Services will be Sunday for former Santa Cruz City Councilwoman Charlotte Gertrude Melville, who died Aug. 31 at Dominican Hospital. She was 81.
Born at Mitchell Field, N.Y., where her father was stationed with the Army Air Corps, she was raised in Port Washington, N.Y.
She marriage her first husband, Amiel Loccisano, in 1944. They were divorced the next year.
While working at the naval base at Sands Point, Long Island, she met William Melville. They marriage in 1950.
The couple moved to Santa Cruz in 1970. When an access road to UC Santa Cruz was proposed, she helped found the community group "Western Limits" to oppose it.
That led to an interest in politics and in 1975 she was elected to the Santa Cruz City Council. She later unsuccessfully ran for the Board of Supervisors.
She spent much of the 1980s devoting time to music, arts and crafts. She sang with the Cabrillo Community Chorus and went on two European tours with the group. She also served on the boards of Senior Network Services and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. A seamstress and knitter, she began working with dyeing, spinning and weaving.
In 1990, she suffered a stroke. Her husband died three months later. She began attending classes at the Cabrillo Stroke Center. She served on the stroke center’s Student Council and helped found the Garage Gang for advanced students. She volunteered at the UC Santa Cruz arboretum library, Friends of the Library, the Literacy English program and Sienna House.
Melville is survived by daughters, Christina Meyer of Berkeley, Sue Burry of Soquel and Mary Jo Bonner of Plymouth, Minn.; son, Michael Melville of Soquel; brother, Stephen Webber of Rockport, Md.; and eight grandchildren.
Sister, Doris MacMillan died before her.
The service will be at 11 a.m. Sunday at Oakwood Memorial Park Chapel, 3301 Paul Sweet Road, Santa Cruz.
A wake will be held at her house after the service.

Dorothy D. Musitelli
Services will be Saturday for Dorothy Deliliah Musitelli, who died Tuesday in Ashland, Ore. She was 82.
Mrs. Musitelli was born in Sulphur Springs, Texas, and moved to Santa Cruz in 1946. In 1996, she moved to Washington, and had been living in Ashland for the past six months.
She worked as a real estate broker for many years, owning and operating Musitelli Realty in Santa Cruz.
She was a retired member of the California Realtors Association. She was also a member of the Santa Cruz Toastmistress Club. She enjoyed knitting, reading, watching baseball and spending time with her granddaughters.
She is survived by son Roy Musitelli of Medford, Ore., and brother Robby Orsburn of Utah.
Her husband, Angelo Musitelli, and son, Larry Musitelli, died before her.
Services are 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Villa Maria del Mar, 2-1918 E. Cliff Drive, Santa Cruz.
Arrangements are by Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives & Crematory in Medford.

Edward Silva
Services will be Friday for Edward Silva, who died Wednesday in Aptos. He was 83.
Born in Watsonville, Silva attended public schools there. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, Silva owned and managed the Apple Barn. He was named Farmer of the Year in 1981 by the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau.
He was a member of the Ag History Project, the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau, the Parajo Valley Rock Hounds, former director of the County Cross Roads and was a 56-year member of the American Legion. He enjoyed local history, gardening and reading.
Silva is survived by wife, Maybelle Silva of Aptos; daughter, Sue Blevins of Owasso, Okla.; son, Jeff Silva of Aptos; sister, Beverly Kelley; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Davis Memorial Chapel, 609 Main St., Watsonville.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Davis Memorial Chapel. Burial will be at Pajaro Valley Memorial.

Evelyn Nesbit Wells
Private services will be held for Evelyn Nesbit Wells, who died Monday at her home in Aptos. She was 85.
Wells made her home in Aptos for the past 19 years after moving here from Highland, Ill. She was an avid reader.
She is survived by daughters, Dolores Christensen of Escondido and Cherilyn Wells of Aptos; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Carlyle Wells, died before her in 1987.
Private graveside services will be in Seaside.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, 5001 Angel Canyon Road, Kanab, UT 84741-5000.
Arrangements are by the Paul Mortuary of Pacific Grove.

Elizabeth J. Vincent
Services have been held for Elizabeth Jacobs Vincent, who died Aug. 12 in Hyampom. She was 84.
Mrs. Vincent was raised in Santa Cruz and attended Holy Cross High School. She studied music at San Jose State University and worked in hospitals for 20 years.
She was a concert pianist who had a passion for classical music and reading.
Mrs. Vincent was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7263 Women’s’ Auxiliary.
She is survived by daughters Mary Granman, Viki Dalton and Helen Woelfel, all of Santa Cruz and Jean Anderson of Hyampom; sons William Vincent Jr. of Fresno, Stephen Vincent of Hyampom and John Vincent of Watsonville; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Her husband, William Vincent Sr., died in 1985 and her grandson, Gabriel Gurnoe, died in 1993.
Services were Aug. 17 in Hyampom.

Nancy Lu Hill Birr
No services are planned for Nancy Lu Hill Birr, who died Aug. 28 at her Santa Cruz home. She was 47.
Mrs. Birr was born in Piedmont and lived in Oakland and Carmel before moving to Santa Cruz several years ago.
She loved animals, and family members say they will miss her sense of humor.
She is survived by her mother, Barbara M. Hill of Carmel Valley; and a sister, Carol A. Hill of Santa Cruz.
Her father, Nathanael N. Hill, died before her.
Contributions are preferred to the Santa Cruz Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 2200 Seventh Ave., Santa Cruz, CA 95062, or to a favorite animal rescue organization.

Maddalena Bruzzone Giusto
Services will be held Monday for Maddalena Bruzzone Giusto, who died Thursday. She was 82.
Mrs. Giusto was born in Cogoleto, Italy. She moved to San Francisco in 1948 where she cared for elderly nuns as a nurse’s aide at St. Mary’s Hospital. She moved to Felton in 1970. After moving to Santa Cruz she worked at Dominican Hospital.
Mrs. Giusto was a member of St. Johns Catholic Church of Felton and the American Legion Auxiliary Volunteer Hospital Workers. She enjoyed cooking and gardening.
She is survived by son Domenico Giusto of San Francisco; sister Angela Bruzzone Roba of Cogoleto; one granddaughter; two great-grandsons; and several nephews and nieces.
Her husband, Ambrose Giusto, died in 1972, and son Jack Giusto in 1967.
A Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Monday at St. John’s Catholic Church, 120 Russell Ave., Felton. A rosary will precede the Mass at 9:30 a.m. A vigil service is 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the church. Friends may call from 6:30 p.m. until the service time. Burial is 2 p.m. Monday at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma.
