At his request, no services are planned for Elwood "Woody" Herteman, who died Monday at his Capitola home. He was 89.
Mr. Herteman was born in Alameda and had lived in Santa Cruz since 1960. He owned and operated Serrell’s Turkey Products on Soquel Drive for more than 15 years. Family members say Mr. Herteman was very devoted to his business.
He is survived by son Stanley Herteman of Scotts Valley; daughter Janice R. Dodd of Yuba City; sister Alice Woodruf of Oregon; and four grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel.

Lester T. Carlson
Private services were held for Lester T. Carlson, who died Dec. 20 at his Santa Cruz home. He was 93.
A native of Minnesota, Mr. Carlson lived in Milwaukee, Cleveland, Buffalo, Toronto, Miami and Greenville, S.C. He retired after 33 years from the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Mr. Carlson was a member of the Masonic Order and the Shrine. He enjoyed playing golf.
He is survived by son and daughter-in-law Neil and Lorraine Carlson of Santa Cruz; and many nieces and nephews.
His wife of 63 years, Emmy Carlson, and his six siblings died before him.

Robert F. Rogers
Services will be private for Robert F. Rogers, who died Wednesday at his Scotts Valley home. He was 89.
Mr. Rogers was born in Oklahoma and had lived in Santa Cruz County for 10 years.
He worked for Mobil Oil for 26 years, retiring as a lease operator.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Yvonne Rogers of Scotts Valley; sons Dwight Rogers of Arizona and Gary Rogers of Scotts Valley; daughter Janet Abney of Arizona; sisters Eula Speegle and Ann Forman, both of Bakersfield; eight grandchildren; and nine great- grandchildren.

Dennis J. Thorsby
Services will be Saturday for Dennis J. Thorsby, who died Friday in Santa Cruz. He was 55.
Mr. Thorsby was born in Detroit and had lived in Santa Cruz since 1980. He was a construction iron worker and an avid sportsman.
He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Patricia Thorsby; son, James H. Thorsby of Livermore; brothers Doug of Westland, Mich., Richard of Rapid City, S.D., Bruce Thorsby of Durango, Colo., and Bill Thorsby.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at 1674 Colony Way, Santa Cruz. Arrangements by Norman’s Family Chapel.

Bob Kimrey
Services are Friday for Bob Kimrey, who died Sunday in Carmichael. He was 56.
Mr. Kimrey was born in Davenport, Iowa, and lived in the Santa Cruz area for more than 20 years. He enjoyed riding and working on Harley-Davidson motorcycles and cooking.
He is survived by his wife, Colleen, and daughters Nikki, Julie and Erin.

Services will be Wednesday for Ecelia Chavez, who died Saturday at her home in Freedom. She was 90.
Born in Jalisco, Mexico, she lived in the Santa Cruz area for 29 years.
She is survived by sons Rafael Chavez of Watsonville, Ramon Chavez of Watsonville, Luis Chavez of Aromas and Hector Chavez of Freedom; daughters Teresa Gomez of Watsonville, Maria A. Briones of Freedom, Luz Maria Chavez of Guadalajara, Mexico, and Guillermina Cervantes of Las Lomas.
Services will be 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Church of Assumption, 100 Salinas Road, Pajaro. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Davis Memorial Chapel, 609 Main St., Watsonville. Rosary will be at 6 tonight at Davis Memorial Chapel.

Services will be Saturday for Minota E. Barbagelata, who died Sunday at an area convalescent hospital. She was 93.
Born in Sioux Falls, S.D., she was a resident of Santa Cruz County for the past 57 years.
Her daughter, Ethel Little, died before her.
She is survived by daughter Dorothy Ellingson of Ada, Okla.; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Santa Cruz Memorial Park, 1927 Ocean St. Ext. Visitation will be from 1-4 p.m. Friday at Benito and Azzaro’s Pacific Chapel Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga St.

Lester B. Shipman
Services will be Thursday for Lester B. Shipman, who died Saturday in Watsonville. He was 76.
Mr. Shipman was born in Munday, Texas, and had lived in the Watsonville area for 36 years. He was retired from the city Water Department. He enjoyed flea markets and yard sales.
He is survived by a daughter, Tina Ingram of Watsonville, and a son, Jim Shipman of Hesperia.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Pioneer Cemetery, 66 Marin St., Watsonville. Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today at Davis Memorial Chapel, 609 Main St., Watsonville.

James M. McGowan
Services will be Saturday for James Michael McGowan, who died Friday in Santa Cruz. He was 75.
Mr. McGowan was a teacher in Stockton for 30 years before retiring to Aptos. He graduated from Paso Robles High School in 1945 and from the University of Southern California in 1949. He was a member of Aptos Community United Methodist Church.
His wife of 44 years, Margaret Ann Booker McGowan, and a son, John McGowan, died before him.
Survivors include sons James Michael McGowan Jr. of Rochester, Minn., and Paul McGowan of Aptos; daughters Patricia McGowan of Aptos and Carol Ann Stanton of Ketchikan, Alaska.
A memorial service will be at noon Saturday at Aptos Community United Methodist Church. A graveside service will be in San Miguel.

Betty Jayne Haber
Services will be private for Betty Jayne Haber, who died Saturday in Santa Cruz after a lengthy illness. She was 79.
Mrs. Haber was born in Los Angeles and moved to Santa Cruz at age 12. She graduated from Santa Cruz High School in 1940. After graduation, she moved to San Francisco where she worked as an executive secretary for five years before returning to Santa Cruz. She was Santa Cruz County’s first Begonia Queen and enjoyed dancing and reading.
Survivors include daughter Janis Haber Crompton of Santa Cruz and Leslie Haber Crannell of Amity, Ore.
Her husband, Milton Haber, died before her.
A celebration of her life will be later. Donations are preferred to the Hospice Caring Project, 6851 Soquel Drive, Aptos CA 95003; Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Association, 2941 Park Ave., Soquel CA 95073; or a charity of choice.
