Joseph Espigares, Jr. (1st of 2 obituaries)
Joe Espigares Jr. died peacefully at the Woodland Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness, surrounded by his family Monday, Jan. 31, 2005 at age 87.
Joe was born Dec. 26, 1917 in Yolo to the late Pilar (Funes) and Jose Espigares, who immigrated to the United States from Granada, Spain. He attended Cacheville Elementary School and graduated from Woodland High School in 1937. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II. He was a bookkeeper for Motroni Heard Lumber Co. for more than 20 years and at 45 years of age he began working at Equitable Life Insurance, fully retiring in 2003.
Joe was a life member of the Elks, Lions, Knights of Columbus and Eagles clubs. He was involved in the Iberico de Espana, Couples Club, school PTA, the Housing Authority, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, foreman of the grand jury, board of directors of Heart Federal Bank, County Supervisor for two terms and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1997. Joe served on the Woodland Parks and Recreation and was a booster of all youth sports throughout his life. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
Joe started the Yolo Athletic Club and was the Club's only manager in basketball and baseball prior to World War II. Joe played with the Woodland Acorns and Oaks before turning to softball. Joe played with Spreckles Sugar, American Legion and Knights of Columbus.
Joe was involved in the American Legion Yolo Post 77 baseball program since 1948. He was the committee chairman until the 1980s and remained active on the committee. Joe served two terms on the State Legion Baseball Commission.
Joe was very vociferous and severe with the umpires. The umpires for Yolo Post 77's games were from Sacramento as were the teams they played. Joe's favorite place was behind home plate closest to the umpires. Joe's favorite partner was the late Don Urain.
One experience was when Joe lined up a 9-inning practice game for Yolo Post 77. He asked Bob Carston, who at the time was his son-in-law, if he would donate his time to umpire behind the plate. Bob said OK. By the start of the third inning, Joe heckled and was so vociferous at Bob, that Bob called a time out. Bob walked to the backstop and told Joe if he heard one more word out of him, he would walk off the field and Joe could finish the game behind the plate. That was the first time in Yolo Post 77 history, that the fans at Clark Field never heard another word from Joe Espigares for seven complete innings.
In later years, Joe's favorite pastime was playing pinochle at the American Legion every afternoon. Joe had a great passion for baseball, attending Giants' spring training games, was a faithful 49'er fan and enjoyed his vacations in Santa Cruz was a valued walking partner to his dear friend Fred McGrew.
He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Joe was always willing to do any task at hand for family and friends alike. Joe enjoyed life to its fullest. Above all, Joe was a true American and very proud of his country.
Joe is survived by his wife of 23 years, Lois Espigares of Woodland; his daughters, Nancy Damman and her husband Larry of Vacaville, Linda Jo Flippo and her husband Tom; his stepdaughter, Liz Nakagaki and her husband Jerry all of Woodland; his grandchildren, Kenneth Joseph Carston and his wife Kim and DeLaney Martin; his step grandchildren, Ellen, Alex and Erin Hildebrand; his great-grandson, Koen Joseph Carston and his sisters, Pearl Nunez, Sally Botts and Carrie Alberigi all of Woodland.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nieves Espigares; his parents, Pilar and Jose Espigares and his brothers and sisters, Placida Garcia, John Espigares, Ralph Espigares, Josephine Fernandez, Connie Barrios and Dolores Garrido.
The family requests memorials in Joe's name be directed to the Tyson Miller Scholarship Fund, American Legion Yolo Post 77 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
