Thomas Elmendorf
After a brief illness, Thomas Nelson Elmendorf, an emergency physician and past president of the California Medical Association, died June 30, 2000, at the UC Davis Medical Center, in Sacramento. Born on May 12, 1920, in Los Angeles, he was 80.
He loved everything about the practice of medicine and was still a full-time physician in the emergency room at Mercy San Juan Hospital in Sacramento when he became ill.
He earned a bachelor's degree at UC Berkeley, where he was president of his fraternity, Delta Upsilon. He received his medical degree from Stanford University, where in 1998 he was honored with the J.E. Wallace Sterling Lifetime Achievement Award.
After receiving his degree, he then served in the U.S. Navy and the Naval Reserve, where he retired with the rank of commander.
His love for medicine was the driving force in his life. While maintaining a general practice in Willows for 22 years, he served as president of the Butte/Glenn Counties Medical Society. He was an active member of the Sacramento and Yolo County Medical societies. He was also his district's representative to the California Medical Association Council and the Northern California delegate to the American Medical Association for many years. He was instrumental in forming a patient-friendly insurance program in the state and worked actively all of his life for better medicine for his patients and his colleagues.
As a partner with the Emergency Physicians Medical Group in Sacramento, he worked for 25 years with a group of men he loved and admired. He also served as the first part-time medical director for Electronic Data Systems when the company first came to California.
He and his wife Barbara traveled extensively, loved family get-togethers, their many friends and playing duplicate bridge.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Barbara Elmendorf of Davis; his former wife Virginia Elmendorf of Willows; four children, Meredith A. Trew, Thomas Michael Elmendorf and wife Karen of Willows, Christine Boyd Arbogast and James Kevin Elmendorf of Sacramento; 12 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by five step-children, Michael Howard Radford Junior and wife Dorothy of Sacramento, Susan Keagy and husband Bob of La Jolla, Allison Mirkin and husband Jeff of Los Angeles, Stephanie Merja and husband Chuck of Sun River, Mont. and Elsie Bryant and husband Loren of Milpitas; and nine step-grandchildren.
Those who knew and loved Tom are invited to a memorial celebration of his life, which will be held Friday, July 14, at 1 p.m. at the Stonegate Country Club, 919 Lake Blvd., Davis.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Yolo County Hospice, or an organization that rescues homeless animals.
ELSTON
Frank Bullard Elston, Jr.
Frank Bullard Elston Jr. died Thursday, July 1, 2004, at Alderson Convalescent Hospital in Woodland, at age 82.
Mr. Elston was born March 18, 1922, in Woodland, to parents Frank Bullard Elston Sr. and Alberta Elston.
Raised in Woodland, Mr. Elston graduated from Grant Union High School in Sacramento in 1940. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 as a medical technician and served in the Pacific. He returned to Woodland and worked for Speckles Sugar and later, for the Yolo County Sheriff's Department. He was instrumental in setting up the sheriff's substation in Broderick. He was elected chief of police in Woodland in 1951 and served for 12 years. Upon leaving that office, Mr. Elston became a golf pro and retired in 1982 at the Yolo Fliers Club.
He is survived by his wife Lenore Elston of Woodland; son, Frank A. Elston and his wife Belinda of Tracy; daughter, Rickie Elston Kline of Yuba City; grandchildren, Jordan and Jenna Lenore Elston of Tracy.
He was preceded in death by his parents Frank Bullard Elston Sr. and Alberta Elston.
Memorials may be sent to the Senior Citizens Center at 630 Lincoln Ave. and Meals on Wheels of Woodland.
A Rosary will be said at 7:30 pm. Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 301 Walnut St., Woodland.
Burial will be private.

ELTON
Robert Elton
Robert Elton, known as "Bob" to his many friends, died Sept. 14, 2001, from complications of myelodysplastic syndrome. Born on June 2, 1924, in Kansas City, Mo., to Gladys Shoemaker and Buford Elton, he was 77 years old.
Elton was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the Pacific Theater. He was an accomplished marksman and recipient of the Bronze Star.
He marriage his former wife, Fredonna Humphrey Elton, in August 1951; they had two children, Robin and Jeff. In October 1982 he marriage Elizabeth Landon Harvey and they enjoyed 19 years of marriage, 13 of which were on his beloved Lake of the Ozarks. They moved from Lakeview Heights, Mo., to Davis last spring to be closer to his daughter Robin and her family.
He loved nothing more than the joy of those around him having a great time. He was a fan of country western music and rousing political conversations. In his long career in sales, he had many customers that became lifelong friends.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; daughter, Robin Elton Robinson and her husband Curt of Davis; son, Jeffrey Elton of Des Moines, Iowa; stepson, Robert Langley of New Orleans, La.; sister, Lilyan May and her husband Stan and brother-in-law Norman May of Kansas City; nephews, Ken, Gary, Greg and Danny May; grandchildren Jessica, Andy, Robbie and William; and his many friends who were considered family.
Remembrances may be made in his name to the MDS International Foundation Inc., P.O. Box 613, Annapolis, MD 21404-0613. Due to the recent tragedy that befell the country, a celebration of his life is pending.

Ruby Spaulding Ely
Death Claims Mrs. Elmo Ely
The community was deeply grieved Monday when it was learned that Mrs. Ruby Ely had passed away that morning. It was generally known that for several days Death hovered near, but where life is young and vista of many happy years is unrolled before hope dies hard, and there was hope. There was hope that the virility of youth, combined with an unfaltering spirit might pull even the steepest grade, but it was not to be, so another spirit is added to the heavenly host.
Mrs. Ely had not been well since a girl, having an affliction of the heart. The portals of eternity were ajar for her two years ago, but hers was a brave and courageous conflict and she won, but with health still further impaired. Her last illness was of several weeks' duration and from the first those close to her feared the worst, but lived in hopes. Ruby was 24 years, 6 months and 8 days at her death.
Mrs. Ruby Spaulding Ely was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S.H. Hoy, highly esteemed pioneer residents of Winters. She was born in Winters, schooled in the Winters schools, was known and loved by all. She was marriage six years ago to Elmo Ely, a scion of the loved and revered Uncle Ben Ely, pioneer settler from Missouri. To them was born one son, Robert Elmo, nearing five years of age, who survives, with her parents, two sisters, Mrs. W.R. Chapman, Mrs. Rita Luft, two brothers, Will and Ben, all of Winters. Her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Stewart, octogenarians, also survive.
Funeral services were held from the home of Mrs. Chapman Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. There was one of the largest turnouts from the countryside of and funeral ever held here, and the floral tributes of loving friends were elegant and innumerable. Ross C. Wilson had charge of the arrangements. Rev. H. H. Wilson of the Christian church spoke words of comfort to the sorrowing and held out the hope of a reunion over there. Song service was rendered Mrs. E.W. Fisher at the piano and Mrs. R.E. Baker, Miss Lulu Wyatt, Mr. F.E. Wilson and Mr. E.W. Fisher. The casket bearers were Everett Sidwell, Henry Johnston, Ted Engelhart, Frank Englehart, Craig Niemann and Lloyd Green.

ELZALAKI
Anwar Kamel Elzalaki
Anwar Kamel Elzalaki of Boulder City, Nev. died Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005 at Boulder City Hospital at age 47.
Mr. Elzalaki was born Dec. 13, 1957 in Woodland. He had been a Yolo County resident most of his life. He was a 1975 graduate of Santa Cruz High School.
Survivors include Mr. Elzalaki's sisters, Gloria Bargiel and her husband Tom of Boulder City, Nev., Sue Hunt and her husband David of Dunnigan and Carmen Santee and her husband Rusty of Santa Cruz; his brothers, Ralph Henson and his wife Nancy of Nevada City, Monir Elzalaki of Carson City, Nev., Kamel Elzalaki and his wife Judy of San Pedro; his nieces, Desiree, Molly, Mariel and Monica; and his nephews, Kirra, Solomon, Christopher, Brian, Ryan, Jonathan and Andrew. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kamel and Janice Elzalaki.
Services: Respecting the wishes of Mr. Elzalaki, private graveside services are planned at East Lawn Memorial Cemetery. Boulder City Family Mortuary of Boulder City, Nev. assisted the family with arrangements.
EMISON
Eleanor May (Martin) Emison
Eleanor May (Martin) Emison died in Woodland Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at age 85, while residing in her grandparents restored Victorian.
Born July 25, 1917 in Woodland, Mrs. Emison was the daughter of Wilford and Rowena (Fisher) Martin. Wilford Martin was a dairyman and past president of the Yolo County Farm Bureau.
Mrs. Emison was educated in Woodland schools, beginning at Fillmore School and then Woodland High School. Graduating from Chico State with a teaching credential, Eleanor marriage her first husband, Lloyd Stockton, and then chose to be a homemaker and raise her four children. In the 1960s Eleanor worked at the Daily Democrat and particularly enjoyed contributing to the weekend edition regarding day trips such as "Wine Country Tours Popular for Yoloans."
Mrs. Emison was a second generation descendant of Yolo County pioneer, John Martin who arrived by wagon from Plum Hollow, Iowa in 1865 to claim his land from Major F. S. Freeman by clearing the land and building his home. Mrs. Emison followed after her grandfather's passion for daily journaling and has left detailed collective writings of the history of Woodland and Yolo County. Her passion for writing complimented her love of history, as she was actively involved in the Yolo County Historical Society, Woodland Historical Landmarks Advisory Committee and a major contributor to the original Walking Tour book of Historic Woodland.
"She loved to garden, sew, play bridge, and served as an Opera House docent, Gibson House docent, and historian/lifetime member of the Woodland Christian Church, " according to her family members. She was very active in Eastern Star and served with her husband as Worthy Matron & Worthy Patron.
Mrs. Emison is survived by her daughter Linda Henigan and husband Marshall of Woodland; daughter Jean Kristensen and husband Kris of Woodland; son Don Stockton and wife Jeanne of Sacramento; and her son Jim Stockton and wife Judy of Woodland. Four granddaughters, four grandsons, and one great-grandson also survive Eleanor.
Her husband, Harold Rice Emison, who was a photographer, travel partner and builder of replica family Victorian, and a brother, Donald Martin, preceded her in death.
A memorial service is scheduled at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the Christian Church, 509 College St. Rev. Larry Love and Pastor Walter Zeck will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her memory be sent to the Yolo County Historical Society, 103 Alpine Place, Woodland, 95695.
