Ward H. Bushee Jr.
A memorial Mass and celebration of the life of former Watsonville Register-Pajaronian editor Ward H. Bushee Jr. will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Capitola.
Bushee, who retired in 1989 after 38 years at the Watsonville newspaper, died at his Aptos home on June 5. He was 79.
Friends and colleagues are invited by the Bushee family to attend the service.

David John Lucas
Services will be July 13 for David John Lucas, who died Tuesday after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. He was 51.
Mr. Lucas, a native of Minneapolis, Minn., had lived in Santa Cruz for several years.
He graduated from Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls, S.D. He later attended the University of South Dakota for a year. In 1977, he earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature, summa cum laude, from St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn.
After moving to Santa Cruz, he became the "music guru" at a local music store. Family members said he enjoyed sharing his love of music with others.
Mr. Lucas worked in insurance and escrow banking before retiring in 1988 due to the onset of multiple sclerosis.
He was a member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Cruz.
He enjoyed spending time with his niece, Saskia Lucas of Santa Cruz, who helped care for him during the past seven years.
He is survived by his parents, Jean and Richard Lucas of Loudon, Tenn.; six brothers, Kevin and John Lucas of Sioux Falls, S.D., Phillip Lucas of DeLand, Fla., Daniel Lucas of Portland, Ore., Michael Lucas of Reno, Nev., and Tim Lucas of Spicer, Minn.
Services will be July 13 at 1 p.m. at Oakwood Memorial Park Crystal Chapel, 3301 Paul Sweet Road in Santa Cruz.
Those attending are asked to bring a remembrance of Mr. Lucas to share with others.
Arrangements are by Oakwood Memorial Chapel.

Naomi Crested
No services are planned for Naomi Crested, who died Friday in Capitola. She was 89.
Ms. Crested was born in Chicago, Ill., and moved to Santa Cruz in 1972.
She earned a nursing degree in Chicago in 1933, and a master’s degree in occupational health from UCLA.
Ms. Crested taught at California State University at Northridge, and also worked for the state as a nurse and administrator.
She loved to travel and read.
Ms. Crested is survived by a cousin, Christiana Hydrick of West Valley, Utah.
Arrangements are by Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel.

Marabelle Hedgpeth
Services will be Wednesday for Marabelle Hedgpeth, who died Friday in her Santa Cruz home. She was 81.
A native of Modesto, Mrs. Hedgpeth moved to Santa Cruz with her family in 1923 and had lived here since.
Mrs. Hedgpeth was a member of the Unity Church of Santa Cruz and was a member of the Santa Cruz Surf Twirlers Square Dancing Club with her late husband. The couple also enjoyed ballroom dancing.
Mrs. Hedgpeth is survived by son Raymond Hedgpeth Jr. of Long Beach, daughter Diana Hedgpeth of Santa Cruz, sister Roberta Lee of Santa Cruz and numerous nieces and nephews. Her husband, Raymond Hedgpeth, and daughter Roberta Hedgpeth died before her.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Santa Cruz Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 1927 Ocean St., Santa Cruz. Memorial services will follow at Santa Cruz Memorial Park at noon. Robert ‘Smitty’ Edward Smith
Services will be Thursday for Robert "Smitty" Edward Smith, who died Saturday at his daughter’s Corralitos home. He was 80.
Mr. Smith was born in Fort Smith, Ark. He lived in Santa Cruz from 1945 to 1972, and moved to Corralitos from San Jose in 1996.
Mr. Smith was a longtime Teamsters union member and drove trucks for Borden’s Milk and Pepsi.
He was in the Marines in World War II, family members say, and was one of the original members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7263 in Santa Cruz.
He is survived by a son, Lee Spencer of Santa Cruz; daughters Marlene Bowles of Watsonville, Linda Mazik of Millbrae, Sharron Smith of Corralitos, Shannon Castagnola of Santa Cruz, Rene Cannon of Corralitos and Robin Smith of Turlock; sisters Maydell McLain of Brownsville, Ore., and Nadera Martin of Fontana; 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
His son Randy Smith, his wife, Peggy Smith, and his former wife, Edith Smith, died before him.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Mehl’s Colonial Chapel, 222 East Lake Ave., Watsonville.

Clay E. Peters and Annette Peters
Services will be private for Clay E. Peters and Annette Peters, who died together on June 18 in Paradise. He was 86. She was 84.
Mr. Peters was born in Santa Cruz and Mrs. Peters was born in Pasadena.
Both were raised in Santa Cruz, met in high school and marriage in 1935. They moved to Forest Ranch in 1986, where they spent many joyful moments on their 5-acre home site, and recently moved to Paradise.
Mr. Peters worked for Bank of America for 25 years and in the 1950s managed the Paradise branch. He subsequently worked for the County Bank of Santa Cruz, retiring as vice president and secretary.
Mr. Peters was active in numerous service clubs, including Kiwanis Club and Salvation Army. He served as president of the Paradise Rotary Club, the Paradise Chamber of Commerce and the California Banker’s Association, Group 3.
Mrs. Peters was a homemaker.
Both enjoyed camping, hiking and backpacking in the Sierra with their children and also traveled extensively, especially enjoying the South Seas.
Together, in the 1950s, they built a log cabin in Mineral without the use of power tools.
The couple is survived by sons Clay E. Peters Jr. of McLean, Va., and Don M. Peters of Payson, Ariz.; a daughter, Julianne Herbert of Yuba City; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Emerson C. Owen
Services will be Friday for Emerson C. Owen, who died Sunday at his Scotts Valley home. He was 85.
Mr. Owen was born in San Jose and lived in Scotts Valley for the past 13 years. He attended Lowell Grammar School, Woodrow Wilson Junior High School and graduated from San Jose High School.
Mr. Owen served in the Army during World War II and after the war took real estate extension courses through UC Berkeley.
He worked for the Santa Clara County Assessor’s Office for 14 years and later became a self-employed real estate appraiser in Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties.
Mr. Owen was a member of the San Jose Amateur Movie Club, United Ostomy Association, Sea & Tree Ballroom Dance Club, Montevalle Dance Club, San Jose and Santa Cruz Elks Lodges, the Santa Cruz Kiwanis Club and the Santa Cruz Senior Center.
He was a district governor of Civitan International and a big sir of Sons In Retirement Branch 36 of Santa Cruz.
Mr. Owen also acted as tour director for Senior Citizens Opportunity and performed with his wife, Eileen, in many Senioramas dancing and performing stand-up comedy.
He was a longtime member of the First Church of Religious Science.
Mr. Owen enjoyed music and played the trumpet in high school and belonged to several marching bands in the San Jose area. He also enjoyed tennis, golf and ballroom dancing and took many cruises with his wife as dance instructors and entertainers. In later years, they traveled to Europe, Indonesia and Canada.
In 1997, Mr. and Mrs. Owen told Sentinel columnist Peggy Fernandez that they had eloped during the Depression, two months after they met, and 59 years later still called each other "Angel," spent time daily on their relationship and danced almost every day.
"We always silently thank God for our health, for our love and our prosperity," Eileen Owen said. "... We’ve been really blessed."
Mr. Owen is survived by his wife of 64 years, Eileen Owen of Scotts Valley; a son, Scott Owen of Santa Cruz; two nephews and four nieces.
A memorial celebration will be 11 a.m. Friday at the First Church of Religious Science, now known as the Center for Conscious Living, 1818 Felt St., Santa Cruz.
