The rosary will be said Thursday for Santiago D. Arruiza, who died Sunday after a brief illness. He was 94.
Mr. Arruiza was a native of the Philippines and moved to the Watsonville area in 1934. He had been a farmer for several years before working as a food service employee at Fort Ord Army Hospital for 28 years.
Mr. Arruiza helped build his family’s home in Watsonville and assisted his wife in arranging flowers for the Sacred Heart of Jesus Society and for the Church of the Assumption altar society. He also belonged to St. Patrick’s Church, the Sociedad Guadalupana Iglesia de la Asuncion.
Mr. Arruiza is survived by sons Carlos Pailma of San Jose, Alfonso Arruiza of Los Gatos and Daniel Arruiza of Seaside. His wife Concha and son Jimmie died before him.
A rosary and vigil will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Mehl’s Colonial Chapel. Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick’s Church. Burial will follow at the Pioneer Cemetery.

Alice Lopez
Services will be Thursday for Alice Lopez, who died May 16 at Watsonville Community Hospital after a long illness. She was 77.
Miss Lopez, a native of Ideal, Colo., lived in Watsonville since the early 1970s. She enjoyed reading and Bible study. She also was active at Independence Square and a member of the Anderson Valley Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 9650.
Miss Lopez is survived by brother Raul Lopez of Rialto; sister Josephine Staley of Cottonwood; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from noon until the Catholic chapel blessing begins at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Pajaro Valley Memorial Park.

Darryl ‘Hank’ Bornholdt
Services are pending for Darryl "Hank" Bornholdt, who died Saturday at a local convalescent home after a brief illness. He was 72.
Mr. Bornholdt was born in Los Angeles and lived in Santa Cruz since age 12.
He specialized in welding and was a member of the Plumbers and Steam Fitters Union, Local No. 393, and of the Moose Lodge in Scotts Valley, Local No. 545, and of Messiah Lutheran Church in Santa Cruz.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, A. Bornholdt of Santa Cruz; a son, Tim Bornholdt of Santa Cruz; daughters Carla Moss of Santa Cruz and Gloria Bornholdt of Alameda; and sisters Rio Locatelli of Las Vegas and Florian Adcock of Oregon.
Services are being planned.

Susan Elaine Wagner
Services will be Friday for Susan Elaine Wagner,who died May 13 in Santa Cruz after suffering multiple sclerosis for several years. She was 57.
Mrs. Wagner was born in Watsonville.
She is survived by a niece, Kymberly Germano of Vancouver, Wash.; a nephew, Victor Marmo of Watsonville; and six cousins, including Peggy Nunes and Orrin Wagoner, both of Watsonville.
Her sister, Nella Marmo, died before her.
Services are 1 p.m. Friday at Pajaro Valley Memorial Park in Watsonville.

Joan Carol Howden
Services will be Saturday for Joan Carol Howden, who died May 1 at her La Selva Beach home from a long illness. She was 62.
Mrs. Howden was an Oakland native who moved to La Selva Beach in 1997 to retire. She spent eight years as an English professor at Tsuda College in Japan until her illness forced her to retire. She also was interested in Alternative Dispute Resolution, a means of solving disputes outside of the courtroom, such as mediation, arbitration and conciliation.
Mrs. Howden is survived by son Alexander Klikoff of Palo Alto; Alexandra Klikoff of La Selva Beach; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at La Selva Community Church.

Lola Mae Skelton
Services will be Thursday for Lola Mae Skelton, who died Friday at Watsonville Community Hospital of natural causes. She was 87.
Mrs. Skelton was born in Limestone County, Texas, and moved to the Corralitos area 56 years ago.
Mrs. Skelton worked as a label operator for Martinelli’s for 12 years. She was a member of the Bethel Tabernacle church and loved gardening and spending time with her family.
She is survived by husband Dwight; sons Bob of Watsonville, Lewie of Yakima, Wash., and Dan of Cedaredge, Colo.; sister Mildred Buchanan of Watsonville; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call today from 2-5 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. at Davis Memorial Chapel. Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the chapel with internment following at Pajaro Valley Memorial Park.

Irene E. Barbarito
Services will be Friday for Irene Evelyn Barbarito, who died Saturday in Santa Cruz. She was 82.
Mrs. Barbarito was born in Spalding, Neb., and lived in the Santa Cruz area for 35 years. She lived in Los Angeles previously, where she worked as a Bank of America loan officer for 25 years.
Mrs. Barbarito enjoyed special gatherings of the B of A Retirees Club and was a member of San Agustin Catholic Community. She loved to garden and spend time with her family.
She is survived by daughters Tina Schultz of Scotts Valley, Chris Standage of Seattle and Pam Barbarito of Santa Cruz; brothers George and Mike Szeliga of Omaha, Neb.; sisters Emma Driscoll of Omaha, Neb. and Florence Hayden of North Carolina; and three grandchildren.
Her husband, Vincent Barbarito, died in 1992.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday at San Agustin Catholic Church, 257 Glenwood Drive, Scotts Valley.
Mrs. Barbarito will be buried next to her husband at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Cirilo Ibarra Alvarez
Services will be today for Cirilo Ibarra Alvarez, who died Monday at Driftwood Health Care Center. He was 88.
Mr. Alvarez was a native of the Mexican state of Oaxaca before moving to Santa Cruz County.
He is survived by wife Maria L. Mendoza; daughters Georgia Ainsworth of Capitola and Ana Solis of Los Banos; son Gustavo Ibarra of Capitola; sister Ana Ibarra of Watsonville; brother Mateo Ibarra of New Mexico; 13 grandchildren; 33 nieces and 30 nephews. His son Pedro Ibarra died before him.
Mass and visitation will be at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, with services at noon.
