John Elbridge Flanders
John Elbridge Flanders, a Davis resident for the past 24 years, died peacefully at his home Nov. 30, 2003. He was 86.
Born Oct. 14, 1917, in Aurora, Ill., to Fred and Mabel Flanders, he spent most of his working life in the oil and chemical industries.
He was Bechtel's project manager in London for the Pertamina polypropylene plant at the Pladju Refinery in Palembang, Indonesia -- the first such plant in Southeast Asia. He joined Bechtel in 1966 as a senior supervising engineer on the Shell Milford Haven Refinery and spent seven years alternating between offices in London and The Hague. From 1967 to 1970, he was successively chief project engineer and chief engineer at The Hague.
During his pre-Bechtel career he was a project engineer on the Eli Lilly Tippecanoe Laboratories, which one of the first Factory Management magazine design-excellence awards. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Iowa State University, he took his first job in distillation and light oil processing.
He retired to Davis in 1979, following what his family called a long and distinguished career.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gayle Flanders of Davis; children, Sara Flanders of London, Marian Flanders and her husband Leo Romero of Davis, John Flanders Jr. and his wife Allene of Berkeley, Martha Flanders of New York and Kristin Flanders and her husband Bartlett Sher of Seattle; grandchildren, Nathaniel Patrick John Martin, Corrina Bonomo, Eleanor Flanders, Emma Flanders, Andrew Flanders Morrison, Catherine Flanders and Lucia Hathorne Flanders Sher; and great grandson, Peter Henry Bonomo.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the University Covenant Church, 1715 Anderson Road.
Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.
FLANERY
Lucian Max Flanery
Lucian Max Flanery died after a brief bout with cancer in Mercy General Hospital on Wednesday, July 10, 2003, at age 58.
Born Aug. 25, 1944, in Vallejo, Mr. Flanery grew up in Woodland and attended Woodland schools. He was the son of Myrt and Lela Flanery, longtime residents of Woodland. He graduated from Woodland High School in 1962 and served a three-year tour of duty in the Army. He was a Spec 5 sergeant, serving in the Special Forces in Germany and Italy. He later earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Sacramento State University and went on to serve in several departments in the state of California. He worked for the Division of Mines and Geology, in the Conservation Department. He had worked as an editor and photographer for Geology Magazine, and also created numerous shows and exhibits for mines and geology. He retired from state service on June 20, 2003. He had lived in Sacramento for the last 25 years.
Survivors include his wife, Colleen Madrid of Sacramento; stepson, Sean Madrid of Washington; brother, Michael Flanery of Lemen Valley, Nev.; sister, Jan Flanery Cauble of Woodland; nieces, Laura and Alyssa Cauble, also both of Woodland; and numerous aunts; uncles and grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nautilus Society of Sacramento.
Services: A celebration of his life will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, at St. John's United Church of Christ in Woodland, followed by a reception in the social hall.
FLACH
Klaus Werner Flach
Soil scientist and Davis resident Klaus Werner Flach died July 8, 2004, at Sutter Davis Hospital. He was 77.
A native of Germany, he was born March 24, 1927, in Kolbermoor, Bavaria, to Werner and Bianca Kolmgren Flach.
He earned a bachelor's degree in agriculture at the Technical University of Munich. He moved to the United States in 1950 and earned a master's and doctorate in soil science at Cornell University.
During his 30-year career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service, he was a research soil scientist and, in Washington, D.C., was director of the Soil Survey and associate deputy chief for Natural Resource Assessment.
He represented the United States on a variety of international and United Nations environmental summits and was a leader in improving the technology for classification of soils.
After retiring in 1988, he became a senior research scholar at Colorado State University and taught at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
He is a fellow of the Soil Science Society of America and a member of the German Soil Science Society and Sigma Xi.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Flach of Davis, his son Andrew Flach of Tucson, Ariz., his daughter Martha Flach of New York City, his brother Andreas Flach of Tubingen, Germany, and stepdaughters Marsha Stephens and Marian Gilbert of Virginia and Marla Gilbert of West Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Elisabeth Goding Flach.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the sanctuary at Davis Community Church, 412 C St. A reception and celebration of life will follow in the adjoining Fireside Room.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Smithsonian Institution Soils Exhibit, care of the Soil Science Society of America Agronomic Science Foundation, 677 S. Segoe Road, Madison, WI 53711. He was a member of the Smithsonian Exhibit design committee and, according to his family, was intent on seeing that an educational exhibit on soils become part of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

FLANERY
Lucian Myrlas "Myrt" Flanery
Lucian Myrlas "Myrt" Flanery died at Cottonwood Healthcare Center Sunday, Sept. 4 at age 80.
Mr. Flanery was born July 24, 1925 in Culp, Ark. He had been a Yolo County resident for about 60 years. He worked at the Benicia Arsenal during World War II and later returned to Yolo County to work in farming. After several years of working for the Davey Tree Service, he went to work for the city of Woodland's tree department. After serving as a volunteer firefighter, he made firefighting a permanent career, joining the Woodland Fire Department in 1956. He was later promoted to shift captain and served as captain until his retirement in 1975. He assisted with the renovation of the Woodland Opera House in the 1970s. A longtime singer and musician, he played with the Senior Melody Makers during dances at the Senior Center in Woodland for 12 years.
Survivors include Mr. Flanery's wife of 62 years, Lela Flanery of Woodland; his daughter, Jan Flanery Cauble and her husband Bill, all of Woodland; his son, Michael Flanery of Nevada; his granddaughters, Laura Cauble and Alyssa Cauble; his sister, Kizzie Berry of Sacramento; his sisters-in-law, Pat Watson and her husband LeRoy of Vacaville, Mildred Martin of Woodland and Loretta Perry of Virginia; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his son, Lucian Max Flanery, his daughter, Joyce Ellen Flanery; his mother, Ann Flanery; his father, Alex Flanery; his brothers, Elmer Flanery, Charles Flanery, Jewel "Red" Flanery and Morris "Whitey" Martin; and his sisters, Maxine Lewis and Mabel Merrell.

A funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 at McNary's with Pastor Bill Schroeder of St. John's United Church of Christ officiating. A graveside service will follow at Monument Hill Memorial Park. McNary's Chapel of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.
FLEISCHAUER
Florence Fleischauer
Florence Fleischauer died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at age 82.
Born Jan. 17, 1921, in Orland, Ca., Mrs. Fleischauer was a resident of Woodland for 75 years. She graduated from Woodland High School in 1939 and remained an active member of that class. She marriage her husband, Winton, in 1940 and enjoyed 52 years of marriage with him. Mrs. Fleischauer was active in Holy Rosary Parish, the Italian Catholic Federation and other groups over the years. Mrs. Fleischauer was preceded in death by her husband Winton Fleischauer; and her sister, Aida Romey.
Survivors include her daughter, Bonnie Sublett; grandchildren, Destyn, Taylor and Ross Sublett; sister, Yolanda Sarah Swanson; nieces and nephews, Sara Romey Church, Jeanette Schulze, Beatrice Haralson, Victor Swanson, John Fleischauer and Yvonne Bennett.
A Funeral service is scheduled at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 7, 2003, at Holy Rosary Church, 301 Walnut St., Woodland, with interment to follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Woodland.

FLESNER
Ruby Mae Flesner
Ruby Mae Flesner died in Woodland Memorial Hospital Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at age 81.
Born Aug. 7, 1920, in Yarmouth, Iowa, Mrs. Flesner had been a Yolo County resident for 35 years. She was the daughter of the late Ben and Gladys Gittings. She and her husband Leo Flesner owned and operated a Union 76 Station for over 10 years.
Mrs. Flesner is survived by her children, Janice Marlene Newman of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, C. Jean Westerbeck of Washington, Ill. and Benjamin Warren Miller of Houston, Texas; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her sisters, Helen Metzger and Verlee M. Connop of Winfield, Iowa.
Mrs. Flesner was preceded in death by her husband, Leo E. Flesner on Sept. 2, 1988; and brothers, William B. Gittings and Clifford Gittings.
A graveside service is scheduled at 2 p.m., Friday, April 12, in Monument Hill Memorial Park, Woodland, with Pastor Fred Jordan, officiating.

FLETCHER
Millard G. Fletcher
Millard G. Fletcher died at Little Rock, Ark. Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at age 73.
Born June 8, 1930, in Lake City, Ark. Mr. Fletcher had been a Yolo County resident for 28 years. He was the son of the late Rudy V. and Edith (Scroggins) Fletcher. He also been a resident of Ida, Ark. for 27 years, and established Fletcher's Grocery and Hardware Store. He was a member of Sugar Loaf Masonic Lodge No. 414 and Pleasant Ridge Union Church.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy (Crites) Fletcher of Ida, Ark.; sons, Dale Fletcher of Cabot, Ark., Robert Fletcher of Folsom, Jack Fletcher of Ida, Ark., and Rudy Fletcher of Hot Springs, Ark.; daughter, Wendy Fletcher of Bigelow, Ark.; brother, Jesse Fletcher of Woodland; sister, Brenda Sue Minatre of Sacramento; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his sister, Hazel Swayze.
Arrangements are under the direction of Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. of Arkansas.
Services: Visitation was held Thursday, Oct. 30, at Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. of Heber Springs. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Friday, also in Olmstead Chapel with a Masonic service. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. in Pine Log Cemetery at Brookland, Ark.
