Wilmer Adolph Hornbostel
Wilmer Adolph Hornbostel died in Sutter-Davis Hospital Friday, Aug. 2, 2002 at age 82.
Born June 21, 1920, in Palmer, Kansas, Mr. Horbostel was the son of Earnest H. and Alwine Meyer Hornbostel. He graduated in 1943 from Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Neb., and started a 40-year teaching career. His first assignment was a one-room Lutheran school in Schuyler, Neb. Thereafter, he taught at Lutheran schools in St. Louis Mo., Independence Kansas, Fresno California, and Woodland where he moved in 1959 to be teaching principal at St. Paul's Lutheran School. When that school closed in 1963, he became a public school teacher at Laugenour, Plainfield, and 17 years at Lee Junior High School, retiring in 1983. He served Woodland Education Association as treasurer, school representative, and president. He was a member of California Retired Teachers Association and a life member of the national education honorary society, Phi Delta Kappa.
In upgrading his science knowledge, he attended many science classes at CSUS, UCD, and UOP in Stockton, as well as annual meetings of the Elementary School Science Association. At Lee, Mr. Hornbostel organized and managed the model rocket club. He was an amateur magician, an avocation since his own high school days, and gave shows through the years to various groups and birthday parties, using the name Merwil. He was active in Sacramento Area Magicians and helped young budding magicians to learn the craft. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Woodland Community Chorus, and Woodland-Davis Aeromodelers.
Mr. Hornbostel is survived by his wife of 25 years, Betty Logue Echols Hornbostel of Woodland; sons, Bruce Wilmer and wife Mary of Sacramento and Philip Martin of Woodland; daughter, Joy Elisabeth Webb and husband James of Roseville; granddaughters, Jinne Jill Horger and husband Jon and their son, Christian of Sacramento, Penelope Jane Yanez and children Shae Celeste and Evan Zane of Roseville, and David Jonathan of Sacramento; stepchildren, Marjorie Echols Sturtevant and husband Michael of Fairfax, Thomas Dean Echols and wife Louise and their children, Marshall Dean and Kristina Marie, Peter Harold Echols and wife Cherrill, and her son, Shawn Callahan, all of Woodland. He was also survived by his sister, Lulu Dankenbring of Lynn, Kan.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Beata Juergensen, in 1976; and stepson, James Marshall Echols, in 1997.
A memorial service is scheduled at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Gibson Road and Cottonwood Ave. in Woodland, with Pastor Henry Scherer officiating.
A private interment service for family members will take place at Monument Hill Memorial Park, Woodland.

Bruce Wilmer Hornbostel (1st of 2 obituaries)
A sudden heart attack took the life of Bruce Wilmer Hornbostel Feb. 12, 2005 at his home in Carmichael. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilmer A. and Beata Juergensen Hornbostel, in addition to stepbrother, James M. Echols. He was born in Independence, Kan., grew up in Woodland until moving to Sacramento 30 years ago. He was a 1966 graduate of Woodland High School and a long-time member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Woodland.
Bruce worked 18 years in State of California departments including Veterans Affairs, Housing Finance Agency, Public Employees Retirement System and Employment Development Department. He worked for 17 years at Sutter Health, most recently as information systems analyst. During these years, he spent 10 years teaching computer-related classes at Foothill College for the plumber's union.
The many talents and interests of Bruce Hornbostel included building computers, doing audio and disc jockey jobs for private parties, sailing, river rafting, softball and motorcycling. After being blessed to meet Mary, he cut back a little on his outside interests, but added in recent years traveling and cruising.
He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Mary C. Whalen Hornbostel; his brother, Philip Hornbostel; his sister and her husband, Joy and James Webb; his niece, Jinne Horger and husband John and son Christian; his niece, Penelope Yanez and children Shae and Evan and his nephew, David Jonathan Webb.
Echols family members are his stepmother, Betty Hornbostel Wegener; stepsister, Majorie Sturtevant and husband Michael; stepbrother, Thomas D. and wife Louise and their children, Marshall and Kristina; stepbrother, Peter H. and wife Cherrill and son Shawn.
Whalen family survivors are Bruce's mother-in-law, Gloria Whalen of Florida; father-in-law, James M. Whalen and his wife Judy of South Carolina; brothers-in-law, James E. and daughter, Katherine Ann; Thomas F. and wife Maribeth and their daughter Katherine Mary.
Bruce graduated from Woodland High School in 1966, attended UC Davis briefly and graduated from Sacramento City College. He thereafter took many classes in accounting, auditing and data processing. His friends were the beneficiaries of his computer skills.
Memorials may be directed to The Alzheimer's Association, 530 Bercut Dr., Sacramento 95814 in honor of his father.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 23, 11 a.m. at St. Ignatius Catholic Church on Arden Way in Sacramento, the site of Bruce and Mary's wedding in 1994. A private interment will be at Woodland's Monument Hill Cemetery the following day. North Sacramento Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.

HORSFIELD
Delnor "Del" Starr Horsfield
Delnor "Del" Starr Horsfield died Jan. 4, 2005, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. She was 84.
Born Nov. 9, 1920, in Medicine Hat, Alberta, she marriage Keith Horsfield May 15, 1941, and ranched with him in southern Alberta until 1960.
They moved to Santa Rosa - where her children attended Montgomery High School and Santa Rosa Junior College - then to Davis in 1969, where she owned a health food store, The Health Hut. She was a member of Soroptimist International of Davis. In 1973, she and her husband retired to Westbank, British Columbia.
After her husband's death in 1977, she remained active in the Westbank United Church, where she sang in the choir and volunteered in the thrift shop.
Her family says she enjoyed gardening, swimming and traveling to exotic places. In July 2004, she said goodbye to her friends in Westbank and moved to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, to live near her youngest daughter, Holly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith Horsfield; and her two brothers, Bud and Charlie Starr.
She is survived by her five children, Brian and his wife Louanne of Federal Way, Wash.; Lynne and her husband Paul of San Francisco; Janet and her husband Doug of Bay of Islands, New Zealand; Vicki and her husband Ron of Montreal, Canada; and Holly and her husband Rick of Athol, Idaho; and six grandchildren, Amy and her husband Gord, Tracy and her husband Brendan, Riley, Cayleigh, Darin and Ryan.
She is further survived by two great-grandchildren, Malcolm and Gwyneth; as well as her sister, Ethel Husby and sister-in-law, Thelma Starr.
A memorial service will be held this spring in Westbank.
HORSLEY
Franz Allen Horsley
Franz Allen Horsley passed away peacefully on Dec. 27, 2005 at his beloved home in Danville, California, at the age of 94 years. He was born on Oct. 5, 1911 in Kellogg, Idaho, and soon moved to his pioneer family’s headquarters In Waterford, California. He resided in Danville for 55 years. Allen graduated from the School of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1934, and then began a distinguished 35-year career with Shell Oil. He marriage his college sweetheart, Kathleen Fanoe, in 1937, and started a family that would eventually extend to three sons, seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
During his time with Shell, he received eight patents. He was instrumental in bringing synthetic rubber from the test tube to actual full scale production early in World War II when the nation had lost its sources of natural rubber. His work was invaluable to the war effort. He retired as a senior executive and head of a division for Shell. In 1964 he bought an apricot and almond orchard in Winters. He was active in farming until his death and always loved the country and the freedom of outdoor life. An accomplished sailor, he won the San Francisco Bay championship in the Mermaid class as a member of the Richmond Yacht Club. He loved to fly fish and spent some of his most cherished moments on the Tuolumne River in his youth, on the streams of Yosemite with his sons, and at the Klamath River in his 80’s and 90’s. Allen was active in community service throughout his life. He was a member of the school board in San Ramon Valley for 10 years. He never accepted injustice, leading and participating in many successful legal battles. He never gave up. He never quit. His word was his bond. He was a man of the century and will be sorely missed by his family and all those he touched. A scholar, a knight, a father, farmer and a friend, Allen will be remembered by all who had the good fortune to know him.

Steven J. Hough
Steven J. Hough died on April 12, 2005, at Stanford Medical Center, after a lengthy battle with leukemia. He was 50 years old.
Friends are invited to visit with the family from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Davis Community Church, 412 C St. The funeral begins at 11 a.m. A reception follows in the Davis Community Church Fellowship Hall.
Born Oct. 19, 1954, in Camden, N.J., he was a Davis resident for the past 11 years. He worked for 29 years in engineering, maintenance and management, most recently as a tomato operations engineer for Campbell Soup Co.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Holland Hough of Davis; his son, Steven Charles Hough of Pennsylvania; his daughter, Laura Elizabeth Hough of Davis; his mother, Phyllis Pere and her husband John of Lumberton, N.J.; and his father, David H. Hough and his wife Jackie of San Diego.
He is further survived by his sister, Jan Bottcher of Ridgewood, N.J.; and his brother, David A. Hough of Bellevue, Wash.
Remembrances may be made in his name to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, CA 95617.

Frances Dee House
Frances Dee House passed away on April 7, 2005, at her home in Winters. Born on June 12, 1943, in Pueblo, Colorado, she was 61 years old.
Fran was a 41-year resident of Yolo County. A waitress and lead server all of her life, she also took care of people in need.
She is survived by her daughter Diana Jacobs, of Medway, Maine; sons Bill Easely, of Whitesboro, Texas and Matthew House, of Winters; sisters Jean Lawrence, and Patricia Reed, both of Woodland, and brothers John Roark, of Woodland and Steve Roark, of Alverta. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Fran was preceded in death by her mother, Mable Roark, her father Henry Roark and her brother, Kennith Roark.
A remembrance service was held on Monday, April 11, at Gateway Chapel in Winters. Pastor Steve Rutledge presided.
Memorials may be made in her name to Yolo Hospice, P. O. 1014, Davis, CA 95616, or to the American Cancer Society.

Alden Franklin "Frank" Houser
Alden Franklin "Frank" Houser died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2005, in Sacramento. He was 72.
Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday at Monument Hill Memorial Park, 35036 County Road 22 in Woodland, with the Rev. John Hill officiating.
Born in Blevins, Ark., to Alden and Essie (Clayburn) Houser, where he resided and attended local schools, he moved to Knights Landing as a young man. He became a Woodland resident in 1953 and resided there for the past 52 years. He was self-employed, and began Housers Septic Tank Service, where he worked until his retirement in 2004, with his business continuing on. He was a 15-year member of Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. No. 1299 and the Woodland Church of Christ on Kentucky Avenue.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Mary Houser of Woodland; daughter Trudy Medina of West Sacramento; sons Robert Barron of Woodland and James Houser of Oklahoma; and five grandchildren.
The family requests any memorial contributions be made to Yolo Hospice in his memory.
