Mr. Miller was born in Coalinga. He was a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and the Santa Cruz Toymakers. He enjoyed boating, carpentry and fishing.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Bernadine Miller; sons Don Miller of Lake Oswego, Ore. and Dean Miller of Sparks, Nev.; daughter Leanne Miller of Hayward; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Oakwood Memorial Park, 3301 Paul Sweet Road, Santa Cruz.

Norman Hartvickson
Services will be Jan. 3 for Norman W. Hartvickson, who died Monday in Capitola. He was 85.
Mr. Hartvickson was born in Wolford, N.D., and lived in Turlock for many years before retiring to Santa Cruz County in 1970.
Mr. Hartvickson served in the Army during World War II, then owned and operated Hartvickson Transportation in Turlock for 40 years.
He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting and gardening and had traveled the world with his wife, Alta Mae. He was a member of the Turlock Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Alta Mae Hartvickson of Capitola; daughters Cheryl Breshears of Capitola and Pamela Taylor of Aptos; sisters Annamae Keele and Lois Roisen, both of Salem, Ore.; brothers Leonard Hartvickson of Beaverton, Ore. and Philip Hartvickson of Concord; one grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. Jan. 3 at Oakwood Memorial Park Chapel, 3301 Paul Sweet Road, Santa Cruz.

Joseph P. McFadden
Services will be Jan. 5 for Joseph P. McFadden, who died Dec. 19 of cancer. He was 81 and died at the Santa Cruz home of his niece and her husband, Susan and John Barisone.
Mr. McFadden was born in Australia and grew up in Palo Alto. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II, then returned to Palo Alto, where he worked as a heavy equipment operator. He retired in 1987.
He was life-long member of the Palo Alto Elks Club and an ardent sports fan.
He is survived by brother Bill McFadden of Florida; sister Evaleen Mary Atchison of Santa Cruz; and 12 nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10 a.m. Jan. 5 at St. Joseph’s Church in Mountain View.

Kent Hughes
Services will be Jan. 3 for Kent Woodall Hughes, who died Dec. 19 of a cardiac arrhythmia. He was 53.
Mr. Hughes was born in Carmel and graduated from Monterey High School. He majored in German literature at UC Santa Cruz.
A resident of the Soquel area since 1969, he founded Hughes Custom Homes in 1980 and built many homes in the Monterey and San Francisco Bay areas.
Mr. Hughes loved walks in the woods, sailing, body surfing, golf and other outdoor activities, his family said. He especially enjoyed listening to his favorite music while driving his Mustang convertible.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Martha Dowling-Hughes of Soquel; daughters Courtney Hughes of San Diego and Brinn Hughes of Soquel; mother Mary Bell Hughes of Carmel; sister Susan Hughes of Santa Cruz; brothers David Hughes of Carmel, Mark Hughes of Prunedale and Phillip Hughes of Manhattan, Kansas; four nieces; and seven nephews.
His father, R. Stafford Hughes, died in 1965.
Services will be 2 p.m. Jan. 3 at Cabrillo College Arboretum, 6500 Soquel Drive, Aptos.

Eleanor I. Croce
Services will be private for Eleanor Iversen Croce, who died Monday at Brookside Hospital in Redlands. She was 91.
Mrs. Croce was born in Richmond and raised in the Live Oak area. She graduated from Santa Cruz High School in 1930 and lived in Santa Cruz for more than 70 years.
Mrs. Croce worked as a legal secretary for Frank Murphy Sr. and as a secretary for Central County Garbage. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading and following politics.
She is survived by daughter Marsha Gebara of Redlands; son Arne Croce of San Mateo; and two grandchildren.
Her husband of 24 years, Louie Croce, died in 1966.

NORMAN W. HARTVICKSON
Services will be held in January for Norman W. Hartvickson who passed away on Monday, December 22, 2003 in Capitola, CA. He was 85 years old. Born in Wolford, North Dakota, he was a resident of Turlock, CA for many years and a resident of Santa Cruz County since retiring in 1970. Norman served in the US army during World War II for over three years. He owned and operated the Hartvickson Transportation in Turlock, CA for 40 years, retiring in 1970. He enjoyed playing Golf, fishing, hunting, and gardening. He and his wife traveled the world over. He was a member of the Turlock Masonic Lodge, Shriners and SIRS of Aptos, California.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Alta Mae Hartvickson of Capitola; his daughters, Cheryl Breshears of Capitola and Pamela Taylor of Aptos; his sisters, Annamae Keele and Lois Roisen of Salem Oregon; his brothers, Leonard Hartvickson of Beaverton, Oregon and Philip Hartvickson of Concord, CA. He is also survived by his grandson, Derrick Volk of Turlock, CA as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2004 beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Oakwood Memorial Park Chapel (3301 Paul Sweet Road, Santa Cruz, CA)

JOHN BASSANO
John Bassano passed away peacefully at his home Tuesday, December 23, 2003, with his two sons at his side.
John was born on November 1, 1911, on Lighthouse Ave, in Santa Cruz. He lived his entire life on Lighthouse Avenue working as a commercial fisherman. He was also one of the two remaining active fisherman from the original Italian-Genovese community of Santa Cruz. Up until two months ago, John was still fishing on his boat, the Lou Denny Wayne, which was built and launched in Pittsburgh, California in 1951. John and his brother Augie made the maiden voyage from Pittsburgh to Santa Cruz, which was to be the boat's home to this day. John's fishing took him as far north as Alaska and as far south as Baja, California. Johnnie, as his friends and family affectionately called him, will be remembered for his great humor, witty one-liners, his unwavering optimism, and his devotion to family. He was a member of the Oblates of St Joseph and the Marconi Club. John was preceded in death by his cherished wife of 61 years, Louise. He is survived by his brother, Augie, devoted sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Rainy Bassano, Wayne and Susan Bassano, grandchildren, Dennis and Mary Bassano and Nicholas Bassano, all of Santa Cruz. Johnnie also leaves behind numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews, and an amazing circle of friends of all ages.
Services will be held at Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel 1050 Cayuga St, Santa Cruz, CA. Monday December 29, 2003 beginning at 10:00 a.m. Friends are invited to call at the chapel Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. A Private entombment will follow in Holy Cross Mausoleum, Santa Cruz, CA.

Dianne Sarah Schaffer
Services will be Wednesday for Dianne Sarah Schaffer, who died Jan. 22. She was 73.
Born in Atlantic City, N.J., she was a prize-winning jitterbugger in her college years. She lived in Santa Cruz and will be remembered for her love of her cat, Mikey, and for doing the New York Times crossword puzzle every day until her health prevented it.
She is survived by her sister, Linda Case of Atlantic City; brother, Larry Schaffer of Long Beach; daughter, Barbara Baker of Santa Cruz; several grandchildren.
Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Twin Lakes Church, 2701 Cabrillo College Drive, Aptos.
If anyone wishes to make memorial donations in her name, the family said the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or low-cost veterinary programs would be her wish.

Robin Basich
Private services were held for Robin Basich, who died Tuesday in Watsonville. He was 43.
Born in Watsonville, he graduated from Watsonville High School and served in the U.S. Air Force. Following his military service, he began working as a diesel mechanic and was formerly employed by Henry Cruz Trucking Co.
He enjoyed fishing in his spare time.
Basich is survived by his sisters, Allie Ostrander of Salinas, Nena Knight of Corvalis, Mont., Sabrena Jones of Bakersfield, Hila Berdin and Dorothy Strong.
A private cremation is under the direction of Santa Cruz Watsonville Cremation Service.
