REDDING - Services for Joseph Xavior Cartmell, 76, of Redding will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Church in Keyport, N.J.
Mr. Cartmell died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in Detroit.
Born Dec. 3, 1924, in New York City, he moved to Shasta County in 1990 from Sayreville, N.J. He was a U.S. Army paratrooper, a veteran of World War II and recipient of a Bronze Star, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Redding and a member of St. Joseph's Parish in Redding.
Survivors include wife Maryjane; three sons; two daughters; three stepsons; two stepdaughters; and 14 grandchildren.
Arrangements are being handled by the family.
Walter Ferrando Sr.
ANDERSON - Walter Mario Ferrando Sr., 78, of Anderson died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Redding Medical Center.
Private family services will be conducted.
Born Feb. 22, 1922, in Crescent City, he moved to Shasta County in 1978 from Hoopa. He was an assistant superintendent for Klamath Trinity Unified School District, a World War II fighter pilot for the U.S. Navy on the USS Franklin, a member of Senior Citizens of Shasta County, a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Anderson, a member of the American Legion, a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Redding and a life member of the California Teachers Association.
Survivors include wife Dorothy; sons Ron of Hornbrook and Walter Jr. of Happy Valley; daughter Bonnie English of Brentwood; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, 3290 Bechelli Lane, Redding, CA 96002.

REDDING - Muriel "Connie" Acord, 89, of Redding died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Canyonwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Redding.
Private family services will be conducted.
Burial will be at Cottonwood Cemetery.
Born Sept. 7, 1911, in Parker, S.D., she moved to Shasta County in 1948 from Marysville.
She was a registered nurse.
Survivors include son Lyle of Anderson; daughter Carol Hill of Wasilla, Alaska; brothers Wayne, Harley and Floyd Costain, all of Milnor, N.D.; sisters Estell Costain of Portland, Ore., Mayvis Solberg of Fargo, N.D., and Eleanor Thompson of Vernonia, Ore.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

REDDING - Bernice May Winans, 95, of Redding died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare in Redding.

Born Oct. 13, 1905, in Alma, Wash., she moved to Shasta County in 1962 from Seattle.
She was the owner and operator of B. Winans Apparel in Redding.
Survivors include daughter Kathy Eastlund of McMinnville, Ore.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Arlene Moore
SHASTA LAKE - Arlene LaVonne Moore, 67, of Shasta Lake died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Redding Medical Center.

Born April 21, 1933, in Crockett, she moved to Shasta County in 1985 from Lakeview, Ore.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Northern California Brain Injury Group in Redding.
Survivors include husband Charles; two sons; daughter Doreen Megli of Eureka; and one grandchild.

Charles Desmond
REDDING - Memorial services and burial for Charles A. Desmond, 77, of Redding will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Santa Barbara Cemetery
in Santa Barbara.
Mr. Desmond died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at SunBridge Care Center for Redding.
Born Nov. 12, 1923, in Toledo, Ohio, he moved to Shasta County in 1989 from Santa Barbara. He was chief building inspector for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Federal Housing Administration in California, a construction representative for the architectural and engineering section of HUD in Santa Barbara, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of Disabled American Veterans, a former member of Redding Elks Lodge 1073 and a member of the Santa Barbara Board of Realtors.
Survivors include wife Marian; sons John of Redding, Michael of Hood River, Ore., and Dan of Lancaster; brother Bob of Green Bay, Wis.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Robert Troup
SHASTA LAKE - Robert Anthony Troup, 77, of Shasta Lake died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center in Redding.

Born Nov. 15, 1923, in San Francisco, he moved to Shasta County in 1965 from Sunnyvale. He was an installer/repairman for Pacific Telephone, a member of Telephone Pioneers of America, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a Pearl Harbor survivor.
Survivors include wife Fran; daughters Terri Sullivan of Cottonwood, Robin Kamboj of Davis, and Tami Moore of Shasta Lake; sisters Alice Neu of Redding and Ina of Lodi; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
