There will be no services for Patricia Doreen Schultz, who died Sept. 8 in Spokane, Wash., of kidney and heart failure. She was 40.
Mrs. Schultz was born in Santa Cruz and grew up in San Lorenzo Valley. She lived in Salem, Ore., before moving to Spokane about a year ago.
Mrs. Schultz attended Boulder Creek Elementary, San Lorenzo Valley Junior High and San Lorenzo Valley High School.
She is survived by father Floyd Schultz of Capitola; mother Dorothy Fisher of Spokane; sister Nancy Schultz of San Jose; and a niece and a great-nephew.

Patrick G. Wilson
Patrick G. Wilson died Sept. 12. He was 75.
Mr. Wilson was born in Santa Cruz and graduated from Santa Cruz High School. He was an author, philosopher and librarian.
A retired UC Berkeley professor, Mr. Wilson went to college after working at a Santa Cruz stationary store, where he met a social worker who encouraged him to go to college. He also worked as a church organist, telegram deliver, store sweeper and a school library page as a young man.
Mr. Wilson earned a bachelor’s degree in library science and a doctorate in philosophy, both from UC Berkeley.
He taught philosophy at UC Los Angeles in 1960 and returned to UC Berkeley in 1965 as an assistant professor in the School of Librarianship. In 1970, he became dean and spearheaded efforts to modernize via computers and automation.
He retired in 1991, and a conference highlighting his work was held in Sweden that year. He was given the Award of Merit in 2001, the highest honor bestowed by the American Society of Information Science and Technology. The society said he wrote three definitive books they called "the most penetrating investigation of fundamental ideas in information science and librarianship that anyone has yet undertaken."
Mr. Wilson has called information science a "fascinating combination of engineering, an odd kind of materials science and social epistemology."
He is survived by brother Thomas D. Wilson of Fairfax; and two nieces and two nephews.

AUGUSTINE T. BREGANTE
Services will be Monday for Augustine T. Bregante who passed away October 8, 2003 at Dominican Hospital. She was 82.
She was born July 22, 1921 in Santa Cruz, the daughter of Marco and Mary Carniglia. Augustine grew up in Santa Cruz and attended Holy Cross School. As a young woman living in Santa Cruz she met and in 1946 marriage Battista Bregante, Jr. In her earlier years she worked at the Miramar Restaurant and also at the cannery.
She was described by her family as a devoted wife, a loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed cooking, baking and gardening. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and a former member of the Italian Catholic Federation.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Virsaitis and her husband, Paul of Aptos; two sons, Battista Bregante III and his wife, Valerie of Soquel and Louis Bregante and his wife, Kimberly of Cleveland, Ga.; brother, Victor Carniglia of Santa Cruz; She was also survived by five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Battista Bregante, Jr in 1983, four brothers and her sister.
The funeral cortège will leave Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel 1050 Cayuga St., Santa Cruz, Ca. Monday October 13 at 9:30 a.m. and proceed to Holy Cross Catholic Church 126 High St., Santa Cruz, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated beginning at 10:00 a.m. A Vigil service will be held at Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will be at the chapel Sunday from 3 p.m. to service time. A private Interment will take place at Santa Cruz Memorial Park.

Robert Alexander
No services will be held for Robert C. Alexander, who died Thursday at his home in Freedom after a two-year-long illness. He was 55.
Mr. Alexander was an Oakland native who lived in the Watsonville area for the last 50 years. He graduated from Watsonville High School in 1965 and served in the U.S. Air Force.
Mr. Alexander worked as a warehouse manager for the Pajaro Valley Unified School District for 20 years and belonged to the local American Legion Post.
He is survived by sons Robert C. Alexander of Watsonville and Jeff Alexander of San Jose; brother, Bill Alexander of Watsonville; sister, Billie Blanton of Salinas; and two grandchildren.
Cremation arrangements are by Mehl’s Colonial Chapel.

Stephen Powers
Services are Friday for Stephen "Steve" Powers, who died at Dominican Hospital on Tuesday after a brief illness. He was 26.
A native of San Jose, Mr. Powers had lived in Capitola for three years. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed surfing, snowboarding and fishing in the ocean and fresh water.
He was a member of the ShoreLife Community Church of Capitola. He also cooked for church functions and was in training to be a chef.
He is survived by his father, Jerrold Powers of Capitola; brothers Christopher Powers of Hollister and Michael Powers of Capitola; three nephews; an aunt and an uncle.
His stepbrother, Dan Dutcherson, died before him. His mother, Michelle Powers, died in 1985.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the ShoreLife Community Church, 875 Monterey Ave., Capitola.
Cremation was at Santa Cruz Memorial Park Crematory. His ashes will be scattered at sea Saturday at 4 p.m. leaving from the wharf in Santa Cruz, near Aldo’s Harbor Restaurant.

Melvin P. Estrade
Services are Saturday for Melvin Prosper Estrade, who died Oct. 7. He was 87.
Mr. Estrade is survived by his wife of 55 years, Susan; sons Marc and Paul; brothers Eugene and Ben, sister Marion; and two granddaughters.
An extended family of more than 350 will remember his patience, kindness and love, his wife said.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Pacific Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga St., Santa Cruz.
A family gathering will be 2 p.m. Sunday at 18401 Graystone Lane, San Jose.
Arrangements are by Pacific Gardens Chapel.

Sylvia L. Goodwin
Private services are planned for Sylvia L. Goodwin, who died Sept. 29 in Santa Cruz. She was 92.
Born in Fergus Falls, Minn., her family moved to San Jose during the Great Depression. She marriage Wilfred Goodwin, a British citizen, who died in 1976.
During the 1950s, she sang in the choir at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Capitola. She was a piano teacher for many years and was a member of the Santa Cruz Monday Music Club, which met at the Women’s Club on Mission Street. Later in life, she earned an LVN degree at Cabrillo College.
Mrs. Goodwin is survived by her daughters, Joan Purswell of Seattle, Jean Dodson of Bakersfield and Judith Mapes of Santa Cruz; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Donations are preferred to the Music Department of St. John’s Episcopal Church, 215 Oakland Ave., Capitola CA 95010.
Memorial services will be private.

Ann Perry Jordan
A Burial at sea will be Nov. 28 for Ann Perry Jordan, who died of non-Hodgkins lymphoma Sept. 29 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene, Ore. She was 43.
A native of Milwaukee, she lived in Santa Cruz from 1976-92.
She graduated from Soquel High School, Cabrillo College and had earned a bachelor’s from George Fox University in Eugene.
Jordan was an aquatics instructor at Willamalane Aquatic Center in Springfield, Ore.
She was an avid reader who enjoyed painting, music and water sports. She earned her aquatic-fitness certification while she was ill.
Mrs. Jordan is survived by her daughter, Anna Sanchez of Eugene; sons Nicholas Sanchez of Fort Drum, N.Y., and David Berney of Eugene; sister Jean Wilson of Santa Cruz; brothers John Jordan of Eden Prairie, Minn., Richard Jordan of Prineville, Ore., Thomas Jordan of Somerset, Ohio, James Jordan of Santa Cruz, Paul Jordan of San Rafael; mother, Germaine Hickson and stepfather Ernie Hickson, both of Redding; father Richard Jordan of Pleasant Hill; three nieces and eight nephews.
Burial at sea will be Nov. 28 in Santa Cruz.
Memorial donations may be made to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene.

Vi Choate
Services will be Thursday for Vi Choate, who died Monday at her Santa Cruz home. She was 91.
Born in Denning, Ark., Mrs. Choate has been a resident of Santa Cruz for the past 56 years. She and her late husband were longtime members of Twin Lakes Church. A talented seamstress, she made more than 30 quilts for her children, grandchildren and friends. While she was residing at La Posada Retirement Community for many years, she sewed beautiful clothing protectors for the residents there. She enjoyed traveling with her family and visited Paris, Germany, Holland, Poland and throughout the United States. Her family will forever remember her love for parlor games, especially "chicken foot" and Dominoes. She was also an avid fan of the Oakland A’s and the San Francisco 49ers.
She is survived by daughters JoAnn Brewer of Casa Grande, Ariz., Coline Weeks of Santa Cruz, Faye Van Langen of Aromas, and Carmen Marflak of Beaufort, S.C.; sons Jim "Sonny" Choate of Las Vegas and Roy Choate of Placerville; sisters Eunice Houston of Texas and Agnes Sensenig of Florida; and 18 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.
Her husband of 60 years, James "Pete" Choate, and her granddaughter, Patty Kem, died before her.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. to noon today at Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga St., Santa Cruz. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. today at Soquel Cemetery on Old San Jose Road.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Nov. 1 at Monschke Hall at Twin Lakes Church, 2701 Cabrillo College Drive, Aptos.
