He studied art history, art and Italian at UC Berkeley and earned a bachelor’s degree in Italian Renaissance Iconography in 1981.
While in college, he researched the origins of playing cards and began creating the Renaissance Tarot, published in 1987 by U.S. Games.
Mr. Williams was artist-in-residence at the National Institute of Graphics in Rome. His etchings and drawings were exhibited in Rome, San Francisco and Berkeley.
In 1994, his second tarot deck, with an accompanying book titled ‘‘PoMo Tarot’’ was published. His sister, Genny Obert, calls it "a humorous, postmodern interpretation of the cards."
Images from the book were published on the cover of The New York Times’ Sunday section and in several U.S. and European magazines.
His recent work included original paintings for Harper Collins’ Angel Journey, the Minchiate, a reinterpretation of the 97-card deck of Renaissance Florence, and ‘‘Light and Shadow Tarot’’ (Inner Traditions), which featured his text.
His final work, to be published in September, is ‘‘Book of Fools.’’
Williams was fluent in Italian, French and Spanish, and could converse in Portuguese and German.
He had fought cancer twice in the recent past, his sister said, but learned in March that his cancer was terminal. Knowing he had just weeks to live, Williams planned a memorial to gather friends and colleagues from around the world in celebration of life, art and love.
