Margaret “Peggy” Kerstetter
Surrounded by her children and granddaughters, Margaret “Peggy” Kerstetter died Jan. 28, 2006, in Auburn after a valiant fight against cancer. She was 73.
In accordance with her wishes, no services will be held. Her ashes are to be spread in Wayalusing, Pa., where she spent her summers during her childhood.
“Peggy, whose beauty, generosity and fun loving spirit touched all with whom she came in contact, will be remembered for her involvement in and commitment to philanthropic organizations, ” her family says.
She is survived by her children David, Debbie and Derek; her daughter in-law Terri; her son-in-law Frank; her mother, Margaret “Mac” Brumbaugh; her brother, Bucky Brumbaugh and his wife Janet; and her granddaughters Kayla, Courtney and Shelby.
She is also survived by friends who have shared adventures from Micronesia to Mexico, hikes throughout California, and a love of the arts and literature.
She lived in Davis for 13 years before moving to Auburn.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions to be sent to the P.E.O. Foundation, P.E.O. Executive Office, 3700 Grand Ave., Des Moines, IA 50312-2899.
BROWN
Charles Robert Brown
Charles Robert Brown died Sept. 1, 2005, at Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento. He was 58 years old.
He was born in Sacramento on Oct. 15, 1946, to Charles and Jane (Gregg) Brown. He attended area schools, graduating from Winters High School in 1964.
A professional truck driver, Brown was employed for 35 years by Albright Trucking of Woodland, and Valley Farm Trucking and Antonini Trucking, both of Yuba City. He retired in 1995.
He is survived by his sons, Martin Brown of San Francisco and Eric Brown of Yuba City; stepson, Ronnie of Colorado; a sister, Carolyn Childress of Woodland; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Jane Brown.
A celebration of life service for Brown will be held at a later date, his family said. Evergreen Funeral Service of Woodland is assisting with the arrangements.
EAKLE
Helene A. Eakle
Helene Azlie Eakle died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at Alderson Convalescent Hospital in Woodland after a long illness at age 96.
Eakle was born March 31, 1906, in Upper Lake, to Percy and Lulu (Clark) Polk.
Family members said Eakle was a devoted homemaker and enjoyed being a member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, Eastern Star and was active in the United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Harold Eakle, who died July 8, 1993.
She is survived by her son, Frank Eakle and his wife, Geri, of Woodland; daughter, Mildred Contreras of Sacramento; sister, Marilyn Kerwin of Lakeport; brothers, James T. Polk of San Jose and Clair Jones of Upper Lake; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her brother Percy Polk and two grandsons, Mark Eakle and Lawrence Contreras.
A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, July 11, at the United Methodist Church at Second and North streets in Woodland.
Burial will follow in the family plot at Woodland Cemetery. Following the burial, a reception will take place in the Masonic Temple, 228 Palm Ave., Woodland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her honor to the United Methodist Church in Woodland.
Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors is assisting the family with arrangements.
EARNEST
Cheryl Lynn Earnest
Cheryl Lynn Earnest died in her Woodland home Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at age 51.
Born Feb. 26, 1952, in Oakland, Ms. Earnest had been a Yolo County resident for 40 years. She was a Woodland High School graduate.
Survivors include her father, John McDermott; son Timothy Earnest, both of Woodland; daughter, Lisa Aaragon and husband Tino; and grandchildren, Cynthia, Monica, Mathew and Marco Aaragon, all of Morrilton, Ark.
Services: Cremains will be returned to her family.
EASTIN
Daniel Hale Eastin
Daniel Hale Eastin, a fifth-generation San Franciscan, died Sept. 16, 2004, in Chico. He was 59.
Born May 16, 1945, he was a Vietnam veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. For many years, he worked in commercial refrigeration and was a member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union 467 of San Mateo County.
His family says he enjoyed camping and fishing and his pet dogs. He was an avid reader of history and mysteries. Family members recall him as generous. He was the kind of person who would stop to help someone whose car had broken down. He loved to read poetry out loud, a tradition he learned from his Kentucky-born, storytelling father.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Dorothy Eastin.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Eastin of Hayward; son, Daniel Eastin, his wife Flora and their children Fallon and Devon of Hoover, Ala.; daughter, Dawn Marie Ching, her husband Kyle and their children George Marcus and Candyce Sannadan of Red Bluff; and son, Cameron Eastin, and his partner Jeff Quinto of Pleasanton.
He is also survived by his sister, Delaine Eastin of Davis; his aunt, Jean Robert of Lakeport and his aunt June Eastin Withington and Uncle "Buzz" Withington of Santa Rosa. He is further survived by numerous cousins.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to a local chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or to Alcoholics Anonymous. The family will conduct a private service and scatter his ashes at sea.
EATON
Lafayette Claud "Doc" Eaton, Jr.
Lafayette Claud "Doc" Eaton Jr. of Vallejo died April 24, 2005, at the Veterans Medical Facility in Martinez. He was 87.
Son of Lafayette Claud and Maud Pitchford Gupton Eaton, he was born June 2, 1917, in Henderson, N.C. During his early years, he lived in South Carolina, and in 1937 he joined the U.S. Navy.
He served on the North Atlantic run to Murmansk, Russia; at Guadalcanal in the South Pacific; at Omaha Beach on D-Day in France; and at Okinawa in the North Pacific where he was critically wounded when kamikazes crashed into his ship, the USS Emmons.
After more than two years of hospitalization, he was granted special dispensation to remain on active duty, and he served 12 more years stationed in Vallejo.
He later returned to college and had a second career working for the state of California. For many years he was Scoutmaster of Troop 32. After retirement, he researched and wrote books on family genealogy. He also began painting and became a prolific artist.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lillian; his sister, Mary Cox of Mauldin, S.C.; and sons, Lafayette Claud "Bud" of Santiago, Chile, and Jim of Davis.
He is further survived by granddaughters Heather of Santiago, and Melanie of Yamhill, Ore.; great-grandchildren Arleen and Guillermo; great-great-grandson Jessy; and Kathy Krentz Eaton Kennedy, mother of his granddaughters.
No formal services will be held. Private family memorial services will be held at a later date. His ashes will be scattered at sea.
EBBINGHAUSEN
Howard Stanton Ebbinghausen
Howard Stanton Ebbinghausen died in Novato Monday, March 4, 2002, at age 66.
Born April 16, 1935, Mr. Ebbinghausen was a native of Woodland. He was the son of the late Elwood Carl and Grace Ebbinghausen. He attended Woodland High School. He worked for Sanitary Dairy for a few years prior to joining the U.S. Army in 1959 and serving four years in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1965.
Mr. Ebbinghausen settled down in Novato where he managed an old-fashioned deli in San Rafael for many years. After retiring. he enjoyed mountain climbing and hiking which took him to locations such as Tibet, Nepal and other countries.
Mr. Ebbinghausen is survived by his brother, Dale Ebbinghausen of Woodland; and sisters, Judi Reber of Petaluma and Carol O'Neil of Auburn, Wash.
A memorial service was held in Novato.
