Hollis B. Butler
Hollis B. Butler died on Nov. 7, 1998, at Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento. He was 78.

He was born on Aug. 13, 1920, in De Kalb, Texas, and came to Davis is 1944.

He worked for the Yolo County Mosquito Abatement District for more than 28 years as a mosquito controller.

He was a member and past president of the Davis Lions Club and past governor and charter member of the Oddfellows of Davis, The Eagles of Sacramento and Rebekahs of Davis and the Loyal Order of the Moose Davis Lodge No. 2260.

He was a patrol officer for the Yolo County Sportsmen's Association for many years.

Family members said he was a very social person who was very devoted to all of the organizations in which he was a member.

He is preceded in death by a son, Lawrence Lee Butler.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Margaret Butler of Davis; his two children, William Butler of Davis and his wife, Pamela, and Carel Bowers of Davis and her husband, Randy; and his sister, Marie Batchelor of Tyler, Texas.

He also leaves his four grandchildren, Brett Burton Butler of Davis, Wayne E. Lenhart Jr. of Norwalk, Ohio, Brian E. Lenhart of Norwalk, Ohio, and Steven Troy Lenhart of Klamath, Calif.; his three great-grandchildren, Heather T. Lenhart, Jordan Michael Lenhart and Ashley T. Lenhart, all of Norwalk, Ohio.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St. They are also invited to attend a graveside service at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Davis Cemetery, 820 Pole Line Road.

Joseph A. Lopes III
Joseph Anthony Lopes III died on Nov. 6, 1998, at Woodland Memorial Hospital. He was 45.

He was born in Sacramento on Sept. 29, 1953, to Joseph A. Lopes Jr. and Michael Lopes.

He was a resident of Yolo County for 33 years. Along with his father, Joseph Lopes Jr., he ran a commercial sugar beet harvesting business for many years.

He took care of the Northern California harvesting of sugar beets while his father did the same in Southern California. The younger Lopes did commercial harvesting until his health no longer allowed him to do so.

He is survived by his four sisters, Jacque Peters of Anderson and her husband Ernie, Izzy Lopes Troth of Davis and her husband Ray, Paulette Mercado of Woodland and her husband Joe, and Nina Lopes of Davis; his grandmother, Thelma Lopes of Galt; and his ex-wife and good friend, Maria Jett of Woodland.

He is also survived by nine nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Olivia Lopes; his grandfather, Joe A. Lopes Sr.; his father, Joe Lopes Jr.; and his mother, Michael Lopes.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at McNary's Chapel of Woodland.

Alvin A. Klose
Woodland resident Alvin A. Klose died at his home on Nov. 8, 1998, six weeks after the death of his wife of nearly 60 years. He was 87.

A native of Napa County, he lived in California all his life, except for 14 years in Athens, Ga.

He was the son of Desta Maude Stanton Klose, a native of Lake County, and Walter Wilhelm Klose, a native of Berlin, Germany, who immigrated to the United States and San Francisco in 1892.

He and his wife, Eloise Atwood Klose, moved to Woodland 14 years ago to be near their daughter, a Woodland school teacher.

His wife was diagnosed with cancer in July and died at the family home in Sept. 28, 1998, four days before her 83rd birthday. He died 42 days later.

The Kloses would have marked their 60th wedding anniversary on Nov. 16, 1998.

After attending public schools in Napa, he studied chemistry at UC Berkeley where he obtained both bachelor's and master's degrees.

As a research scientist for the university's agriculture department, he was credited with helping to develop two substances later used as blood clotting agents for surgical procedures.

One was a synthetic form of Vitamin K and the other was an inexpensive and simple chemical compound named 2-methylnaphthoquinone, which was four times more effective than Vitamin K as a blood clotter.

In 1941, Klose took a research position in the poultry division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Albany on the San Francisco Bay.

He remained at the Albany lab until 1970, when he moved with the poultry division to the new Richard Russell Agricultural Research Center in Athens, Ga.

While in Athens, Klose was elected a Fellow of the Poultry Science Association for his contributions to poultry processing science.

He retired at age 70. The Kloses remained in Athens several more years before moving to Woodland for retirement in 1984.

He was formerly active with the Toastmasters Club, the American Field Service student exchange program and the Albany High School Band Boosters.

Klose was active in supporting Boy and Girl Scout activities in the East Bay, and was a member of Unitarian churches in Berkeley, El Cerrito, Athens and Davis. He was active in the Davis chapter of the National Association of Retired Persons, was a member of the Senior Citizens Center in Woodland and was a lifelong Democrat.

He played tennis and bridge, swam and walked for recreation, family members said.

He is survived by a daughter and two sons, Stephanie Klose of Woodland, Don Klose of Berkeley and Bob Klose of Sebastopol; a son-in-law and daughter-in-law, Jerry Friis of Woodland and Susan Swartz of Sebastopol; four grandchildren, Even K. Friis of Woodland, Jenni E. Klose of San Francisco, and Gretta K. Klose and Samantha Swartz, both of Sebastopol.

Other survivors are his sister-in-law, Rachel Klose of Arcata, and her three children, Stanton Klose of San Rafael, Judy Klose Flores of Hawaii and Kathleen Klose of Newburyport, Mass.; and his sister and brother-in-law, Margaret Atwood Miller and Gordon Miller of Point Richmond, and their two sons, Steven and Fred Miller. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

No funeral is planned. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

McNary's Chapel in Woodland is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial contributions to the Heart Association, American Cancer Society or to a favorite charity.

Alma M. Kanoff
Alma Marie Kanoff died on Nov. 7, 1998, in her home. She was 97.

She was born on July 7, 1901, in Muscatine, Iowa.

In 1942, she and her husband, George Kanoff, moved from Muscatine to Sacramento, where she worked for the Weinstock-Lubin Company until her retirement in 1966.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Kanoff, in 1959.

She leaves behind her daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Les McNeil of Davis, and her son and his wife, Bruce and Marjorie Kanoff of Zephyr Cove, Nev.

She is also survived by five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A family memorial will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the American Cancer Society, or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Richard A. May
Richard A. May died on Nov. 3, 1998, in Woodland. Born Oct. 10, 1916, in Blackfoot, Idaho, he was 82.

He is a graduate of Dixon High School in Brethren, Mich., and Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich.

May was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and an elder at the Davis Community Church. He was also chief landscape architect with the state Department of Parks and Recreation's Development Division.

He was a member of the Rotary Club of Davis, American Society of Landscape Architects and El Macero Country Club. He loved gardening, family members said.

May was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas G. May.

He is survived by his wife, Carol May of El Macero; his son, Jeffrey L. May of Elk Grove and his wife, Cynthia; his sister, Betty A. Louck of Seattle; his step-sister, Laurine Ingebright of Seattle; his two grandchildren, Jennifer L. May and Michael Elfers, both of Elk Grove; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to attend his memorial service at 3 p.m. Friday at Davis Community Church, 412 C St. Donations may be made in his name to Yolo Hospice by mail to P.O. Box 1014, Davis, Calif. 95617, or by phone at (800) 491-7711.

Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.

Lee A. Butler
Lee A. Butler of Gold River died on Nov. 9, 1998. He was 67.

He was a native of Ohio and a former Davis resident. He was the president of Butler Environment for 40 years.

He was the husband of Catherine Butler; father of Patrick, Daniel, Linda and Michael Butler, Susan Holden and Mary Buckley; grandfather of Norman, Nick, Brandon, Chris, Blake, Ryan, Kyle, Katie and Robyn; and the brother of Robert, Donald and Jerome Butler, Virginia Gibbs and Margie McAvoy.

Friends are welcome to visit between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12, at Price Funeral Chapel, 6335 Sunrise Blvd. in Citrus Heights. The chapel can be reached at (916) 725-2109.

Friends are also invited to attend the rosary at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, at St. Mel's Catholic Church, 4745 Pennsylvania Ave. in Fair Oaks.

Interment will be in Davis Cemetery.

Catherine `Tuddy' Gillis
Catherine Tuddy Gillis died on Nov. 11, 1998, at her Davis home after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was 71.

She was born on April 21, 1927, in Roslindale, Mass.

She came to Davis in 1967 with her former husband, Alexander J. Gillis. He was in the U.S. Army so the family traveled extensively.

Because of her fondness for Davis, she returned in 1974 to make Davis her home and raise her family. She was very dedicated to her family and they always came first.

She loved animals and her family says she was always taking in a stray cat or dog to give it a good home.

She was a member of St. James Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her son, Christopher James Gillis, in March 1995.

She is survived by four children, Stephen Gillis of Davis, Jay Gillis of Dixon and his wife Mary, Robin Flores of Littleton, Colo., and her husband Mike, and Heather Peterson of Grass Valley and her husband Tim; seven grandchildren, Ashley and Nolan Flores of Littleton, Colo., Amanda and Hannah Gillis of Dixon, Joseph Peterson of Grass Valley, Aaron Peterson of San Francisco and Josh Peterson of San Luis Obispo; her sister, Margaret Gorman of Roslindale, Mass., and her husband Jack and their family; and her former husband, Alexander J. Gillis of Denver, Colo.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass at 10 a.m. Monday at St. James Catholic Church, 200 W. 14th St. in Davis. Burial will be private at the Davis Cemetery.

Her family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Foster of Davis and Jody, Lisa, Diane and Helen from Yolo Hospice for their ongoing care throughout her illness.

Remembrances may be made in her name to the Sacramento SPCA, 6201 Florin Perkins Road in Sacramento.

Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.

Fred E. Geiser
Fred E. Geiser died Nov. 12, 1998, at Courtyard Health Care in Davis. Born May 22, 1924, in Seattle, he was 74.

He served his country in World War II in the U.S. Army.

A 47-year resident of Yolo County and member of the Winters Rotary Club, he loved boating and fishing, family members said.

For 30 years, Geiser worked for Mill Mutuals as a field representative.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Harriett Geiser, in 1993 and his two brothers, Richard and Gilbert Geiser.

He is survived by his dear friend, Betty Mansfield of Davis; his son, Frederick Geiser Jr. of Fair Oaks; his two daughters, Charlotte Olmos of Sacramento and her husband Antonio, and Catherine Cahill of Moonachi, N.J., and her husband George; his six grandchildren, Heather Geiser and Catherine Olmos of Sacramento, Christian Olmos of San Diego, and Kevin, Amy and Allison Cahill of Moonachie, N.J.; his two great-grandsons, Austin and Tristan Geiser of Sacramento.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Smith's Colonial Chapel, 14 Main St. in Winters. Private inurnment will take place at Winters Cemetery.

Concepcion Contreras
Concepcion Contreras died in her Davis home on Oct. 29, 1998. She was 85.

Born in Sonora, Mexico, on Dec. 8, 1912, she came to Davis in 1960. She worked for over 18 years at the Hunt's Cannery in Davis, and was a member of St. James Catholic Church.

She is survived by her children, Maria Amparo Santos of Davis, Connie Zaragosa and husband Eulalio of Woodland, Josephine Fulmer of Woodland, Carmen Allen and husband Steve of Citrus Heights, and Humberto Contreras and wife Susan of Sacramento; 24 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. She also is survived by two sisters, Dolores Duarte of Sonora, Mexico, and Herminia Arceo of Mexicala.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francisco Contreras, and a daughter, Frances Hampton.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the mortuary chapel. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the Davis Cemetery.

Norman C. Metz
A memorial service was held Wednesday for Norman C. Metz, senior vice president at DeVry Inc., who died Oct. 25, 1998, in Illinois after a long illness. He was 50.

Metz joined DeVry Institutes in 1983 as vice president of marketing and sales for Bell & Howell's Education Group. He subsequently assumed the responsibilities of management of all DeVry Institutes in the U.S. and Canada. Following the 1987 purchase of DeVry Institutes by the Keller Graduate School of Management, Metz was instrumental in the transition from Bell & Howell Education Group to the new DeVry Inc.

He had earlier held positions with Coca-Cola Foods, Proctor & Gamble and Bell Telephone Laboratories.

Metz earned his bachelor of science degrees in electrical engineering and physics from UC Davis, and his master's degree in electrical engineering from Stanford.

Metz is survived by his wife, Bonnie S. Rucks; a daughter, Alexa; four brothers, Barney Metz of Aiea, Hawaii, Gary Beversdorf of Reno, Dean Metz of Midwest City, Okla. and Wayne Metz of North Carolina; and three sisters, Susan Lundquist of Woodland, Lynn Brillantes of Redwood City and Pamela McOuat of Hilo, Hawaii.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Norman C. Metz Memorial Fund, in care of North Northfield United Methodist Church, 797 Sanders Road, Northbrook, Ill. 60062.

R. Bryan Miller
Friends are invited to a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Miller family home, 908 Fordham Drive, for R. Bryan Miller, a professor of chemistry at UC Davis and chairman of the Academic Senate, who died on Oct. 29, 1998, in Los Angeles after a sudden illness.

Born in Tyler, Texas, on May 31, 1940, he was 58.

A funeral is planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 640 Hawthorn Lane. A reception at the family home will follow the service.

Trula M. Irons
A memorial service is set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Covell Gardens, 1111 Alvarado Ave., for Trula M. Irons, who died in Davis on Oct. 22, 1998. She was 86.

She was born in Ada, Okla., on Oct. 31, 1911.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, V. Hugo Irons, and a daughter, Madie Lenker.

Family members say her grandchildren and great grandchildren will miss their ``Mona,'' ``Twin,'' ``Momie'' very much.

She has been buried icon at Cypress Lawn Cemetery in Colma.

Paulette E. Hermann
Paulette E. Hermann died on Oct. 27, 1998, at Oxford Manor in Cameron Park. Born May 27, 1908, in Wiesbaden, Germany, she was 90.

In 1948, she moved to San Francisco from Germany with her husband. She was a seamstress for many years with I. Magnin and Co. in San Francisco.

The couple remained in San Francisco until 1981 when they moved to Davis, where she lived until she became ill two years ago and moved to Cameron Park to be near her family.

She is survived by her son, Gerald Herman of Shingle Springs; grandson, Laurence Herman of Davis; great-grandson, Alexander Herman of Davis; and sister, Maria Post of Wiesbaden, Germany.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St. Burial will be private at the Davis Cemetery.

Richard J. Courtney
Richard Joseph Courtney died on Oct. 29, 1998, at Woodland Memorial Hospital. He was 74. He was born on Oct. 27, 1924, in Schenectady, N.Y.

For 35 years, he worked for Los Angeles County and retired as the chief supervisor for the county records and archives office.

He had been a resident of Woodland for the last five years and had been a volunteer with the Woodland Library and a historian.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorthy Courtney, in 1992 and is survived by his present wife, Patricia Courtney of Woodland.

He is also survived by his son, John Courtney of Woodland and his wife, Susan; two sisters, Marge Watson of Phoenix, Ariz., and Nancy Walters of Buena Vista, Colo.; and three grandchildren, April Courtney, Amber Courtney and William Courtney, all of Woodland.

A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Rosary Church in Woodland. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery.
