Services will be Monday and Tuesday for Irene M. Maggi, who died Friday in Santa Cruz. She was 86.
Mrs. Maggi was born in San Francisco and lived there most her life. She and her husband, Edward, traveled to Santa Cruz every weekend to enjoy "the country," as they called it.
She graduated from San Jose High School and attended Heald Business College.
Her family said she was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family, working with her husband on printing industry conferences and shopping - particularly at Nordstroms.
She is survived by daughters Joy Rodoni of Santa Cruz and Joan Horan of Thousand Oaks; grandchildren Cathy Philipovitch, Steve Rodoni, Robert Rodoni, Elizabeth Horan, Jennifer Horan, Andy Horan and Laura Horan; and four great-grandchildren.
Friends may call 3-7 p.m. at Pacific Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga St., Santa Cruz.
A vigil service will be 7 p.m. Monday at Pacific Gardens Chapel.
A funeral procession will leave at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday from Pacific Gardens Chapel for St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 435 Monterey Ave., Capitola. A Mass of Christian Burial follows at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church.

Pauline Rarick
No services are planned for Pauline Rarick, who died Feb. 18 at the Santa Cruz Health Care Center. She was 83.
A Santa Cruz native, she lived in Capitola for more than 25 years. During World War II, she was an electrician working on Navy ships that were built in the San Francisco Bay Area. She also was a professional seamstress and accountant.
She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Harman of Ramah, N.M.; grandchildren Jessica Harman of Albuquerque and Eli Harman of San Diego; and two great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of Santa Cruz Memorial Park Funeral Home.

John Jerome Sheehy
Services have been held for John Jerome Sheehy, who died Feb. 18 at his home in Yuba City. He was 86.
A descendant of a pioneer family of Watsonville, he was born in San Jose and lived in Yuba City since 1945. He was a partner in Huntley-Sheehy Insurance until his retirement.
He attended Bellarmine College Preparatory School, Santa Clara University and graduated from Santa Clara’s law school in 1940. He served as a Naval officer in the Pacific during World War II and was aboard a destroyer during the battle of Okinawa. He retired as a lieutenant commander.
He was the grandson of Gold Rush pioneers John and Ellen Sheehy, who settled in the Pajaro Valley and formed a family corporation in 1901 to provide for their 10 children. Mr. Sheehy was president of that company for 18 years. The company still owns two ranches on San Juan Road.
Mr. Sheehy is survived by his wife of 62 years, Hope Boyd Sheehy of Yuba City, and a daughter, Lorie Cress of Sacramento.
His sisters Ellen Judge, Rosemarie Gummer and Anita Rogers and his brother Phillip Sheehy died before him.

Renee A. Vierra-Frisch
Services will be Friday for Renee A. Vierra-Frisch, who died Feb. 17 in Corralitos. She was 70.
Ms. Vierra-Frisch was born in Salinas and grew up in Taft, spending her summers with family in Moss Landing. She lived in Earlimart and Sunnyvale before moving to Corralitos in 1995.
She graduated from Taft Union High School. She received supervision and management certificates from West Valley College in Saratoga and a bachelor’s of science degree in humanities from Oregon State University. She earned her teaching credential from San Jose State University.
She worked many years for Lockheed Missiles as a computer trainer and development instructor. Prior to that, she was a school teacher at Earlimart Elementary School and for the Mountain View-Los Altos High School, Los Gatos-Saratoga High School and Fremont Union High School districts.
She is survived by son Karl Frisch of Socorro, N.M.; daughter Darcee Olson of Los Angeles; and six grandchildren.
Her sons, Konrad, Brian and Craig Frisch, died before her.
Services are 1 p.m. Friday at Mehl’s Colonial Chapel, 222 E. Lake Ave., Watsonville. Burial will follow at Pajaro Valley Memorial Park on Hecker Pass Road, Watsonville.

Irene H. Medaris
Services are private for Irene H. Medaris, who died Feb. 25 at a local convalescent hospital. She was 96.
Mrs. Medaris was a native of North Dakota. She taught school for many years in North Dakota and later for Saint Anthony’s School District in Minnesota. She came to California in the late 1970s and settled in Aptos.
In her spare time she enjoyed working in her garden, her family said.
Her son Darryl Dill of Aptos created a scholarship in his mother’s name at Cabrillo College four years ago. Dill said he wanted to honor his mother, who had taught many years in country schools. He said she once gave him a failing grade in fourth-grade history. He went on to earn a college degree, majoring in - you guessed it - history.
She is survived by her son, Darryl Dill of Aptos; sister, Evelyn Kopp of Rosemont, Ore.; and her niece Shirl Reimer of Aptos.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Eleanor Reimer of Aptos.
A private cremation is being handled by Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga St., Santa Cruz. Inurnment will be in Richardton, N.D.

Emmanuel ‘Manuel’ Gomez
Services will be Friday for Emmanuel "Manuel" Gomez, who died Sunday after he was shot while visiting family members in Mexico. He was 17.
Mr. Gomez was born in Santa Cruz and attended school in Watsonville. He enjoyed working on cars.
He is survived by grandparents Guadalupe and Bonifacio Gomez of Watsonville; parents Victoria and Everardo Gomez of Watsonville; brothers Everardo Gomez Jr. and Jesus Gomez, both of Watsonville; sisters Haydee G. Figueroa, Esmerelda Fernandez and Guadalupe Gomez, all of Watsonville; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Davis Memorial Chapel, 609 Main St., Watsonville.
A rosary service will be 6 p.m. Thursday at Davis Memorial.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday at Church of the Assumption in Pajaro.
Mr. Gomez will be buried at Valley Public Cemetery.

Gary Wilson
A memorial service is planned for Gary Wilson, who died Feb. 16 in Aptos. He was 58.
A California native, he enjoyed surfing for 43 years. He loved to travel and experience new things. He also was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 346 of Palo Alto.
He is survived by his wife, Kristie; a son Brady Wilson of Whittier; a daughter Brandy of Lakewood; his father, Harry G. Wilson of Broken Arrow, Okla.; two brothers, Randall Wilson of Durango, Colo., and Ronald Wilson of Shingle Springs; a sister, Cindy Ridley of Shingle Springs; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in the near future for family and friends. Arrangements are by Santa Cruz Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 1927 Ocean St. Extension, Santa Cruz.

John Francis Hyman
Services will be Saturday for John Hyman, who died Thursday in Watsonville. He was 52.
Born in Los Angeles, he lived in Santa Cruz for 48 years. He attended Old Mountain School, Branciforte Junior High School and graduated from Soquel High School in 1969. He was a talented athlete, belonging to numerous youth football and baseball teams in the Soquel and DeLaveaga areas with his best friend, Frank Sloane. Later, he competed in horseshoe tournaments and played golf.
He was active in Knights of Columbus charitable events, serving as Grand Knight in 2001. He enjoyed cooking, particularly for family gatherings, and was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, where he served as a Eucharist minister.
He is survived by his parents, Henry and Anna Hyman of Soquel; a daughter, Zoe Flynn of Minnesota; two sons, Sean and Adam Hyman, both of Santa Cruz; his fiancee, Judith Haynes of Grass Valley; two sisters, Roseann Harn of Soquel and Mary Chulian of Oakland, Ore.; three brothers, Joseph Hyman of Watsonville, Bryce Hyman of Felton and Paul Hyman of France; three aunts; two grandchildren; three nieces and 11 nephews.
A memorial Mass will be 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s Church, 435 Monterey Ave., Capitola.
Private Burial is under the direction of Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel in Santa Cruz.

Edwin Jack Vares
No local services are planned for Edwin Jack Vares, who died Tuesday in Capitola. He was 95.
Born in Oakland, he retired to Capitola 27 years ago. He lived most of his life in Modesto, where he farmed and had a welding shop. An accomplished welder, he worked on various government war and scientific projects during World War II.
He is survived by daughter Sharon Cross; grandchildren Joseph Cross, Jerry Cross, Jeffery Cross, Oran Vares, Steven Vares and Diane Vares; and a great-granddaughter.
His wife, Hazel, died in 1995. His son, Oran Vares, also died before him.
Graveside services will be in Escalon.
Contributions are preferred to the American Cancer Society.
