Services will be private for Raymond L. Phillips, who died Wednesday at Pacific Coast Manor in Capitola. He was 91.
Mr. Phillips was born in Adams County, Wis. He was a retired purchasing agent for County Bank of Santa Cruz, now known as Comerica Bank. He participated in the bank’s growth and contributed many innovations to their systems.
Mr. Phillips served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. His unit received the Meritous Unit Commendation while serving in the Eighth Army in Korea.
Mr. Phillips was a lifetime member of Tres Pueblos Post 7263 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Chapter 52 Disabled American Veterans, The Retired Officer’s Association, Ancon Lodge AF and AM Balboa of the Republic of Panama, and Scottish Rite of San Jose. He was a Shriner and a member of the Eastern Star Redwoods Chapter 273.
He is survived by son Jim Phillips of Santa Cruz; one grandson; two great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Burial will be in Santa Cruz Memorial Park.

Florence Dawson
Services will be Tuesday for Florence Dawson, who died Wednesday in Santa Cruz. She was 88.
A native of Manhattan, Mrs. Dawson lived most of her life in Staten Island, N.Y. She had lived in Santa Cruz since 1987, and was a member of Holy Cross Church.
She is survived by daughter Margaret Dawson of Santa Cruz; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her son, Christopher Dawson, died in 1999.
A memorial Mass is at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Mission Chapel, 126 High St., Santa Cruz. A reception will follow.
Contributions are preferred to a favorite charity.
Arrangements are by Santa Cruz Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Headley M. Johnson
Services will be Wednesday for Headley Michael Johnson, who died Sunday at his Santa Cruz home after a lengthy illness. He was 57.
Mr. Johnson was born in Santa Cruz and lived in the city for 36 years. He also lived and worked in New York.
He graduated from Santa Cruz High School in 1962 and from UC Santa Barbara in 1966. He retired as national manager of Brooks Brothers Clothing’s special order department in New York.
Mr. Johnson was a member of President Eisenhower’s People-to-People Orchestra, which toured Europe and Eastern Bloc countries in 1966.
He enjoyed reading, traveling, the theater, opera, symphony, playing the violin, swimming and photography.
He is survived by a sister, Sandra J. Breedlove; one aunt; one niece; one nephew; and many cousins.
Services will be 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Oakwood Memorial Crystal Chapel, 3301 Paul Sweet Road, Santa Cruz.

Virginia ‘Nan’ Hayden
Services will be Saturday for Virginia "Nan" Hayden, who died Wednesday in Watsonville. She was 78.
Mrs. Hayden was born in New Jersey. She lived in Southern California before moving to the area 10 years ago. Mrs. Hayden retired from Beckman Instruments in Fullerton.
She is survived by daughter Woody Ledbetter of Aromas; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Jack "Pop" Hayden, son Jack Hayden Jr., and daughter Ruth Mary Torkelson died before her.
Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Davis Memorial Chapel, 609 Main St., Watsonville.

Frederic Henry Willey
Services will be April 6 for Frederic Henry Willey, who died at his Watsonville home Saturday from lung cancer. He was 58.
Mr. Willey graduated from Watsonville Union High School in 1962, was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and attended Cal Poly.
Mr. Willey worked for the city of Watsonville, Fred Betz, Granite Construction and spent 15 years as the facilities manager for West Coast Circuits. He was last employed by Associated Construction of Watsonville.
Mr. Willey will be remembered for his constant good humor, kindness, being soft-spoken and gentle.
He is survived by former wife Kathy O’Lague Smith; daughter April Colette Willey; and son Mark Willey, all of Watsonville; brothers Michel and David Willey of San Francisco, James Willey of Sonora, and Stephen Willey of Jamestown; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial gathering will be 2 p.m. April 6 at 326 Brennan St. in Watsonville.
Arrangements are by Mehl’s Colonial Chapel.

James Walter Kent
Services will be private for James Walter Kent, who died March 20 in Pleasant Hill. He was 83.
Mr. Kent was born in Texas. He had lived in Corralitos for 27 years before moving to Pleasant Hill in 1996.
Mr. Kent worked for Kaiser Steel in Oakland for 27 years.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marsha Kent of Pleasant Hill; sons Jim and John Kent, both of Pleasant Hill; daughters Janet Murphy of Palm Springs and Joyce Vosburg of Walnut Creek; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
His daughter JoAnn Kent died in 1989.
Arrangements are by Oak Park Hills Chapel in Walnut Creek.

Haruso Higaki
Services will be Friday for Haruso Higaki, who died Sunday at Valley Convalescent Hospital in Watsonville. He was 88.
Mr. Higaki was born in Monrovia, but moved to Japan with his parents when he was 6. He returned to California in 1927.
In 1942, he and his family moved to Delta, Colo., to escape the World War II internment camps. After the war, the family settled in Watsonville, where Mr. Higaki grew strawberries.
He was a member of the Watsonville Buddhist Temple and the Japanese American Citizens League and an avid 49ers fan.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Kazuko Higaki of Watsonville; sons John Higaki of San Jose, and Arthur and Robert Higaki, both of Watsonville; and two grandchildren.
Sons Richard and Thomas Higaki died in 1986 and 1993, respectively.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Watsonville Buddhist Temple. Cremation will follow at Pajaro Valley Memorial Park. Mehl’s Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Anthony John Chinciolo
Services will be Thursday for Anthony John Chinciolo, who died Friday in Crows Landing of injuries suffered in an automobile accident. He was 56.
Mr. Chinciolo was born and raised in Stockton. He lived in La Selva Beach for 20 years before moving to Modesto seven years ago.
A self-described "chess palooka," he ran the Young People’s Chess Club in Aptos. While he said 12 was the optimum number of students, up to 24 young players would show up at the library on the third Friday of each month.
"There’s absolutely no way in Caissa’s kingdom that I could ever refuse a student of the game," he told the Sentinel in 1987. Caissa is the goddess of chess.
He attended St. Mary’s High School in Stockton and graduated from the University of the Pacific. He was a senior pharmaceutical representative for Pharmacia Laboratories.
He is survived by his wife, Dori Chinciolo of Modesto; sons John Chinciolo of San Francisco, Chris Chinciolo of San Jose, Aaron Cartwright of Modesto and James Cartwright of Santa Cruz; parents Mary Chinciolo and Leigh Cannon of Stockton; sister Kim Romena of Stockton; brothers Richard Chinciolo, Gary Wyatt and Kirk Cannon, all of Stockton; and two grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be at noon Thursday at Cathedral of the Annunciation, 1110 No. Lincoln, Stockton. DeYoung Memorial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
