Services will Wednesday for James "Jim" Panis who died Saturday in his Watsonville home. He was 65.
Mr. Panis graduated in 1958 from Gilroy High School, where he was a member of the wrestling team.
He worked for 20 years for various companies in Watsonville, including the Resetar Brothers, West Coast Farms, Driscoll and GBS.
He enjoyed traveling to Reno to gamble, and also enjoyed camping and fishing.
Mr. Panis was a great supporter of the local sheriff’s and fire department, donating annually.
He is survived by brothers Raymond Panis Sr. and Jesse Panis, both of Watsonville; sister Rose Panis of San Francisco; nine nieces and nephews; and three great-nieces and -nephews.
His brother Victor Panis Jr. died before him.
The rosary will be recited at 7 tonight at Mehl’s Colonial Chapel, 222 E. Lake Ave., Watsonville.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and at 8 a.m. Wednesday at Mehl’s. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 721 Main St., Watsonville. Burial will follow at Pajaro Valley Cemetery, 2401 E. Lake Ave., Watsonville.
Contributions are preferred to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, 701 Ocean St. No. 340, Santa Cruz, CA 95060, or local fire departments.
Arrangements are by Mehl’s Colonial Chapel.

James William Lord
Services will be private for James William Lord, who died of cancer July 1 in Reno, Nev. He was 56.
Mr. Lord was born and raised in Selma. He lived in Scotts Valley for more than 20 years before moving to Reno three years ago.
He served in the Air Force. He worked for the Local IronWorkers 377.
He was an avid fisherman, hunter and outdoorsman, as well as an accomplished private pilot and avid firearms collector.
He is survived by his wife of one year, Paula Marsh of Reno; his father, August William Lord; and his sister, Patricia Lela Rodgers.

James R. Martin
Services will be Friday for James R. Martin, who died Saturday at his home in Capitola. He was 83.
Mr. Martin was born in Columbus, Neb. He moved to Cape Girardeau, Miss., as a child and worked at his father’s theater business, featuring moving pictures and vaudeville acts.
He served in the Army Air Corps in 1939 and was an aircraft mechanic honor graduate from Curtis Wright. After World War II, he received radar detection training in Hawaii.
Mr. Martin served one year in active combat in the Korean War and established a radar and detection unit at the International Air Base in Seoul, Korea.
Upon returning home he was in charge of a top-secret radar supply and navigation project in Dennison, Texas.
For his military accomplishments, he received various honors including a Distinguished Flying Cross and a Silver Star.
Mr. Martin worked as a contract negotiator for Sylvania in Mountain View. He also taught contracts and negotiations at De Anza College and Stanford University.
He attended the Catholic Church and was a 4-H leader and a 4-H community club leader in Santa Cruz County.
He enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of numerous bridge clubs.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mariellen Martin; sons James Patrick of Charleston, W.Va., and Jack Martin of Santa Clara; daughters Julieann Martin of Los Angeles, Rose Peronteau of San Francisco, April Beltz of Ben Lomond, and Katy Bertoldo of San Jose; and brother Bruce Martin of Birmingham, Ala.
His daughter Terry Martin died before him.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Oakwood Memorial Chapel, 3301 Paul Sweet Road, Santa Cruz. A reception will follow at the Beltz home. Directions will be provided.
Donations are preferred to St. Vincent De Paul charities.
Arrangements are by Oakwood Memorial Chapel.

Joseph S. Kraus
Services with military honors will be Friday for Joseph S. Kraus, who died Wednesday in Watsonville. He was 80.
Mr. Kraus was born in New York City and moved to Watsonville in the 1970s.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II on Bougainville, the Solomon Islands, Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands. He worked as a United Air Lines mechanic for 27 years.
He was a member of Blue Knights of Watsonville Community Hospital and the Grey Bears of Watsonville.
He enjoyed gardening.
His is survived by wife Ruth Kraus of Watsonville and son Thomas Kraus of Belmont.
Graveside services with military honors will be 3 p.m. Friday at the Pajaro Valley Memorial Park, Highway 152, Watsonville.
Arrangements are by Davis Memorial Chapel.

Mark Foster
Services will be later for Mark Foster , who died June 30 in Santa Cruz. He was 54.
Mr. Foster was a self-employed contractor. He also worked Veterans Administration hospitals.
He enjoyed surfing, traveling and the outdoors.
He is survived by father Richard Foster of Palm Coast, Fla.; daughters Mary E. Sullivan of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Laura Amundson of Klamath Falls, Ore.; brother Dick Foster of Bayville, N.J.; and a grandson.
