No services are planned for Stephen Frederick Milliken, who died Sunday in Santa Cruz. He was 74.
Born in New London, Conn., Milliken was a college professor who earned his Ph.D. at Columbia University in New York City. He taught at various universities in Montana and taught for eight years in Africa.
He was a resident of Santa Cruz County for 17 years, most recently living with his wife at Trade Winds Park in Capitola.
Milliken is survived by his wife, Michelle, of Capitola; stepsons, Alain Mehl of France, Paul Mehl of Pennsylvania and Jan Mehl of California; stepdaughter, JoAnne Mehl-Mitchell of Alaska; sister, Marilyn Glusko of Tuxedo Park, N.Y.; four stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ellsworth L. Hubbard
Memorial services will be held later for Ellsworth L. Hubbard, who died Saturday at Watsonville Community Hospital after a long illness. He was 89.
A native of Madera, Mr. Hubbard had lived in Watsonville for the past 75 years.
He graduated from Hollister High School, where he was an outstanding track star, winning high hurdle and long jump championships in 1932.
He worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 39 years, retiring as a conductor. He also owned a farm in Aromas where he grew berries and apricots.
Mr. Hubbard, whom friends nicknamed "Hub" and Swede," spent almost every day of his retirement fishing, family members say. One of his favorite fishing spots was Pinto Lake. He was also a member of S.I.R.S. in Watsonville.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Edith M. Hubbard of Watsonville; two sons, Garth Hubbard of Spring Valley and Donald Hubbard of Carmel; a daughter, Jeannine Hubbard of Aptos; and two grandchildren.

Peggy Benton
Services will be private for Peggy Benton, who died Thursday at Valley Medical Center in San Jose. She was 83.
Mrs. Benton was a native of St. Louis, Mo. She had lived in Aptos since 1986.
She received her undergraduate from Washington University in St. Louis, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa. She earned her doctorate from Yale University.
She worked as a teacher for 30 years, retiring as director of Child Care Services Personnel from the Los Angeles City School District.
She enjoyed reading and had volunteered with local ESL programs. She also loved nature, walking on the beach in Santa Cruz, drama and science. She recently began learning Tai Chi and liked to discuss politics and the arts with her siblings and friends.
She is survived by a sister, Patricia Regdon of San Jose; a brother, Terence Mooney of Wisconsin; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and -nephews.
Her husband, Gene Benton, died in 2002.

Madge ‘Babe’ Bailey
Services will be Sunday for Madge "Babe" Bailey, who died Wednesday at a local hospital. She was 96.
Mrs. Bailey was born in Selma. She had lived in Santa Cruz since 1936.
She was a graduate of Selma High School.
As a young woman, she worked on her family’s raisin ranch.
She enjoyed travel and loved gardening, especially growing orchids.
Her husband of more than 70 years, Ted "PopPop" Bailey, died in 1995. Her daughter, Peggy McCarroll Baker, and her three sisters also died before her.
She is survived by a grandson, Ted McCarroll of Soquel; a granddaughter, Judy Simon of San Juan Bautista; four great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are 11:30 a.m. Sunday at Oakwood Memorial Park, 3301 Paul Sweet Road in Santa Cruz.

Deborah Vik-Martinez
Services will be Sunday for Deborah Vik-Martinez, who died Jan. 22 at Watsonville Community Hospital. She was 30.
The daughter of an Army officer, Vik-Martinez was born at Fort Belvoir, Va., in 1972. She was developmentally disabled.
In 1975, the family moved to Fort Ord where her mother helped establish the Multihandicapped Preschool of the Monterey Peninsula.
Vik-Martinez moved to Santa Cruz and became the foster daughter of Joe and Ann Martinez in 1977, when her father was transferred to Korea.
She attended the Duncan Holbert School in Watsonville, and worked at the Skills Center in Aptos. She enjoyed swimming, bowling and vacations in Mexico and Hawaii.
She is survived by her parents, Donald and Karen Vik of Hollister; foster parents, Joe and Ann Martinez of Watsonville; grandparents Hazel Loptien of Colorado, Greg Vik of Colorado and Tobias Martinez of Watsonville; and sisters, Tanya Vik of San Diego and Laura Dang of Hollister.
Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at La Selva Beach Community Church, 26 Florido Ave.

Vera Micka Chapman
Services will be Sunday evening for Vera Micka Chapman, who died Jan. 26 in Santa Cruz following a long illness. She was 84.
Mrs. Chapman was an Illinois native. She had lived in Santa Cruz for the past 30 years.
A homemaker, she enjoyed working in her garden.
She is survived by a step-daughter, Patricia Heathcote of Sacramento; a step-son, Michael Chapman of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a sister, Sylvia Schindler of Santa Cruz; a niece, Joyce Schindler of Fairfield, Ill.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Her husband Ivan Morton Chapman died in 1997.
Services will be Sunday evening at the Suburban Family Funeral Home in Cicerow, Ill. Burial will be Monday in the family plot at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Forest Park, Ill.
Arrangements are by Oakwood Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Santa Cruz.

Dawn T. Thompson
Services will be private for Dawn T. Thompson, who died Tuesday in Watsonville. She was 46.
Ms. Thompson was born in Midland, Texas, and moved to Watsonville in 2001.
She earned an associate degree from De Anza College in Cupertino and enjoyed crossword puzzles and computers.
She is survived by father Ulysses Thompson and stepmother Suzane Thompson, both of San Angelo, Texas; sisters Decharyl Miller of East Palo Alto and Sharrill Thompson of Fresno, and stepsisters Dawn Singh and Antoinette Vigil, both of Fresno.

Sylvia Blevins Copenhaver
Services will be Friday for Sylvia Blevins Copenhaver, who died Wednesday. She was 83.
A native of Logan County, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late John and Mollie Pack Blevins. She retired from DHEC and was a member of the Washington Street United Methodist Church, where she was active in Circle No. 17.
The widow of Oliver A. Copenhaver, she is survived by sons John William "Bill" Copenhaver of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and David Copenhaver of Hurricane, W.Va.; daughters Susan Barrabee of Santa Cruz and Molly Haught of Charleston, S.C.; a sister, Palmoneda Blevins Brown of Fort Meyers, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
Services will be 3:30 p.m. Friday at Washington Street United Methodist Church, Christ Chapel, in Columbia, SC.
