rosa and Jim Turcotte of Watsonville; and eight grandchildren.
Her husband, Jack Proctor, died before her.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Kathleen Ivy Turcotte’s home, 2500 Soquel Drive, Apt. B-2, Santa Cruz. Her ashes will be scattered at sea afterward.

Peggie M. Warnock
Services are private for Peggie M. Warnock, who died Friday at her home in Aptos. She was 83.
Born in Ben Wheeler, Texas, Mrs. Warnock loved to dance, garden, travel and sew.
She is survived by her husband Jim Warnock of Aptos; son Carroll Blackstock; three grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four nieces and nephews.

Winifred E. Belville
Services were Friday for Winifred Eleanor Belville, who died Tuesday at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass, Ore. She was 87.
Born in San Francisco, Mrs. Belville moved to Ben Lomond in the 1960s, raising eight children and looking after a number of pets that included dogs, turtles, hamsters and monkeys. Her husband’s failing health prompted a move to Oregon in 1985.
She is survived by sons Dallas Duke Belville of Bonny Doon, Dennis Jay Belville of Felton, Shannon David Belville of Scotts Valley, Daniel Timothy Belville of San Carlos and Donald Christopher Belville of San Jose; daughters Judy Ann Illingsworth of Selma, Ore., Denise Kathleen Hansen of Rogue River, Ore. and Terri Sue Mangin of Jacksonville, Ore.; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Dallas Belville, died in 1986.

BETTIE LOUISE STEVENS
Private services will be held for Bettie Louise Stevens who passed away peacefully at a local convalescent hospital on December 20, 2003. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, she was 81 years old. Moving to the Santa Cruz area in 1959 she raised her family and has resided here since. Her family will forever remember her as a loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jeanine and James Asche of Half Moon Bay. She also leaves her two grandchildren, Michael Asche of the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, and Audrey Asche of Half Moon Bay.

ELDA P. ROTA
Rota, Elda Passerini, 88, at rest Dec. 14, 2003, Durham, NC.
A resident of DeAnza Park in Santa Cruz, CA, from 1985 to 1996, Mrs. Rota was a volunteer at Dominican Hospital and Calvary Episcopal Church, and dedicated to her husband, Hermes, and sons, Alex and Bill.
Born Elda Anita Passerini Oct. 4, 1915 in New York, NY, to Mario and Dirce Passerini, she wed Hermes Rota in 1937. In 1943 she and Hermes left NY for southern CA, where she became a secretary and he a union electrician. After retirement the Rotas moved to Santa Cruz to be near their son Bill and his family. Upon Hermes' death, Mrs. Rota relocated to Durham, NC, where she resided with her son Alex and his family until her passing.
Mrs. Rota will be remembered as a irrepressibly optimistic and positive person, devoted to her family, church, and community. She is survived by her son Alex and his wife Rickie, both of Durham, NC; her son Bill and his wife Suzanne, both of Scotts Valley; and grandchildren April Rota of Asheville, NC, and Max Rota of Scotts Valley, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hermes, and her sisters Dilva Bassi, Sylvia Davenport, and Alma Manfredonia.
Funeral services will be private. Written remembrances of Elda may be sent in care of Alex Rota, 2010 Dartmouth Dr., Durham, NC 27705. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a contribution honoring Elda be made to your favorite charity.
