ALDER

Henry Ludwig Alder

Henry Ludwig Alder, a Davis resident and professor of mathematics at UC Davis since 1948, died on Nov. 6, 2002, at his home from complications caused by colon cancer. He was 80 years old.

He was born as a Swiss citizen in Duisburg, Germany, on March 26, 1922, to Ludwig and Otti Alder. In 1933, he moved with his family to Zurich, Switzerland, where he completed high school and one semester at the Swiss Polytechnic Institute.

In 1941, he moved with his family to Berkeley, where he studied chemistry and mathematics at UC Berkeley receiving a bachelor of arts degree in both fields in 1942. He continued graduate work in mathematics and received a Ph.D. in math in 1947, after interruption of his studies by service in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1944 to 1945.

Appointed a math instructor at UC Berkeley in 1947, Alder transferred to UC Davis in 1948 where he remained, advancing through the ranks to full professor.

His primary field of interest in mathematics was number theory, specifically partition theory. He also had a strong interest in statistics and regularly taught statistics courses at UCD, which resulted in several textbooks. He was honored for his teaching excellence with the UC Davis Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1976.

Alder actively served the University of California. At was a department chairman and served on many department committees at the campus level. He was the first chairman of the Committee on Culturally Disadvantaged Students, and a member of the Committee on Teaching. From 1992 to 2000, he chaired the steering committee of Minority Undergraduate Research Participation in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences.

At the statewide level, he chaired the Board of Admissions and Relations with Schools of the UC system, and was a member of the UC Academic Council and a member of the Assembly of the Academic Senate.

Alder was the first national president of Mu Alpha Theta, the National High School and Junior College Mathematics Club, from 1956 to 1959 and received its International Distinguished Service Award in 1965. He also received a Certificate of Merit from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in 1975. He was the national secretary of the Mathematical Association of America from 1960 to 1975 and its national president between 1977 and 1978. He received its Award for Distinguished Service to Mathematics in 1980, the most prestigious award conferred by the organization.

He also received the association's Lester R. Ford Award for Expository Writing in 1970. He served on many of its committees, including chairman of its Committee on Awards for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics from 1992 to 1999.

Alder also served as chairman of the Council of Scientific Society Presidents in 1980 and was a member of the international bodies. In 1981 he served as chairman of the Commission on the International Mathematical Olympiad. In 1982, he was appointed a member of the state Board of Education by Gov. Jerry Brown, the first mathematician and first UC faculty member to be appointed to that board. He served on many of the committees appointed by the board including in 1996 and 1997 the California Mathematics Framework Committee for grades K-12.

He served numerous professional mathematical journals as editor, member of its governing board and in other capacities. He was particularly active with the Pacific Journal of Mathematics, where he served as a member of its Board of Governors from 1960 to the present, as vice chairman of the board from 1960 to 1995 and as chair of its Investment Committee from 1970 to the present.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, the former Benne Bernice Daniel; his son Dr. Lawrence J. Alder and his wife Janice T. of Mountain View; two granddaughters, Allison and Catherine Alder; two brothers, Dr. Berni J. Alder of El Cerrito and Dr. Charles K. Alder of Danville; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A viewing will be held Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Chapel. A memorial service will be announced later. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Henry L. Alder Graduate Fellowship on Mathematics Fund, c/o U.C. Davis Foundation, University of California, One Shields Ave., Davis, CA 95616.

The UC Davis department of mathematics has planned, in coordination with Henry Alder's family, a campus memorial service to be held Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. in the AGR Room of the Buehler Alumni & Visitors' Center. Alder died on Nov. 6, 2002.

This will be the university community's opportunity to honor Alder's contributions to the department, university and his achievements in the discipline. Among the scheduled speakers is Peter Rock, dean of mathematical and physical sciences in the College of Letters and Science.

ALDERETE

Enriqueta Cisneros Alderete

Enriqueta Cisneros Alderete died at her home in Woodland Tuesday, Dec. 20 at age 78.

Mrs. Alderete was born Sept. 2, 1927 in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico to Luis and Soledad (Zamora) Cisneros. She had been a Yolo County resident for 32 years. A wife and homemaker for 57 years, she also worked at the Contadina cannery in Woodland for 19 years.

Survivors include Mrs. Alderete's husband of 57 years, Jose Alderete of Woodland; her daughters, Maria E. Dominguez, Enriqueta Alderete, Alicia A. Roa and her husband Fernando and Carmen Alderete and her husband Juan Romero; her sons, Jesus Alderete and Jose A. Alderete, all of Woodland; 20 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Maria L. Strachan, Josefina C. Fuentes both of Mexico; and her brothers, Jose Cisneros of Los Angeles, Emilio Cisneros of Woodland and Luis Cisneros of Mexico. She was preceded in death by her sons, Gregorio Alderete, Javier Cisneros and Raymundo Cisneros; her grandson, Jesus A. Alderete; and her parents.

The family requests memorials in Mrs. Alderete's name be directed to the Holy Rosary Catholic Church Building Fund, 500 California St., Woodland, 95695.

Services: A funeral is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23 at Kraft Bros. Chapel, 175 Second St., Woodland; with interment to follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Deacon Antonio Fernandez will officiate. Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors is assisting the family with arrangements.

ALDERETE

Jesus Adalid Alderete, Jr.

Jesus Adalid Alderete Jr. died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at Woodland Memorial Hospital. He was 24 years old..

Born Jan. 1, 1979, in Woodland, Mr. Alderete was the son of Jesus and Irene Alderete. He had lived in Woodland his entire life. Mr. Alderete was a graduate of Woodland High School. He was a songwriter.

Survivors include his parents, Jesus and Irene Alderete and grandparents, Enriqueta and Jose Alderete.

He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and other family members.

Mr. Alderete was preceded in death on Dec. 19, 2001, by his uncle Gregorio Alderete.

The family requests memorials be directed to Yolo Federal Credit Union, Woodland, 95695, in care of memorial trust fund No. 52895 for Jesus Alderete.

Arrangements are under the direction of Kraft Bros. of woodland.

Services: Visitation is scheduled at 9:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 19, 2003, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church at 301 Walnut St., Woodland. A funeral mass is scheduled at 10:30 am., Friday, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

ALEXANDER

Arnold Drexel Alexander

Arnold Drexel Alexander died in Woodland Memorial Hospital Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at age 90.

Born Feb. 3, 1913, in Oklahoma, Mr. Alexander had been a Yolo County resident for 31 years and worked as a welder for a large crane manufacturing company for more than 25 years.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred (Snyder) Alexander; sons, Jimmy Alexander, Mark Alexander and wife Jeanne, all of Woodland, and Ken Alexander of Yuba City; grandchildren, Michelle Scott of Hillsborough, Pa., Tobie Dupree of Ojai, Season Alexander of Woodland, and Kenneth Alexander Jr. of Paradise; and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his sister, Aleta White of Texas. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Joe Alexander Jr. and Burrell Alexander.

The family requests memorials be directed to the charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors of Woodland. Direct inquiries to 662-4658, or http://www.legacy.com.

ALEXANDER

Barbara E. Alexander

Barbara E. Alexander died on Jan. 26, 2000, at Sutter Davis Hospital. Born on Jan. 24, 1921, in Anadarko, Okla., she was 79.

She served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II.

She attended UC Berkeley and UC Davis. She received her master's degree in microbiology and worked at UC Davis as a microbiologist in veterinary medicine for 30 years. She retired from UC Davis in 1978.

A Davis resident since 1967, she was a volunteer for the Sutter Davis Hospital Foundation and worked in the Travelaires office at the Davis Senior Center. She was a past Girl Scout leader, a member of the UC Davis Bowling League and was an avid golfer. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Robert B. Alexander of Davis; her five children, Robert B. Alexander Jr. and his wife Judith of Davis, Gary F. Alexander of Pahoa, Hawaii, Peggy Sue Alexander of Sacramento, Ann Finch and her husband Bob of Woodburn, Ore., and Mary Gillis and her husband Jay of Davis; 13 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass at 2 p.m. Monday at St. James Catholic Church, 200 W. 14th St., Davis. Private interment will take place at the Davis Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made in her name to the Davis Senior Center, 646 A St. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.

ALEXANDER

Gertrude Alexander

Gertrude Alexander died April 6, 2000. Born May 4, 1924, in Port Orchard, Wash., to Cecil Irwin Beal and Alice Smith Beal, she was 75.

She was a retired food service manager with the Mount Diablo Unified School District.

She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Davis, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Woodland Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter H. Prater, who died in 1980; and her brother, Al Bard.

She is survived by her husband of five years, Edwin Alexander; son, Walter H. Prater Jr.; three daughters, Karen Johnson of Davis, Phyllis O'Farrell of Paradise and Linda Meyers of Davis; seven grandchildren, Brandon Johnson of Davis, Tonya Meyers of Davis, Shane O'Farrell of Sacramento, Denise O'Farrell of Sacramento and Ray, Richard and Robert Prater, all of Tulsa, Okla.; four brothers, Robert Beal of Port Orchard, Wash., Tom Beal of Vancouver, Wash., Bunny Mode of Junction City, Ore., and Ralph Beal of Roseburg, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral Monday at 10 a.m. at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St. The Rev. Larry Love will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Lawn Memorial Park in Sacramento.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, CA 95617.

ALEXANDER

Leslie Alexander

Leslie Alexander passed away peacefully at home early Tuesday morning, Feb. 25, 2003. She was 70.

Leslie was born June 16, 1932, in Sebastopol, California, to William Frank and Gladys Margaret Overholtzer Luhr Weait. She was a first-generation American on her father's English side, and a second-generation Northern Californian on her mother's American side.

Leslie lived in the San Francisco Bay Area, Willows, and Sacramento, California, before moving to Woodland, where she resided continuously since 1964.

A bookkeeper by trade, Leslie went to work at 16. She worked before, during, and after raising her three daughters, retiring from Yolo County in December 1993, after 21 years of service.

Beloved mother, grandmother, godmother, and true friend, Leslie was a life-long reader, art lover, cat lover, and world citizen. She loved the ocean, her 1987 trip to Europe, and a good lunch with family and friends. Survivors include her childhood best friend Betty Wilcox Lusich, her daughter Susan Alexander of Woodland and Berkeley, her daughter Laura Alexander of Woodland, and grandchildren Matthew Alexander LaPorta and Jessica Diane LaPorta of Seattle, Washington. She was preceded in death by her middle daughter, Cindy Alexander LaPorta, on Dec. 7, 2002.

A memorial Mass will be held Friday, February 28, at 10 a.m. at Holy Rosary Church in Woodland, followed by a potluck Feast in Leslie's memory at Holy Rosary Community Center. Interment will be private.

Donations in Leslie's memory may be made to Woodland Elderly Nutrition, Yolo Adult Day Health Center, or Yolo Hospice. Arrangements are under the direction of Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors of Woodland.
