Hal F. Halsted
Hal F. Halsted died in Woodland Monday, July 28, 2003, at age 86.
Born April 26, 1917, in Omaha, Neb., Mr. Halsted was an aeronautical engineer for many years in Seattle and Southern California before relocating to Woodland in 1972. He hand carved furniture which had been a hobby since his early teens, and which he worked full time after retirement.
Survivors include his son, Barry Halsted; daughter, Barbara Halsted; and granddaughters, Andrea and Gina Kern. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Margaret Halsted.
The family requests memorials be directed to the American Lung Association.
Arrangements are under the direction of North Sacramento Funeral Home.
HAM
Charlotte R. Ham
Charlotte Russell Ham of San Francisco and Davis died peacefully on June 2, 2002, in the home of her birth in Davis. She was 89.
Her spirit for life was fueled by her family, friends, community and especially by the family ranch on Russell Boulevard, which was named after her father, William Ogburn Russell.
She went to the Fairfield School in Davis and Winters High School. She attended UC Berkeley and UCLA, and was a Kappa Kappa Gamma. She was also a Goldwyn Girl and appeared in several Eddie Cantor movies.
She shared her interests and energy in the Junior League, the San Francisco Symphony, the San Francisco Opera, Ronald Reagan's gubernatorial and presidential campaigns, horseback riding and tennis. She and her husband loved entertaining and were a marvelous hostess and host in the city and in the country.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Richard Collins Ham, and her brother, William Ogburn Russell Jr., M.D.
She is survived by her daughter Pauline (Paula) and husband Lowell (Whitey) Johnson of West Granby, Conn.; grandson Keith and his wife Maria and their son Victor Johnson of Hallendale, Fla.; grandson Eric and his wife Julie and their children Kelli and Derek Johnson of Belmont; and grandson Russell and his wife Ulli Johnson of Phoenix.
She is further survived by her sister-in-law Marolyn Russell and brothers-in-law Robert and Donald Ham and the Pesola family: Anthony, Maryanne, Loretta, Marie, Loretta, Jacquilina, Michael and Nicolangelo, who lovingly cared for her and the ranch for 12 years.
A memorial service is being planned for late August at the ranch in Davis. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to the San Francisco Opera, 301 Van Ness Ave., San Francisco, CA 94102, or to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, CA 95617.
HAMAKAWA
Edward Shigeo Hamakawa
Edward Shigeo Hamakawa passed away at his Sacramento home on July 24, 2004. At 79, he joined his beloved and sorely missed wife of 48-years, Bessie, who passed away five years ago.
He was born to Mojiro and Yae Hamakawa, on Oct. 19, 1924, in Winters.
After graduating from Winters High School in 1942, Mr. Hamakawa was a decorated US Army, MIS translator-interpreter serving in Manila, Japan and Korea with the 306th HQ Intel & 24th Corps. A 43-year career with the Dept. of Army in Sacramento as inspector, followed. Earlier he was assigned to the Amache, Colorado Interment camp. Mr. Hamakawa was active with the VFW Nisei Post 8985, Boys Scouts Troop 250, Bocho Doshi Kai and many others. He valued family and friends and enjoyed road trips, abalone diving, golf, gambling, fishing and partying.
He is survived by his brother Bill and his wife, Mayumi; sister Terry Sumida and her husband, Bob; sons Charles and David and his wife, Sherma; daughters Evelyn Yamamoto and her husband, Alan, Tammy Hamakawa-Iseri and her husband, Andy; grandchildren Lee, Jaime and Corryn Hamakawa, Tom, Emily and Michael Yamamoto, and pup Poko. His caregiver Rachael Vete and family made Mr. Hamakawa's final year much better. He is survived by many friends but joins many others.
Family and friends were invited to gather at VFW Nisei Hall on Aug. 7, to celebrate his fulfilling life. Services were private at his request.
HAMEL
Elsie S. Hamel
Elsie S. Hamel, a lifelong resident of Solano County, died on Nov. 30, 2002, after a five-year stay at Sierra Health Convalescent Hospital in Davis. She was six days short of being 95 years old.
She was born on Dec. 6, 1907, to Annette Runge and Herman Stick in the their home on Tremont Road. She lived on the south side of Putah Creek for 89 years. She was a homemaker and involved in ranching all her life.
She first rode a pony, Sid, and then a horse, Gyp, to a one-room elementary school at the intersection of Eggert and Tremont Road. She graduated from Dixon High School and Heald Business College. She was a member of the Tremont Mite Society and Farm Bureau for many years. Family genealogy and local history were her hobbies.
Her husband, Fred C. Hamel, died in 1990. Their son, Alan Hamel, died in 1960.
She is survived by two sons, Owen Hamel of Davis, and Ray Hamel and his wife Ruthmarie of Oregon; three grandchildren, Carrie Hamel of Dixon, David Hamel and his wife Cindy of Oregon, and Howard Hamel and his wife Lorrie of Oregon; seven great-grandchildren; two nieces; two nephews; and her cousin, Jean McGoneghy of New Mexico.
The family wishes to thank the dedicated nurses and staff at Sierra Health Care. At her request, there will be no funeral service.

HAMEL
Mabel Hamel
Mabel Hamel a resident of Fort Bragg died in Sherwood Oaks Health Center, Fort Bragg on Sunday, June 16, 2002, at age 78.
Born Jan. 12, 1924, in Woodland, Mrs. Hamel had been a Yolo County resident for many years. She attended local schools. She marriage her husband in 1943. She was a member of the Eastern Star and was Past Guardian of Job's Daughters, Bethel 260, Yolo County. Her and husband made their home in Fort Bragg since 1973.
Mrs. Hamel is survived by her husband, Gene Hamel of Fort Bragg; daughters, Genie Pope of Boise, Idaho and Georgia Hamel of Santa Cruz; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was conducted Tuesday, June 18, at Rose Memorial Park, Fort Bragg.
Chapel by the Sea of Fort Bragg assisted the family with arrangements.

John Douglas Hamilton
John Douglas Hamilton, 42, a long-term resident of Winters, died suddenly of heart failure in Phoenix, Arizona, on Sept. 8, 2000. John was born in Berkeley on October 8, 1957.
John grew up in northern California on a ranch west of Winters and on a ranch along the Mattole River at Honeydew, Humboldt County owned by his grandparents, Ben and Eva Etter.
During his youth John traveled widely. When John was 15 he routinely drove a supply vehicle alone across the Namib Desert to resupply a remote research camp where his parents and several graduate students were conducting research on wildlife. He discovered a long over-looked beetle species named cardiosis hamiltonulus, a species that proved to be the key to unraveling the meaning of the extraordinary species diversity of other Namid Desert species. His find was so spectacularly different from all other known forms that it was named after him the day he discovered it in 1967 by the famed Austrian entomologist, Charles Koch.
In recent years he was a successful businessman in the Phoenix area, owning several small businesses involving mobile mechanic auto repair, light construction and self-help construction. An inveterate inventor and automobile mechanic, John as working on a mechanism to desalinize seawater at the time of his death. In the Davis, area he once owned and operated a spiritual healing center. He maintained a long-term interest in helping the less fortunate to improve themselves and had what he felt was a revolutionary reading course under development.
His parents, Bill and Marion Hamilton of Winters, his sister Susan Hamilton, also of Winters, nieces Lily Starling of Olympia, Washington, Emma Pfanner of Winters and nephew William Pfanner, also of Winters, survive John.

Leigh Hamilton & Phyllis Hamilton
Davis native Leigh Hamilton and his wife Phyllis Hamilton died following a vehicle accident near Jenner last week. He was 89, and she was 83.
A memorial service for the couple will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Davis Community Church, 412 C St. Burial will be private.
A lifelong Davis resident, Leigh Hamilton was born Jan. 23, 1916, to Frank John Hamilton, who was Davis' police chief from 1946 to 1960, and Mabel Magdalina (Montgomery) Hamilton, whose first cousin was Marguerite Montgomery and who is related to other Montgomery family history in Davis.
Leigh Hamilton died March 6, 2005. He was raised in Davis and graduated from Davis High School. He was a signalman for Southern Pacific Railroad for 35 years and was a member of F&AM Athens-Silveyville Lodge in Davis. He also was a member of the Fraternal Order of Masons.
Since his retirement, he enjoyed watching sports and, until a few years ago, playing golf and bowling. He visited daily with friends at a doughnut shop. The couple enjoyed traveling, and took country roads to visit family and friends.
According to family, Leigh Hamilton loved children and could win the hearts of even young or shy children, having them laughing in no time. Always friendly, he was known to strike up conversations with people he had just met.
Said to be the oldest living resident to be born in Davis, he took pride in his history in the community and enjoyed learning about Davis.
Phyllis Hamilton was born July 13, 1921, in Peru, Ind., to Claud and Dorothy Stinson. She attended Oakland schools, including Technical High School and Merritt Business College. During her school years, she was active in church functions, chorus and the a cappella choir, and loved playing the piano. According to relatives, her family always knew her mood by the type of music she was playing.
She was a member of the Rainbow for Girls in Oakland, where she held several offices, such as worthy adviser and the state office of choir director.
A 40-year resident of Davis, she was a member of Davis Community Church and the church's Women's Circle. After moving to Davis in 1965, she worked for the Davis School District as the secretary to school counselor Hanna Bauer, then, until she retired, as school secretary at Pioneer School.
The couple marriage Nov. 6, 1971.
The couple is survived by Phyllis Hamilton's daughter, Susan Sherer Friel and her husband John of Arbuckle; her son, Edward F. Sherer III and his wife Diane of Camino; a sister, Mary Ann May of Shady Cove, Ore.; her nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
The couple also is survived by Leigh Hamilton's daughter, Janet Hamilton Goin and her husband Robert G. Rogers of Richmond, Va.; three grandchildren, Deborah Leigh Goin of Naples, Fla., Dewitt T. Goin of Prospect, Va., and Lisa Goin Wilson of Cleveland, N.C.; four great-grandchildren; a niece, Leigh Ann Machado of Pleasanton; and two great-nieces.
Leigh Hamilton was preceded in death by his first wife, Marceille Hislop Hamilton, in 1956.
Phyllis Hamilton was preceded in death by a daughter, Sylvia Lee Divelbiss; a sister, Margaret Schmies; a brother, Jesse Stinson; and a nephew, Russell Lentz. She also was preceded in death by her first husband, Edward F. Sherer Jr., in 1961.
